Strikers and the comfort zone

538

There’s something healthy when the arrival of a new striker, who has yet to trouble the net, has raised the game of an incumbent.  If you talk to footballers they’ll tell you they need to be challenged.  Even most greats hit a comfort zone, where they know they are cherished by manager and fans alike, so that knot in the stomach about where the next contract is coming from never materialises.

Gary Hooper missed this at Celtic.  He was the apple of Neil Lennon’s eye, and clearly top striker at Celtic, but a few seasons in his appetite for the same old challenge seemed to wane.  I’m assured by those who shared a dressing room with Henrik Larsson, this was one area which set the Swede aside.  The accolades meant nothing to him, he wanted every trophy, every record, which perhaps indicates why he captured the Champions League in his mid-30s.

Exactly, if Ross McCormack can go for 11m then we have to re-evaluate our position. Sometimes I think EPL sides are more willing to pay the higher fee when they know wage demands are going to be astromonical, which is not the case with guys coming from Scotland

    HH

    —————–

Villa captain Delph went for £8mill and Man Us Evans is apparently going for £10mill, sure the fees are stupid in England but not all are stupid.

    ===

    Sorry for delay:)

However, if you think 10m for Johnny Evans is not stupid then it shows even some of our own support are taken in by the madness down there. If he is worth 10m then it backs up all the suggestions that we should hold out for 15m for VVD.

  3. I see Barcelona members have voted 55-45 to keep Josep Maria Bartomeu as president. That means 45% voted to sack him even although they won the European Cup and the domestic double. Joan Laporte, the losing candidate and former president, had said he would sign Pogba from Juventus if elected. Such populist promises could see many clubs going bankrupt pretty quickly.

Imagine if we had such an election every 6 years. The MSM would have an absolute field day exploiting any divisions within our support. The board would never allow such democracy at Celtic Park. We would have most of them out in a jiffy had we such a voice.

Dallas Dallas if only the people who are abusing you on this site knew a tenth of what you know and remember about Celtic. Then again, given that the TimMalloys would not be their football team of choice, that is not surprising. You keep on keeping on safe in the knowledge that there is nothing of interest on their own sites and pricks opinions don’t count anyway.

Anyone watching the game in Sean Ogs on Wednesday?

I am meeting former CQN legend, Noel90, in Sean Og’s for the game.

I will be the mature(?) gentleman(??) in the grey jacket with the original CQN badge on the lapel.

Noel will be the less mature one, drinking Budweiser.

Jamesgang – Sorry I missed your post yesterday that you were in Beal Feirste. Got home with a terrible hangover and fell asleep, didn’t wake up till about 5 o’clock. TCR was in the town centre too beering in the Europa and Cosgroves. Get you a beer next time you are here for definite.

Petec – reason there was newspapers, the Sporting Life, Racing Post etc. on the pool table was because the locals were punting on the horses. Explained that to ye at the time. Scotland and Ireland are very similar in some ways, however Ireland is not Scotland. Horse racing takes precedence over everything else in the pubs here.Golf, pool, football are all secondary.

TCR – Glad you got back home to Doire safe and sound, a Celtic genuis you are Sir.

Is Charlie Nicholas the new Charles Green?

Lets all have a laugh at Charlie & the ChitTalk Factory (Sky Sports):

Mike Ashley’s Rangers takeover has perturbed plenty of Gers fans, but Celtic legend Charlie Nicholas doesn’t believe the discount sports goods vendor will have to invest much of his billions in order to help the stricken giants bridge the gap to his old club.

The Bhoys have been anything but impressive in the Scottish Premiership this season and were technically eliminated from the Champions League play-off round twice.

For many, the absence of Rangers is responsible for the Hoops’ decline and now, after falling all the way to the foot of the Scottish Football League ladder, the Light Blues could be but a season away from overhauling Ronny Deila’s men as the soccer super power north of the border.

Or at least that’s the view of TV pundit Nicholas, who says:

“It wouldn’t take a lot of investment to make Rangers able to compete with Celtic. I don’t know if you can talk in terms of finances, but if you look at their squad I’d say they are potentially only four players away.”

The ex-Arsenal forward has cited the Parkhead club’s penchant for shedding their top talents at the first sign of profit as the reason behind this belief.

After receiving bucketloads of cash for superstars such as Fraser Forster, Victor Wanyama and Gary Hooper in recent campaigns, Celtic have reinvested a fraction of the funds in replacements.

Instead they pursue a transfer policy of unearthing diamonds for pennies, hoping to auction them off for millions further down the line.

It’s a stellar business model to follow, providing, of course, top talent can continually be found in the bargain bins.

The Bhoys’ plight this term, however, is proof that it can’t.

Nicholas suggests that, should substantial offers come in for any of their top performers this term, they’ll certainly be accepted, while the potential loss of loan stars such as Jason Denayer will also be devastating.

New Rangers head honcho Ashley has proved that, despite widespread criticism and a tendency to turn to football clubs into enormous advertising hoardings, he will spend money when it’s needed.

Just this summer he forked out around £30m improving the Newcastle squad in accordance with Alan Pardew’s wishes, a fraction of this would elevate Rangers to a level where they’d be capable of toppling Celtic next term, should they get promoted.

Currently sitting in second in the Scottish Championship, the Gers can be backed at 7/1 to claim a 55th top tier crown in 2015/16.

Hail Hail…..or ad Elizabeth would say “Heil Heil!”

I agree about the trolls, however,in my opinion, we have to keep posting or they will have won.

It was interesting that Dallas asked rudicantfail if he was Ryecatcher and more telling that Dallas didn’t receive a response.

I had the same conversation with a fellow CQN r earlier that day about rudicantfail but I’m never on the blog that late to challenge him.

Ciftci hearing at SFA this morning. If found guilty, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him miss all our 6 league matches in August.

He would then be back after the International break for the games against Aberdeen, Dundee and Hearts. He would also be available for our Champions League qualifiers.

Hard to second guess what the SFA will do though as he was a Dundee Utd player at the time but ours now,

  22. Dallas.

Ryecatcher was impressively knowledgeable about The Clash so is rudicantfail. Ryecatcher would be nice to some bloggers and troll others, so does rudicantfail. Both mention travelling up to games and as you say have similar styles. Both tend to blog late at night. Only circumstantial evidence of course, but if not the same blogger then they are similar.
