Sunday: developing players and building a team

259

The truth is, football is not always exhilarating.  If we were two points off the pace going into yesterday’s Premiership game, all sorts of dramas would have taken place, but with an 8 point lead and a game in hand, there was no conceivable jeopardy.

Instead of contesting for all three points with his strongest available team, Brendan Rodgers chose to rest limbs ahead of the trip to St Petersburg, where he will attempt to defend a one goal lead.  This was, without shadow of a doubt, the correct course of action.  There are few enough advantages of playing in a weaker league, being able to rest players before a European game is the principle benefit.

Brendan also has developmental considerations.  Jack Hendry, Calvin Miller, Odsonne Edouard and Charly Musonda will all gain  from game time in the first team.  The expectations when playing for Celtic are uniquely onerous, these four young players will learn that from occasions like yesterday.

We came through a unique season last term.  The treble was won with a procession of brilliance, but our European endeavours ended in at the Champions League group stage.  If you look at the league table, you might be tempted to assume there is clear evidence that we are weaker now than a year ago, but the jury is out on that question.  If we progress to the Europa League last 16 on Thursday evening, Brendan’s second season will be set to eclipse his first.  This is perhaps a consequence of enduring some afternoons like yesterday.

Developing great footballers, building great teams, is not a linear process.  It takes time and patience.  Don’t bet against this squad delivering another treble and a European run which extends into the light nights.

My thoughts right now are with a barman I talked to last week in the Albert bar in Bowness in Windermere. He is a Wigan fan and I wished him all the best for his big game. Anything can happen with football I recall saying to him……..

  3. So Pep has lost it, been found out, his bubble has burst…………..maybe we could go for him to replace BR now that he has lost it, been found out, and his bubble burst.

  4. Paul67, I disagree only in that the jury is not out on whether we have progressed from lat season to this.

I don’t think we would have achieved the Zenit result last year.

Still dominant at home, but progressed in Europe, where we keep hearing we will be judged.

So okay, judge us there, and I see progress, 3rd in CL group after 4th last time out, winning first leg of the Europa league next round, last time out we didn’t qualify.

It’s Green and White you know.

“Finally I note we still have not heard anything from the SFA Compliance Officer Tony McGlennan with regards to his investigation into the issuing of a UEFA licence to Sevco in season 2011/12.”

Of course, Sevco wasn’t around until season 2012-13, after the death of Rangers (1872-2012), the club that benefitted from that licence. Nothing to do with Sevco, the investigation, because, as the Head of Licencing for UEFA, Andrea Traverso, has confirmed, it’s a new club.

“lets talk about what we are gonna do in Scotland to turn the team around and make it the best it can be. We should be proud of our football team. Please listen to Kev J sometimes ”

Turn the team around? – Do you not like all this success?

we should be proud??- Are you not proud?

Listen to KevJ sometimes?- Which bits and when?

Liked reading your stuff about during WW2.

Reading between the lines it seems that Catholic workers were let go while Protestant men stayed in the yard. Is this true?

My dad is long dead, but he was a sheet metal worker in Fairfields in Govan. He was 21 when war broke out, yet he ended up as flight crew in Bomber Command. I can’t figure out why he was taken from a war essential job.

Was there any real policy (official or not) of selecting men fron a specific background to be kept on as shipyard workers at the expense of another group who were volunteered by the company?

My Dad was very talented as a sheet metal worker & it was his same maths skills that he used as a navigator on Halifax bombers.

Were Catholic workers more likely to get let go from the yards?

I wish I’d talked more to him when he was still with us. Big regret that I didn’t.

    Like your historical posts. Thanks.

BTW my extended were all servicemen during WW2.

An uncle was killed at Dunkirk.

My Uncle Pat was captured in North Africa & spent 3 years in German POW camp.

My Uncle Jimmy was a gunner on Q ships guarding convoys & he got sunk twice. Each time ending up adrift for days in a lifeboat.

Broke his nerves & it took him years to get back to some kind of normal.

  9. Good morning, friends.

So I sit down to breakfast and my normal morning scroll back and find that since 11 last night there have been just 6 (six) posts. Or have the others all been deleted?

Oh well. Hopefully Ianbhoy929 will be along soon. Time to walk to work…..

  10. Wigan fans on the pitch last night I see. Can someone ask Keith Jackson how many of the city players were attacked? I’m assuming it was the whole team?

Or was it just understandable exuberance?

You raise a good point, though not relevant on this occasion.

Usually a quiet night shift meant the Mods had fired in. Correctly, more often than not. But with no explanation or notification given, people seem to have largely given up on the blog.

That’s a damn shame when you think of the quality of posters who’ve gone AWOL.

Individuals on the nightshift were relentlessly castigated until they stopped posting.

Where are the offended posters now ?

  13. Though to be honest Bobbio….while I may not agree with every deletion made by the moderators, the reason they were introduced is the same as the main reason why so many good people ‘walked away’ – page after page of ad hominem attacks and bickering between a relative handful that left you scrolling through as though seeking a creme egg in a dung hill.

A creme egg in a dunghill would probably have melted due to the heat.

Aye,there were some shocking occurrences, but a great many were by new posters, who,as GREENPINATA has pointed out, cleared off after their work was done.

Which was to get a reaction. Hence for instance, why KITALBA,AWENAW,ACGR,and many others are no longer on the site. Others, like JIMBO67 weren’t subjected to it themselves, but were sick of seeing it.

    Crying shame,bud.

More excellent analysis, and shows how much our performances ( and results ) have been affected by injuries to the likes of Rogic, Armstrong, Griffiths and Roberts.

Changing tack, but probably controversially,is it right to charge this idiot with a public order offence, rather than just give her a serious warning?

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/feb/19/woman-held-in-stoke-on-trent-over-abusive-note-on-ambulance

Of course she was bliddy stupid, and I’m not condoning it in any way,but I’ve frequently seen ambulances parking up without regard to other traffic.

Completely blocking the flow,on half a dozen experiences of my own.

One time,I had to go round a one-way system the wrong way because it had been blocked. Perfectly fine space available, btw. Another time,a fire engine and police car couldn’t get past, and had to go into the house and ask them to move it!

I think the clue is that this is happening more frequently. Aye,people lack sensitivity and patience, but I think the drivers could be a lot more considerate.
