Tax may be optional, we’ll find out tomorrow

293

Twas the night before Christmas, when all thro’ the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;…..
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar plums danced in their heads
Tomorrow we will learn if the Supreme Court decide in favour of HMRC or Rangers’ liquidator, BDO, on the Big Tax Case, which saw the former club pay dozens of players, managers, other clubs’ managers, and executives, millions of pounds through Employee Benefit Trusts (EBTs) without paying Income Tax.

EBTs were designed to allow employers to assist staff with crisis loans.  Most organisations do this at some point.  If the sum is small enough (“Here’s £20 from petty cash to put fuel in the car”), the payback period brief enough (“Here’s £500 until payday”), or the organisational oversight not too onerous (“The boss says you can have this, pay it back when you get the insurance money through”), such agreements are often informal.

If the above conditions do not apply, the employer would need to setup a Trust, whereby it could pay the loan, which would then be repaid.

Employee Benefit Trusts were not introduced as a way to allow millionaires to avoid paying the Income Tax and National Insurance but they were exploited in exactly this manner by Rangers, whose liquidators continue to spend creditors’ money to in the hope of avoiding tax which will never fully be paid from the limited Rangers’ creditors’ pot.

If BDO are successful, tomorrow you will see many poor and disadvantaged celebrate the triumph of the rich, who have reduced money available for public services, welfare payments, health, education and even defence.  The pitiful will toast the pitiless.  You may despair at their lack of awareness.

I hope this doesn’t happen.  I hope Income Tax hasn’t been optional for the rich all these years.

If HMRC are successful, those millionaires may find themselves with demands for the payment of Income Tax.  The public purse may be in line for a small windfall.

It will not have escaped your attention that, in this circumstance, Rangers used unlawful tax arrangements for many years.  Arrangements that were not legally available to other clubs.  We will explore this in another blog later today.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  Christmas doesn’t always come; you might be onto (sugar) plumbs.  Tax may be optional.

    Stuart Armstrong?

Why would anyone want him out the door?

Outstanding in his first six months, played out of position in a poor team playing badly the next.

And showed his quality last season. Week in and week out

I’m hoping he doesn’t read some of the stuff on here about him. ,mibbe have his nose in a few law books instead.

    SA must stay!

  2. House for sale. Buyer and Seller both happy with the offer. It can still take six weeks for the deal to be completed.

Stuart Armstrong and Celtic may well be in agreement but it still takes some time for all the legalities to be addressed.

From a playing point of view, I am with the Green Man on this. Stuart has had a good season but he is certainly not the finished article. I would be more concerned by far were it Broonie we were talking about. I would also be more concerned about losing Rogic or Mcgregor.

I expect ( and would prefer) if Stuart Armstrong stayed but I will not be distraught if he goes.

  3. Steve Austin was NEVER a Celtic supporter, he may have went to a Casey school but seemingly went to see the died team with his da.

  4. Hopefully some improvement tonight. Before the”Its only friendlies”posse start up.I know it is.Not expecting us to be at full pelt. What I do expect is for the players to show they have not forgot how to trap a ball, pass a ball, and not look as if its the first time they have met each other.

Oh,and start getting the ball forward a lot bloody quicker.Griff and Dembele got about 3 kicks each. They are the ones that need to get up to speed, get attempts on goal.

    There ye are.

I dont think anybody has a bad word to say about SA as a guy.

We are talking about his football ability.

I still hold, that you have to prove you are a top player over a period of time.

It cant happen in one season.

Lets see him do it in the CL this season, which i would love.

Good player, yes indeed. Top Class, not yet.

He should be learning how to achieve consistent performances rather than anything else.

Brendan will be telling him similar i imagine.

  10. Johnny Hayes gave us a lot more problems than McKay ever did. I think he had one good half against us.

£600,000 is a decent price for them to get for a player who couldn’t lace the boots of wee Jamesie.

Then again apart from Jack and Alves that goes for the rest of Pedro’s. New guys.

This was meant to be an add on to a post that did not appear about me no knowing anything about Dorran. Just incase anybody was wondering.

  14. Now I’m no wordsmith, and frequently make grammatical errors, but then again I’m not a journalist getting paid thousands to produce articles for a well known Scottish daily rag. Just read this in the Daily Rectum, a quote from Pedro…

If that vision and mission reaches the standards we hope, you are looking to be present in Europe all the time.

“At all the clubs I’ve worked for we established called a code of conduct.

Paul McStay used to play for us but no longer does yet we continue to be,and continue to be successful.

I hope Stuart stays but if he goes our world won’t end.

*other players can be used here but Paul was/is my favourite Celt (and was as gifted a midfielder as you’ll see)

  16. If HMRC are successful, those millionaires may find themselves with demands for the payment of Income Tax. The public purse may be in line for a small windfall.

    Don’t kid yourself.

Like the bankers before them, they will find a way to get the public purse to bail them out.

  17. Dorrans is a similar type signing as Cowie was for Hearts. Solid, unspectacular player who has did well at Championship/lower EPL level for a few years. Both have similarly been on the fringes of Scotland without ever getting any more than about a dozen caps. Better than the likes of Holt and Jack but wouldn’t get in our squad let alone threaten the bench.

I’m watching from afar and with interest …

Strategic dilemma for my favourite CEO….

Tierney Dembele and Armstrong are worth a combined £40m imo

    Sell now?

sell after CL qualification if it materialises?

Sell after CL if we fail to make it through?

Keep and see how far we can go in CL.?

Worse case scenario we are about £40m richer.

Best case scenario we are about £75m richer.

It’s a tough decision. It’s a decision that will see the club leap forward but at different rates depending upon which choices are made and how we progress.

The answer of course lies with BR who I would renegotiate contract with. Slipping in a performance related end of year financial position element .

It’s not about players at this juncture it’s about BR and the application of his template and approach.

For me Dembele is not only the most valuable but ironically the most expendable. closely followed by SA.

You can’t hold back talent or ambition.. At individual or club level.

Wimbledon related … sort off …. so, feel free to scroll by, if you want …. (of course, you may be doing that already) ..

I am here to say, once again, that the Canuck, Milos Raonic, will go farther at Wimbledon than the always dour Andy Murray. And I am so confident that I am prepared to back that up with 10 quid to Mary’s Meals, if Murray advances farther than Raonic. And double that, if they actually play each other during the tournament and Murray wins. Of course, if Raonic does better/’wins, you pay.

And AM is a stronger favourite, and I am offering even money …. so I am practically giving money away!

I am confident (but not stupid), so this offer is open to the first person who accepts it… sorry, I know there are a whole lot of you who would like to bet on Murray, but the doc would kill me if I did that! :)

PS … not sure about the CQN rules on gambling …. could be my first red card! Woo hoo!

  29. I must have missed the quote from Stuart Armstrong where he said he wanted to leave Celtic and wasn’t happy here. FFS dont you realise its just paper talk. Its BS. Look he’s in negotiations and wants to get the best possible deal for himself or rather his agent does.

I thought Dorrans was a bit more central? Goalscoring midfielder.

He’s a good player at Championship level but hasn’t had any impact on the EPL. He’s a better player than what they had in Holt, Windass and Halliday.

That said, he’s turning 30 and will have little re-sale value.
