Teenage kicks

946

So how do you feel about playing a couple of teenagers, Filip Twardzik and debutant Jackson Irvine, in central midfield, but dropping a couple of SPL points?  Good, I hope.  Welcome to the world of player development.

For a decade or more Celtic produced prodigious youth teams but watched as Dundee United, Hibs, Hearts even Hamilton Accies graduated more effective adult players.  Key to this is perhaps ensuring that players are tested at a higher level at key times in their development.  In short, if you have not played regular first team football by the time you are 22 there is a good chance you will not fulfil your potential.

There is cost to this development, you’re not going to win all the time, especially when the two teenage central midfielders are surrounded by other young players: Adam Matthews, 20, Tony Watt, 18 and James Forrest, 21.  Half time substitute, Victor Wanyama, is still only 21.

I’m looking forward to seeing more teenage kicks in the coming months.

  1. The thing with the games against Barca is that we should regard them, as supporters at least as tests, exhibition games, but we need to be real about our prospects. We could give them a game at home if we are totally focussed, but Barca are going to walk the group, we need to concern ourselves with the Spartak and Benfica – both of whom we could beat at home and perhaps sneak something away.

    It’s all good.

i suppose in the highly unusual circumstances of this year, the board and lennie think they may get a couple of first teamers out of this in a couple of years. you can’t argue against it

I always stay `till well after the final whistle andI didn`t hear any booing at the end yesterday. From which part of the ground did it emanate?

  5. BRTH,

I have bored generations silly talking of George Connolly. Imo, THE best player to grace a Celtic jersey in my 60 odd years. Bar none, including Bobby Murdoch, who WAS the best passer of a ball I’ve ever seen. We had some wonderful players then and they were gradually blooded by Mr Stein. I have a feeling that Mr Stein used to bring one of that young generation on when we were 3 up against whoever we were playing. And we played some great football against the very best.

To be honest, every time I watch Barca they seem to win, except some of their games against Real.

However, I will take your word for it as you are obviously over there watching them a lot more more than myself.

Agree with you though. I will trust in Lenny

I heard the booing from my position in the Jock Stein Stand. It did not sound as though it was exclusively from that location. No one near me was obviously booing and, as soon as we hard any booing, we started clapping the Celts and the Boo Radgies seemed to shut up quickly.

I am concerned that, within our support, there is still a strong appetite from some to feel confident in shouting out football illiterate condemnation of our manager, at home games, without suffering any reprimand from surrounding fans. One such overconfident lunatic several rows behind me in the Jock Stein Upper shouted out- “Why you playing that boy (Watt) wide left, Lennon? (it’s a) Joke!”

  13. Confessional moment…

Sevco wins by a big margin and, despite myself, I feel uneasy. Logically I know that they are detached from my football reality, adrift in the fourth division and in no way relevant to my team’s season. So what makes my stomach twist at the thought of their smugness at a big win I the wee pond? Is it because I crave justice that has yet to be done, and when this justice is (as we can only hope) dealt out will these feelings be a thing of the past?

I know, I know, we are I. The Champions Leagueand in rude health and they are on the precipice, but, as I said, a confessional moment…

Never posted after the game yesterday (my wee band had a gig last night) – but had to add my wee bit to some of the comments others have made re: yesterday’s crowd (some of them) reaction.

Some of the filthy swearing / booing was nothing short of disgraceful – absolutely pathetic and truly hun-like. Some of the people at the game yesterday would be better off never coming back to Celtic Park – vile language, vile attitude. Really wonder about the upbringing that some have obviously endured.

Fair enough to criticse poor play or lack of application, but their was a sizable sprinkling of idiots yesterday who have no conception of what the word “support” actually means – “…f*****g sh**e ya useless c**t…” was their mantra from about 10 minutes in till the end of the game. There is little point in even speaking to people like this – I doubt that they would have an alternative vocabulary, and I do wonder why the come to see Celtic – they bring a negative poison to our ground that we would be better without. Worst kind of hun-like glory hunters.

