Strong message from Supporters Association

926

Running late today…….

The Celtic Supporters Association are in their seventh decade so have seen it all before, albeit the matters the felt necessary to comment on today are uncommon in modern times.  After their AGM yesterday they issued the following statement:

“We do not condone in any circumstances the letting off of smoke devices of any kind, the dangers to the health of our supporters should at all times be paramount in everybody’s thoughts. We have quite a number of members who are of the senior variety, and the dangers to anyone with respiratory problems are greatly increased by coming into contact with smoke.

We also do not condone the use of pyrotechnics of any kind; again the dangers to our own supporter’s health should be paramount at all times.

Finally, the deliberate damaging of property within any stadium is not acceptable, and leaves a stain on the great reputation of the Celtic Support. The seats that were broken at Fir Park was blatant vandalism; nothing else.”

I share Association president Joe O’Rourke’s hope that this is a watershed moment for the support, but most of us know at least one person who thrives on chaos and notoriety.   We need as many strong voices to step forward as possible, someone with experience of putting genies back in bottles would be handy too.

Many thanks to those who participated in our Cinc Senti’s auction, which closed yesterday, raising £102 for charity.  More on where the money will be going later in the week……..

“Yes those were the days, when you didn’t reach for your laptop, phone or tablet or whatever to see what you had missed in terms of things Celtic. Those days when, unless you were from east Kilbride, you had no idea what the eather was like there— and to be honest, you had absolutely no interest in finding out!….. Back to the days when you had never heard of Kojo and his way of speaking or writing, when no one had ever Brattbakkedinanager, would recognise a cash strapped scrofulous hillbilly outside Beverley Hills, and the only Battered Bunnet you knew of belonged to your Grandad.”

Lennybhoy – happy birthday to your bhoy! I share your pain my 13yr old isn’t into football either! Still buy him a season ticket every year in the hope he will see the light :-) Thankfully my 18yr old loves the football he is currently en route to Barca although his flight to Stanstead this morning has been diverted to Birmingham! Fingers crossed he makes his flight later today!

Not sure you’ll even see this and it doesn’t really matter but in brief response I have no issue with most of what you say, in principle. However your separation of the issue is not how Celtic have handled this. They have four-squarely used Friday at Motherwell as the reason to ban the 128. The simplification of the complex issue came from the Club, not me.

All of the points that I have seen raised against the Green Brigade can be debated. Not meeting the Club is poppycock (pun accidental but I’m leaving it). Secret to a degree, there’s a fair amount of protection required. There is a forum, you can join the forum, you can interact and ultimately there is a route to being an active member. There’s a weight of evidence now that suggests as a group they are not popular with the majority of other fans and so their days are up. The banner against AC Milan was a turning point. Not because of what it said but because there was no appetite for any form of a distraction on that particular occasion.

Peter Lawwell made it a stated aim a long time ago to disband the GB, he had no grounds to do so and faced the wrath of the Trust, CSA and others in trying to do so. The GB were successfully knocked off course by the Bill and the Act and as far as I can see a balance shifted significantly away from moderate members, Celtic banners and songs.

It is indeed complex, but the outcome was not how it could have been.

Having said ” move on”, I have to say I believe the FAC statement is excellent!

  4. Lionroars67, good statement from FAC.

A real headache for Celtic to deal with but unfair treatment of innocent fans.

And they are innocent until proven otherwise.

I really believe in free speech, but UEFA don’t want political banners, and the club find themselves in trouble when the GB put up such banners, so what to do.

There was vandalism the other night, in the area where the GB were, but was it caused by their members or by people attracted to the group, wannabes?

There has been seat damage in section 111.

This all adds up to a problem for both Celtic and the GB.

The question is what’s to be done?

A fair and transparent investigation, by the club?

Or just break up 111 and no going back?

Vandals should be banned, prosecuted, but individually.

To blame a whole group, especially when a lack of stewarding may have contributed to events isn’t fair.

The GB need to grow up a bit, they can’t have everything their own way, cooperation is needed.

I hope it isn’t too late for compromise.

    Anyway, Hi Ho.

