Stjarnan have form in Scotland and Poland

661

Celtic face Icelandic champions Stjarnan in their opening Champions League qualifier, with the first leg just three weeks away.  Stjarnan knocked Motherwell out of the Europa League last season, by all accounts the Scottish club should have given a much better account of themselves.

It will be vastly more concerning to Ronny Deila that they went on to eliminate Lech Poznan in the next round.  Lech finished second in Poland, just two points behind our old pals Legia Warsaw, and the Polish season starts two weeks before Scotland’s, so there is nothing to be complacent about.

A three goal home defeat at the hands of Inter Milan ended Stjarnan’s European adventure, but by that stage the Icelandic fans must had expired their European budget for the season, the trip to the San Siro would have been a suitable place to bow out.

The other consequential information when we draw teams from near the Arctic Circle is that they are midseason and (from what I can make out) play on an artificial surface.

I’ve no idea what happened to Motherwell and Lech Poznan but there are no excuses for either team and there will be none for Celtic.  Let’s get the job done.

I see it, sevco are signing players not good enough for Celtic :-) HH

  5. Why aren’t we signing any experienced 35 year olds? PL is just not supporting our manager. Disappointing.

I watched both legs v Inter .My nearest neighbour is a big Inter man.He watches their games on my tele. Home game in Iceland – they gave Inter a game – parked the bus and made Inter work for it. Big , strong , fit , tactically disciplined but lacking skill / technique..Inter ripped them apart in Milan..They couldnt cope with Kovacic.

  14. Wilson is a good signing for them. A big improvement on Elbows and Mohsni. Bad move for the player, shows a lack of ambition.

  15. Well. a new manager, a new chairman, a new board…at sevco…

but the same old mentality and habits…it’s the sevco way..

I’ll trade a well organised functional club – with a plan – and playing in the top division….for

..well a club who have no plan, are serial dysfunctionalists and for whom money is no object ..mainly because they don’t have any.

    Absolutely.

They are going straight back down the epic fail route with cast off pro’s that got them

to a humping ‘well’ short of the journey.

I do hope they keep it up over the summer, they’re spending the season ticket money before they know how much and who’s getting it.

  23. Wilson never good enough for us, but probably an improvement for the Huns.

No matter how badly he plays, however, be prepared for him to be touted for a Scotland cap from the MSM.

  25. Reading some of the guff on zombiemedia, they’ll canter the league, finally win the Petrofac cup, proberley win one of the cups ( hopefully the Scottish) and be going into Europe as wee rightfully take our place back in the premiership. It’s like reading zombiemedia June 2014, can’t think how that worked out :-) HH