The Celtic Blog says it well here – http://thecelticblog.com/2012/09/blogs/match-report-beware-idiots-at-home-celtic-twa-hibs-twa?

So, to the hun-like misery-guts that come to do nothing but criticise – why don’t you GTF and let the rest of us support the team – away and join the huns, ’cause you sure would suit each other.

I agree that there has to be fundamental change in Scottish Football and that there has been– over a 20 year period— a move towards a commercialism and a scism which has at its core the progression of Rangers Football Club.

I genuinely believe that one of the biggest financial institutions in the country played a part in trying to weaken every Scottish Club other than Rangers by allowing that corporate entity a degree of financial leeway which negated the need for any new Scottish talent at all to start with, whilst at the same time ensuring that rival clubs were given nothing like any type of comparative financial assistance to either spend in the transfer market or to develop young players.

Scottish football has been financially gerrymandered for a generation!

Thankfully that trend is dead— dead , buried, exhumed if not exposed ( as yet ) and cremated.

We need to finish the job and ensure that any type of corruption is banished but never forgotten.

Separately Celtic need to develop. They need to develop commercially, socially, and physically with a strategy that looks commercially and emotively beyond Scotland and once again in to the heart of Europe.

When we were at our greatest, Rangers were also playing in the European Cup Winners Cup Final. Scotland– with a team that was not a patch on the lions— were humbling the world champions at Wembley. Scotland was just about THE footballing nation in Europe.

That will not happen again no matter what changes are made at the SFA or elsewhere– unless— gradually– we— Celtic— put together a team that can excite, fire the imagination, fuel the support and unleash the weapon that is the Celtic pound– as someone said earlier– we should be a marketing agents dream because of the worldwide support for a team that does not often feast at the very top table these days.

    It can be done.

By the way here is another rare clip.

For those who never saw Jimmy and Bertie at their very best, nor recognised how football changed that day in May 1967 have a look at this. Listen to Stein’s words and then watch as his wee local side tear the Bernabau apart.

We have players within our group who will have aspirations to join Barca etc.

Barca have been relatively bad travellers in Europe over the last few seasons, usually because they have difficult fixtures surrounding their European games. ;))

Neil wants his team to be a flair and attacking team, and they will become it, but it is gonnae be backs to the wall in the ol Nou Camp, and I would not rule it out that we get out of there with a point, which would make the next game even more difficult.

I do reckon we can take Barca at home and if we have been Destroyed 5-0 over there, I think it will not be a bad thing at all.

I have said for years n years that Barca can beat any team in the world by 5 goals (allied to 70+ % possession against these teams), even the Premierships MIGHTIEST.

Celtic can, and always have, beaten Europe’s finest at home.

  24. In a support of 40, 50, 60,000 there will always be a difference of opinion and a difference of opinion in how to express that opinion. We all know of supporters near us who moan constantly, we all know of supporters who berate particular players and who use colourful language. Maybe I have grown used to it – it happens and frankly, it’s fine if it does. It’s mostly a fleeting frustration, and often turns to the same fans jumping around to celebrate a goal or applauding a move. People booed yesterday – I don’t care about that. I didn’t, and some did. We’re not Corinthians, we’re not in the members area at Lord’s. I am not condoning any or most of what we hear, but I do think a large whack of it is frustration and lack of patience, rather than a violent or menacing undercurrent.

Tom Williams was hanged in Crumlin Road Gaol Belfast at 8a.m. on Wednesday 2nd September 1942,aged 19.

Before Williams was executed he inscribed some messages on the backs of some playing cards. On one he wrote “To ever who receives this to pray for me always & pray for the cause for which I am dying. God Save Ireland….”Father Alexis who witnessed the execution spoke after to his friends in the prison chapel. “I met the bravest of the brave this morning”, he said, “Tom Williams walked to that scaffold without a tremor in his body. The only people who were shaking were us and the hangman. Father Alexis concluded by saying to the remaining prisoners, “I’ve one other thing to say to you. Don’t pray for Tom Williams, pray to him, for at this moment Tom is a saint in heaven.”