  5. FAC “have no objection to those responsible, if identified and after a fair and transparent investigation, being suitably disciplined”.

There would be no need for that if the people responsible were to own up, apologise, pay for the damage and face the music from Celtic. Or if not all of them, some of them.

Touched down in barca for the ”meaningless game”.. Time for a few San Miguel’s! The green brigade debate still goes on and on!.. Were Celtic supporters bhoys we were all hear b4 green brigade. Those of u old enough to be at Lisbon and for us who were at Seville. There was no green brigade then.. Celtic is number 1 priority.. Let’s just hope when all this investigation is finished the innocent ones in the GB from fri nite have their bans lifted. HH

    Lionroars67, good statement from FAC.

Agree with both of you good statement by FAC

From the statement i think it is safe to assume the GB communicate with all the other supporter groups within the FAC umbrella, they also have communicated with Celtic FC over various issues, not quite understanding those on this site who state no one knows who the GB are

I really believe in free speech, but UEFA don’t want political banners, and the club find themselves in trouble when the GB put up such banners, so what to do.

Tomorrow night Celtic will play a huge club whose whole being is about political expression, EUFA would not dare tackle Barca for political banners, songs and chants.

I probably agree with you on many points about the MSM anti-Celtic agenda and the ongoing attempts to re-write non-taxpayers’ history.

And/but that still leaves me with 4 questions:

Did Friday’s behaviour help promote the case for selling alcohol in grounds as per German football?

Did the destruction (intentional or accidental) of seats at an opponents ground help to promote the case for standing areas to the Board or wider law-making and law-enforcement authorities?

Has this episode potentially damaged Celtic’s great name across the world and potentially turned fellow citizens who may be ‘agnostic’ in terms of football/culture/ religion against us?

Has this completely played into the hands of those people in the MSM and beyond who want to perpetuate the old firm myth, blacken our name and divert attention away from past misdeeds and ongoing shenanigans on the other side of town?

    For me it’s

    No

    No

    Yes

    Yes

The whoexactlydunnit, for why, for whom are all secondary to me. These are the core questions. If you read back you’ll see that from Saturday morning when I first posted on this not once have I mentioned the GB or implied guilt or responsibility towards them.

But I would say that it seems clear that wilful damage did take place, it was carried out by people professing to be Celtic fans……and that in so doing we’re weaker and less united than we could have been.

Having said ” move on”, I have to say I believe the FAC statement is excellent!

    JJ

I agree – the statement for FAC is a good one. It is also a necessary statement – if they want to maintain the focus on getting the OB act scrapped then they needed to disassociate themselves from the behaviour at Fir Park on Friday – which this statement hopefully does.

The other night I stated that blaming the Green Brigade is pointless and I maintain that. The damage was caused by individuals – and those individuals need to be identified and sufficient evidence gathered to allow any prosecution. Whether they are members of the Green Brigade, a Supporters Club or the Clydebank and District Philatelic Society is neither here nor there – individuals cause criminal damage, not “clubs”. Technology has moved on in recent years and perhaps that is possible through CCTV etc. My main concern would be that, if I were up on this charge, a jury wouldn’t look too closely at the evidence – the “no smoke without fire” brigade, if you’ll pardon the pun.

The Green Brigade’s relationship with the club is another matter. After trying to accommodate them by giving them Section 111 etc it looks like the club have had enough. This is a great shame since we all know the noise, support and humour they bring. It is always going to be difficult for the club to deal with a bunch of people who do not want to be identified but still want to be the most public face of the Celtic support.

  15. Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar on

Has there been a shift in the mindset and conduct of some within the Celtic support?

I’d say yes. It’s particularly evident at away games where anti social behaviour is often evident though not widespread.

Are the GB responsible for this shift?

The Ultra dynamics of the group have attracted a younger, thuggish element but it must be remembered that we’re all responsible for our own individual actions so it would be spurious to blame the actions of non members on actual members of the GB.

Were the GB responsible for the events at Fir Park on Friday night?

They’ve claimed no but have admitted that they knew criticism would come their way as a consequence of the vandalism taking place on ‘their watch’.

