Sustainable, successful, team development

799

There are several parts of Tuesday’s performance which could be improved upon, parts which will be exposed by the rigours of Champions League football, but we looked like an experienced European team, one who could go away from home, roll with the early season uncertainties, but still have enough in the tank to win comfortably.

For the last couple of years we have watched a team mature while Neil Lennon has continued to add young blood to the squad.  Fraser Forster has become an adept shot-stopper, puncher and kicker-with-both-feet.  Joe Ledley has developed into a disciplined anchor in midfield while Adam Matthews, Victor Wanyama and Beram Kayal have progressed even quicker than I am sure the manager expected.

Last season’s Europa League campaign contributed significantly to the development.  The team seemed to grow a few inches during the home win over Rennes, which propelled them onto the league title.  A Champions League examination will present no fears but will expedite progress.

We could be on the verge of the first sustainable, successful, team development plan in 40 years, one that delivers titles, significant progress in Europe and lives within its means.

Rest assured I think there are many who share your reservations regarding Kayal.

He reminds me of what Scott Brown used to do, charge at the opposition who, if they’re good enough, simply pass the ball round and behind you into the space that you’ve vacated.

  3. kayal has hardly kicked a ball in 8 months due to injury, before which we was by far and away our best centre mid, he has had a few poor games, but when he gets his fitness and sharpness up he’ll once again be our most important centre mid alongside, victor and ledley. kayal’s a class player who needs games, the same is true of izzy bad injury out for a whole season then people expect him to return at the same level, again, given time he will return. hooper = goalscorer that is all, have never been over impressed by his outfield play, but he gets himself in good goalscoring position, he will do so again this season.

we are lucky to have so many good young players and we should continue to seek out at least one or two a season, while selling when the times right for the right price, ala, ki 6.3 million raising to 7.5 million. foster, forrest, kayal, izzy, hooper, victor, mathews and ledley are all better in there respective positions and i would expect our club to get at least the same if not more for this mentioned above.

I think Kayal is a very intelligent footballer and he can read the game exceptionally well.

We are not seeing the real Kayal for whatever reason and I will leave it at that.

agree we should again be looking towards younger players with good potential, for what its worth, i think bhoys like fillip tw, rogne, watt, mcgeogh etc… were scouted and bought in at a very young age before we had to pay to much and all should do well for us. hope the same can be said of ibrahim as well.

if we’re gonna spend some money bringing in quality young players, we should stick to about 2 players in any given season as there potential will never be reached if they dont get the chance to play and playing time needs to be used to sell the club to these guys. Hence, there needs to be a similiar turnover of players leaving every season, which should be possible if scouting is good from under 9s to first team.

  7. Celtic have a superb opportunity this season to do very well as we have No Pressure apart from the pressure we put on ourselves (that can be considerable).

I also agree with those calling for a lot more viewings of players like Watt, McGeough, Twardzik etc and I really want these young lads piling on the pressure on to the “established” players.

A word of caution, I noticed the headlines in the tabloids saying Celtic are through basically. We are anything but through to the CL proper. These enemies of Celtic are setting us up for as big a fall as possible.

We have got ourselves into an 80/20 position IMO but we must play better for the 90 minutes in this next game. I definitely feel we can break this team early but our attitude has to be spot on, as I don’t think we have enough experience yet to be Good favourites.

We do of course have the best 12th man in the business.

It doesn’t matter what system that is brought in, and it is my opinion a new one has been engineered and that is why we are experiencing an extended “Global Financial Crisis”.

  9. How can it be that C. Ogilvie can sit, apparently mute and neutered, in his capacity as PRESIDENT of the sfa while the club he was finance director and company secretary of has brought the game so far into disrepute ; he has also admitted to being a participant in the ebt scheme, and while he,personally, may have done nothing strictly illegal,he certainly knew all about the side letters and the dodgy dealings. So….there he resides in his ivory tower, doing nothing, living off the fat of the land, living it large. And we are supposed to believe he is not beavering awy at a rate of knots to have this whole saga kept quiet? At the very least, kept tangled up in legalese and eventually sub judice, so that it can all disappear in the fog of conflict?

More questions : is he waiting for Longmuir, another compromised wheeler-dealer to be anointed as his successor,in order to keep it all ‘in house’ and perhaps for Ballantyne to be Longmuir’s number 2? And is he also biding his time until he gets the call to join UEFA,acquires his sinecure, ensconces himself in Switzerland and further distances himself from the hurricane he has helped create and then overseen?

These are just a couple of plain questions for him.

But in this scandal there are so many more questions for so many of the other players. And the presstitutes, whose job it is to ask these questions directly are asking nothing, nothing, nothing.

Only writing puff pieces for Ogilvies professed pride and joy, the mafia-like outfit formerly known as rfc.

His position is wholly untenable, but there he remains, like a spider no broom can reach to sweep away, secure in his position, bloated by arrogance and a sense of invulnerability.

A creature of the worst kind of fantasy fiction made real,at the apex of Scottish football.

    Staggering.

From what I saw we should have nothing to fear in the Champions League…

Agree we have came on a fair bit in Europe the past year, there was a maturity and understanding of the importance of keeping possession the other night but there’s still the nerves you would expect from our young team.

Can’t wait to go to the game next week.

We will prevail next week ‘and’ use the CL money to make ourselves untouchable domestically and progress year on year in the CL, Lawwell permittibg. Using CL money for investments that we can make even more money on, the daft wee division 3 club are irrelevant and will be for years.

Old rfc will be punished in time, sevco are just a daft wee club we have not played yet, much like Brian Munich from the Hamilton Pitz Sunday league, irrelevant.

I thought Ramos tonight proved why he is the Best Defender in the World. He was like an enhanced Victor Wanyama.

Pedro, sublimicity(?) taken to new levels with that first touch for the setup to score. Pedro is totally amazing on Both feet, Lubo2?

    Messi, Messi, Messi……

Iniesta’s amazing close control was mesmerising against the Strongest current defence in World football, and he laid it into the path of, IMO the very best Central Midfielder there has ever been, Xavi Hernandez, to put it by an inspired Iker Casillas, only for the team goalie to muck it up and make sure that next weeks exciting. ;)))

Brilliant post, but as you stated O’G will sit saying nothing while creaming the Scottish football fans hard earned cash right into his back bin and see nothing wrong in what he is doing. The SFA, SPL are as guilty as sin and will get there comeuppance soon, the only way we will ever see a sea change in Scottish Football is for the European authorities to get involved. This will take time but I think eventually they will have no choice.

It was a pleasure to watch the two best teams in the world but it was just a wee warm up to seeing Celtic for the first time in a year next week.

Watched Xavi, Iniesta & Pique warm up, pinging the ball to each other for about ten minutes, effortless inch perfect passes between Xavi and Iniesta, Tim convinced hey are Siamese twins that had a successful split when they were wee. McCourtesque…

Agree on Ramos, first time I’ve seen him, he’s up there with Pique, Muldini, Vidic etc, real Madrids defending was outstanding given what they were up against.

My only bet on the game was my usual one on Pedro first goal at a great 8/1, trust Christina to get the first a minute early, great player.
