Tannadice the scene for Cup quarter final

877

On Saturday my mind wandered, as it does, to the demise of Gretna in 2008.  The village team were bankrolled through the Scottish league system until promotion to the SPL in 2007 but then the cash ran out.  The club went into liquidation a few weeks from the end of the season but while most of the first team squad were made redundant, a few remained on a week-to-week basis to see out the remaining league programme, assisted considerably by the SPL and Livingston FC, who made their ground available.

Should Rangers fail around the same time, I thought, how apt it would be for us to meet them in the Scottish Cup final.  We would be there at the end to wave goodbye to a unique institution.  Witnesses to the final whistle on a club with an enormously controversial history.

Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed by Dundee United at Ibrox yesterday, who Flushed Away the opposition and won their first game against an SPL team in 2012.  We will have to scramble for tickets for the prospective event at another venue.

United seem set to try their hardest to spoil my enjoyment of the Cup.  Our quarter final draw against them next month will be one of the toughest games of the season.

Scenario for you. Please feel free to pick holes in it.

Say Whyte hasn’t been siphoning the cash into a Swiss Bank Account of his choosing. Or rather, say he has. Say he has built up his own little warchest. Say it’s very high by now. Say it’s enough to pay off HMRC in the result of a negative verdict.

What does that leave? Whyte running the club, without the biggest debt. What’s to stop him then going into administration, in an effort to eliminate the Ticketus debt? Rangers fans would certainly not hold that against him. Is it possible he’s building such a wedge in order to get HMRC off his back?

Could it be he has a plan after all?

A 50 million pound warchest in less than a year, if he has chapeau…doubt it though!!

  3. The old rangers board are pulling the strings at the record, and possibly the BBC. Smith and Johnston both chose the BBC to air opinions recently, within the past wek actually.

We have the Sun being pro Whyte ( or anti record, take your pick). Three major players doing battle over the soul of Rangers. If it had one, that is.

    The scenario seems to me to be thus;

Old board campaign will remove whyte ( led by record and BBC)

New takeover will go through, funded by the failed bid team (Paul Murray et al)

Year zero, clear the debt events will happen to allow a springboard for a stronger playing staff

Somewhere, a wealthy Hun will put down the leg bone of the boiled goat he has been gnawing on, and throw money to ‘ra bears’. He might get his pals to do the same. they might even sell shares, cause this time, the proles will bite.

Too much thinking, time for bed.

Let’s leave Craig whyte alone. He’s doing OK.

the class warrior in me arouses something approaching sympathy for the poor halfwits in their support who have been shafted royally by their lords and masters. Some poor scrote who is going to lose the £400 he has scrimped and saved to scratch together to get some kind of enjoyment in his otherwise bleak existence while bastards like Murray and Whyte live a charmed life.

I just hope that when they finally realise what has happened they go after the people who have shafted them.

Sorry if I didn’t express it clearly. My reading – Section 14 does indeed deal with a club going bust, but the general vote is on its expulsion. The admittance of any Newco is dealt with by the Board as per Section 11.

All members of the old board are disqualiifed under the SFA Fit and Proper person criteria as they were directors of a member club in the previous 5 years preceding an inslovency event. Even the SFA should notice that one!

A club isn’t expelled if it goes bust. It no longer exists. It has ceased to be etc etc.

The article deals with what happens to the defunct club’s share.

  12. Like most of you yesterday I very much enjoyed the United performance at Ibrox. Then strangely I started wanting a Rangers comeback because I thought where would I rather go in the quarter Final – Ibrox or Tannadice.

Anyone who followed Celtic in the eighties will tell you how difficult it was to get a win at Tannadice while at Ibrox they were 10 a penny.

So when I heard the draw today I thought typical. However who whould have been most disappointed?

Celtic and United will share under £0.5m but just think how much Celtic and Rangers would have shared had they met in the QF.

Gate receipts of £2m + TV money + corporate for the home team. Imagine what a hard p club could’ve done with that little windfall.

Nevermind not to be at least you will now only suffer one Celtic victory at Ibrox in March.

Just think what a nice Poor old rangers and c Whyte could b

then I read young Mathews is saying that we can get to the end of the season without losing a match

that may well be the case but Rogne last week took the best approach and played everything down

slight flaw in your theory..ticketus will have secured their loan not only against next 4 years season tickets sale but also against something more concrete – Ibrox, Murray Park, etc…

I don’t see them being duped by MBT

  16. Sorry lads , slightly off topic but oh well…..

Adieu my friends, in Dublin Town

    I bid you all adieu;

I cannot yet appoint the day

    When I’ll return to you.

I write these lines aboard a ship

    Where stormy billows roar,

May the heavens save our Fenian boys

    Till I return on shore.

Let no one blame the turnkey

    Or any of his men,

There’s no one knows but the two of us

THe man that stood my friend.

I robbed no man, I shed no blood,

Though they sent me to jail,

    Because I was O’Donovan Rossa,

    A son to Granuawale.

    I joined the Fenian Brotherhood

In the year of Sixty Four,

Bound to save my native land

    Or perish on the shore.

My friends and me we did agree

    Our native land to save,

And plant the flag of Freedom

At the head of Emmet’s grave.

My curse attend the traitors false

    Who did our cause betray,

I would tie a millstone round their necks

And drown them in the sea.

    There is Nagle, Noone, O’Brien

    And Power to make four

    Like demons for their conduct

    In hell they loudly roar.

    There’s O’Leary and young Mackey

    And the brave O’Donovan Ross,

It grieved me for to part with them

    When I left Harld’s Cross;

But if he lives and prospers, boys,

    The truth he does declare,

    Like O’Mahony in America

The green flag he must wear.

Cheer up my gallant Fenian men

The day is not far away,

When our Fenian boys the flag will raise

    And trample tyranny.

Our gallant sons beyond the seas

    Will join in unity;

And we will raise the flag of freedom

    And fight for liberty.

    starry:

The money from Ticketus. The other accumulated cash that’s nowhere to be seen on the pitch. Last year’s season tickets. The money saved by not paying bills as they coe due. Transfer fees recieved. You know what I mean. Any income.

Could it ALL be getting shunted aside for settling the tax debt, leaving them only Ticketus and Azure to get rid of?

  19. James

Given Whtye’s previous businesses and dealing with HMRC and being in court every 5 minutes for not paying even the smallest of bills, there is more chance of jelly and ice cream being on the next Ibrokes corporate bun fest and skintydome.

    Starry:

I’m not suggesting a NewCo. If he can pay off HMRC there’s no need for things to get that far. Rangers could survive.

Can he be constructing a safety net which allows them to repay the government and then renegotiate the deal with Ticketus or threaten to file for administration?

There are no proceedings against Rangers at present for non-payment of bills, and all the rest is conjecture. I am asking, could it be done?

Could Rangers emerge from this actually having paid the HRMC debt and in a position to deal with the rest?