As a support and a club we need to be extremely careful that those responsible are held to account and equally that the innocent are left unblemished by this entire affair.

  16. HamiltonTim

If those responsible stepped forward and pre-empted forensic examination of CCTV footage by saying: “I broke a seat. I’m sorry. I got carried away. How much is the cost to repair it? How long am I banned for?”, even curmudgeonly old supporters would pat them on the back.

That would be a positive next step.

I think we’ve just said the same thing in a slightly different way, HT. I don’t think the GB can be held responsible for Friday’s events – only individuals. The other thing I’d add following what you’ve written is that I don’t think the GB have the capability to “police” the people who attach themselves. There are clearly a bunch of neds who was to be associated. Friday night only demonstrated that the GB have no control of these elements.

  18. The Battered Bunnet on

If it been your intention to isolate, undermine and extinguish the FAC campaign, you couldn’t have done much better than Friday night at Motherwell.

  19. Radio Scotland……..Call Kaye discussion featuring hurting Hun Les Gray pouring out his anti Celtic bile,McKay similar last night in the company of fellow nose Waddell; don’t believe PL brought this on the club, years of plaudits across Europe for our fans who have taken seriously their responsibility particularly in times of defeat…(Feyenord,Seville,Rugby Park and Fir Park to name a few) The SMSM refuse to acknowledge this nor do they have the good grace to be embarrassed about their European colleagues’ high praise for our club and special fans. Cue Friday night and the subsequent fall out…….. after a VICTORY,morons! The fans who misbehaved must also take their share of the blame for unacceptable delinquent behaviour and should have been ejected from the stadium by those responsible for crowd control which other decent fans payed for, reflected in the price of a match ticket.

Hope the Guardia Civil are redundant over the next 48 hrs although I have no worries that PL will be attracting their attention.

Philately (/fɪˈlætəliː/ fi-LA-tə-lee) is the study of stamps and postal history and other related items. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting, which does not necessarily involve the study of stamps. It is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps.[1] For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare, or reside only in museums.

I think they did more than accept criticism would come their way. I thought they admitted it was deserved as they’d field to self-police fans that were in their section.

Here’s the thing: I would say they know they were privileged in getting that block of tickets for an away game – that kind of thing is normally reserved for registered CSCs and it must have been done on the basis of trust. I guess they realised they’d blown that trust and that privilege. Whether they expected the end result is another matter.

I don’t expect that many of the 128 will remain suspended.

  22. just to mix up two topics, is it possible to have an interest in Green Brigade stamps, such as those put on broken seats in Fir Park, without being a Green Brigader, just for the study like.

“A Day in the Life of The Monifieth Loyal

I broke with personal tradition yesterday [and got the bus]

Having made the necessary arrangements with the Monifieth Loyal bus, come Saturday morning I made my way early to the designated pick up point. Much too early in fact. For those who don’t know Dundee the Kingsway is the main arterial route through the city for those heading north or south.

My early attendance at my rendezvous point on a freezing cold day would have normally made for a long cold stand. But not this day. I was literally glowing inside and it was nothing to do with having my daily dose of Ready Break. For bus after bus after bus, packed full of fellow bears, passed as I awaited my transport.

All over our country ladies and gents had risen early from their beds, left families and loved ones at home not out of defiance but out of love for and devotion to a football club. It reinforced the understanding within me that no matter the injustice, malevolence, disdain and hatred towards our club – we will never ever be beaten or downtrodden. Its not a single minded determination but a collective one. Its not “I am the person – Its “We are the people”.

And then of course there is the “crack” [I have no difficulty in believing you]. From memory quizzes about Crossroads characters to the merits of Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs – which led to some serious role play. The sight of two guys fuelled by a few shandies dancing the re-enactment of Travolta’s and Thurman’s Pulp Fiction dance in the corridor of a coach doing over 60 mph was one of those “had to be there” moments. “The back of the bus they canny sing”. Perhaps not but by gum they can’t half dance.

So a big thank you to the men and women of the Monifieth Loyal and hundreds of other buses like them from all over Scotland and the UK who, week in week out, not for fame or glory but love of a football club, add to the collective assertion. :-

    We are the People.”
