Stuart Armstrong’s cautionary tale

193

On balance I am sure you would want Stuart Armstrong in the squad than not.  He has been a clear success since arriving from Dundee United three years ago, but injury did not do him any favour last season, as he was unable to win back his starting place when fit.

The appetite for either the club or player to sign another one-year extension to his contract, which is due to expire in 12 months, will be low.  Stuart will either sign a long-term deal on terms equivalent to those he currently earns, leave under freedom of contract next summer, or be sold in August.

West Brom were keen to take the player a year ago, but relegation may force them to reconsider (and may reduce their attractiveness to Stuart).  While that move would have earned Stuart a huge contract, the timing was not right for Celtic, who were reluctant to allow a then-first choice player to leave before a replacement could be found.

Celtic will be easier to deal with this summer, but whether Stuart’s agent can attract a comparable contract offer as a year ago remains to be seen.  What is clear is that Brendan Rodgers is looking to bring fresh talent into the squad, and someone will those already of the fringe of the team will not find it any easier to get game time next season.

The last time Stuart needs is a season on the bench as his contract runs down.  I hope he stays and signs a long-term deal, but getting a bumper fee for him, or allowing the rest of the squad to note a cautionary tale on what to do when Celtic offer you a contract, would not be the worst thing.

  1. IMO McGinn will sign for us as Armstrong’s replacement in the squad. He will improve playing with better players and will be a mainstay for years to come. I think the captain’s comments on him when asked most difficult opponent are the most pertinent,

  2. Armstrong’s time for signing a long term contract was last season and I always thought he’d leave this season when the only deal that could be done last season was 1 year.

He’s a classy player and will be a miss. But we’re less dependent on him this time compared to last season. Even when fit he would not be a guaranteed starter.

At least the Green Brigade has the copyright on his song.

  3. A fit SA, on form, gives us a dimension we’d have to spend 5 million plus on the open market to replace.

Celtic gives SA a chance to play in front of the most passionate, adoring, huge crowds at the very top Euro level. He’s not getting that anywhere outside England’s top 4/6.

It is purely a question of his footballing ambition versus his avarice.

Using KT as a first-choice left back and a handy cover for centre back is a fast route to burnout. If his eventual destiny is to be a centre back or holding midfielder then start him there and get a new left back. Nobody reached the top thanks to their versatility.

*Hmmm, Paul Madeley in his Leeds career played in every position on the pitch except goalkeeper and wore every shirt from No.2 to No.11 (and occasionally No.12) as a result.

His natural ability to adapt to a different role on a frequent basis meant that he was often in the side chosen by the Big Mhan’s Carolina Don Revie at the expense of a ‘specialist’ in that position, though the majority of the time there was a player either injured or suspended whom Madeley would replace – usually in defence.

He also was capped 24 times by his country, again in a variety of positions, and his honours included and this is pre-premier league incidentally:

2 Champions medals, 1 2nd Division title, 1 FA Cup, 1 League Cup, 1 Charity Shield, 2 Fairs Cities Cups, 2 FA Cup runners-up, 1 Big Cup runners up and 1 ECWC runners up, no bad for a utility player.

It should also be noted that one of the Lions signed as an old fashioned inside forward starred at centre and right half for us and replaced the Wee Mhan in the Scotland side that defeated the reigning world champions.

He was in the calvinists winning LC side as well as the one that lost on the last day to the eventual title winners on goal average who they had defeated in that LC Final.

While with us he won 5 Champions badges, 3 SC, 2 LC and of course the Big Eared Cup as well as runners up in the latter, disgracefully he was only capped 7 times by his country and 4 times by the Scottish League. I may be wrong here but I believe he was one of the Celtic side that told Jock he didnae want tae play for his country after receiving abuse from the terracing.

  6. imo we have more than enough cover in midfield if SA decides to move on , if we were to be in the hunt for a midfield player it certainly should not be J.Mc.G

  7. !!Bada Bing!! on

Make SA a final offer, give him a week to sign it, or make him available for transfer, even if we get a paltry £5mil, it is better than him leaving for nothing.

  8. DD, it’s the way you tell ’em, jammy beggar! Was a Celtic player (I think, certainly looked like one, with training kit on – didn’t recognise him though) on my flight to Edinburgh also. HH

Caltontongs partner J is overcome with emotion at meeting Brendan on our flight home. BR was with his wife and family, so we did not want to intrude and ask for a photo. On leaving Glasgow Airport there. I just thanked him for our Double Treble and God bless to him and family. He thanked me and said he loved my Henrik Larsson shirt.

I like Stuart Armstrong. On his game he’s a top player, and I’d like to see him settle down and find his best years at Celtic Park.

If not, thanks and bye bye.

The fact that he’s in the last year of his contract isn’t really an issue that impacts on his value to interested buyers. Assuming he’s considered good enough to play in the middle tier of the EPL, the only season that matters to such clubs is the current season. He’s worth whatever difference they think he’ll make to their chances of top half/cup run/staying up.

Only 13 points separated Everton in 8th place and Southampton in 17th last season, little more than 1 point per place. Outside of the top 6 clubs, EPL survival is the singular concern of every club one year to the next. There is no point in such a club waiting a year to get him for free when their preoccupation is the here and now.

If these clubs think Armstrong will improve their chances of surviving in the EPL next season, his price is determined by the reward of success, versus the cost of failure.

  12. !!Bada Bing!! on

TBB- i think EPL money is £1.8m a place in the league, so £7-8 mil is pin money down there

  22. Better quality will have to be brought in , if we aim to make a better impression on getting into the CL group stages .A fair few of the players we have are not good enough to compete in Europe , past results prove that . . No question at the minute celtic are ahead of the pack up here , but last season was harder than the invincible season . This season will be even harder ,as they will mount a challenge , as will hibs . IMHO .a right back is required ,along with a mark reaper / Paul Elliot type centre half , no prisoners taken . The same in midfield where we are far to soft ,been saying it for years Scott brown is being singled out now , he needs a battler along side him to share the load , this guy has carried our midfield for years . CalMac , done well for us , but unfortunately doesn,t like the rough stuff . Armstrong can be improved on too , as I don’t think he will want to hang around , no celtic in him . John McGinn , sorry not for me , we need better than John McGinn . I only hope Brendan has a few players of real quality lined up , the days for celtic buying cheap should be well gone . The challenge for Europe is there , rise to it , and up here will be well taken care off .

  24. If Mr Armstrong does not want to play for CELTIC, then let him go to the highest bidder. In the words of the great poet, better one volunteer than ten conscripts. Young Mr Christie is more than ideal.

If Stuart leaves, thanks a lot and good luck.

Stuart Armstrong is one of the best pro’s at Celtic. Future Captain; indeed he could be it now if not for Scott Brown doing so well in the roll (never thought he was captain-material when he got the gig). I’ll be 100% gutted if Stuart Armstrong leaves, especially for next to nothing in the final year of his contract, to the English Premiership, where you couldn’t buy an 17 year-old him for the money quoted.

My gut says Brendan will get him the contact he wants if he is at all keen to stay. BR knows you need a team of leaders and Stuart is definitely one of them.
