Textbook away performance, Brand Britain

3353

I was a bit annoyed at BT’s halftime analysis which suggested Celtic were more than fortunate to be level at that stage.  Salzburg had just enjoyed their best 15 minute period of the game, but, from beginning to end, Celtic’s performance was a textbook lesson on how to play away from home in Europe.  We took our chances and drew our defensive line well in front of our box.  This is how it’s done.

Were you as comfortable as I was during the final minutes last night?

Having watched the performance against Aberdeen on Saturday, when we bossed the game but were penned back when, with two debutants and a returning Scott Brown in the team, the legs faded in the last 30 minutes, I expected the same to happen last night.

Instead, Scott’s goal arrived on 60 minutes, which infused Celtic legs with adrenalin.  This was the crucial moment of the game.  We conceded that fabulous goal from Soriano during the final 30 minutes, but this was also our best period of the game.  Wakaso (who is a player, b.t.w.) ran himself into the ground – literally.  Brown, Johansen, Izaguirre and Ambrose all covered enormous areas of the pitch.

Instead of going through turmoil in the closing stages, we saw Salzburg drop deep, acknowledging the clear danger they could concede for a third time.

The one obvious question is, how did we pick Craig Gordon up for free?

Brand Britain

Brand Britain is damaged. Last night’s vote was a high water mark for independence, so far, but the demographic breakdown suggests support for change is strongest among the young. If the three major UK parties have any intention of maintaining the status quo they need to indulge in considerable Nation Building.

The football business in Britain is in the hands of two closed-shop cartels, one in England and Wales [controlled by the affluent], and one in Scotland [controlled by the unambitious]. This arrangement has disenfranchised Scottish football and drains our economy of tens of millions of pounds per year. It is a clear manifestation of second class status for Scotland and our economy, which is unacceptable for anyone who considers the UK to be one nation.

Politicians with an interest in pushing the buttons of the people, should use this time to call this arrangement out for what it is.

You no voters must love the cardigan and fat sally.

Because you voted with them…hand in hand…well done, a vote for loyalists.

Hope you are proud this morning

    Enjoy your money

Dear oh dear. One bizarre post after another. Give it a rest. Thank God it’s over and we can now, hopefully, get back to talking about Celtic related matters, square sausage, how to fit whirly gigs, amortisation and television weather girls!

  3. Brand Britain is and remains one of the strongest, most progressive, and powerful brands in international politics.

I’m glad we are still part if it and will be for the foreseeable future.

If that upsets the ridiculous Nats on here I really don’t care.

A considered reflection in the previous thread.

I see various folk elsewhere suggesting that the +65s were ‘scared’ into voting No, and at face value – with 73% for No and Pensions a major focus of the No campaign – this might be an easy assumption. It may even be true for individuals.

It does though entirely overlook the fact that these folk were born into a Britain that, while it doesn’t exist anymore, has informed a lifetime.

Their connection with that Britain runs deep, and should not be diminished by writing off their vote as a reaction to the Fear message.

My favourite weather girl is the Beebs own Carol Kirkwood.

A bonny wee Scots girl with a lovely smile, good sense of humour and a great figure.

However, I think the gorgeous Judith Ralston has a sexiness about her that young Carol lacks.

Wow, I need a lie down.

    Hope you are well!

  7. Like a number of posters last night I was bemused by Ronny’s substitutions thinking it was time for holding what we had . It’s only later that it’s occurred to me that maybe Ronny had it right and the changes in fact ensured there was no tendency to drop deeper and deeper as is often the case with sides who are then undone at the death. Just a thought.

Paul 67. I think you were watching a different game for me with Efe and Izzy at fullback we were always likely to concede a goal the midfield was constantly being over run and up front we didnt have much going for us but imo lady luck smiled on us and you need that now and then and Craig Gordon was immense if it had not been for him we could easily have lost 5 goals. We have a point in the bank and we must continue to improve before the next Europa cup match.H.H.

  9. I used to post here years ago but just read the blog now instead of actually posting however, I am prompted to return unfortunately not for football reasons – cut me some slack for my first return post please I am fully aware of the sentiments of the vast majority of feeling on here in that regard i.e. this is Celtic blog/forum and should be addressed as such.

This is the most effective public outlet I can think of to get this message/plea “out there” and it’s about the referendum result (I am a yes voter) however, on Facebook/Youtube there is “evidence” of vote manipulation.

Please Google this and see for yourself. I draw folks attention to this because I’m just a wee voice with no official ear to speak into. This blog has many a clever poster on here so make your own judgement call on those videos and make whatever noise you possibly can. Vote rigging in my homeland is unbelievable I am in shock.

    Hail hail

    Sorry for the politics

I see that you had your first family addition – congratulations on that. Watching our offspring grow up tends to have the effect of making most of us a wee bit more altruistic as we contemplate the hardships they may face – unless your thinking of sending him to Eton of course?

I spend a fair bit of time in Scandinavia. They seem to have it right in my opinion – paying higher taxation but with decent healthcare, education and a relatively safe and meritocratic society. Not bad for a bunch of people who were raping and pillaging a few years ago…

    Repost.

    .

Amid all the noise of the referendum I couldnt help but notice that the self described nouveau aussie gob having yet another dig at Ireland/the Irish.

You really do have a problem with us dont you.

    .

  12. Paul,

I’m not quite as happy with our performance as you. I thought we lacked a bit of quality in possession and gave the ball away far too often. We don’t seen able to take the sting out of a team by keeping possession for a while, and too often invite pressure on ourselves.

Still, with new and returning players we got a good point and that gives us a foundation to build on in the remaining group games. We will get better.

  13. A bit harsh but here goes –

For all the criticism that Ronnie gets, he’s not the one who doesn’t control the ball properly, passes the ball to the opposition, switches off in defence or doesn’t have the pace or fitness required.

If the players could do these functions properly, tactics wouldn’t matter so much.

Some of our guys should take a look at themselves after these European performances and ask themselves why they look outclassed.

And then do something to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

If you’re lucky enough in a job which pays upwards of £100k or even a million a year, it’s expected that this is your top priority in life. The demands of your post come first by a long way.

  14. petec,

    Percy Vere with Ronny?

He needs adapt his over-arching game plane to suit his players abilities. If he does that his players may produce better team performances.

    Paul67,

I watched last night’s game on Setanta and it was nowhere near as good as the game you watched on BT.

    Good post!

I remember Jock Stein saying the best place to defend is in their half of the park!

    Anyway, hope you are well!

  17. baba2 – this “evidence” does it include the pile of Yes votes on a No table in Dundee? The Council have already confirmed they had not been counted yet and were on that table waiting to be moved to be counted.

Right enough politics for now. Back to hating rangers / sevco. Does anyone know if they can meet payroll this month? #ticktock

  19. Annoyed at BT, Paul….you wanna have heard BeIn Sport’s coverage in the Middle East. Some English clown reminding us four times of Celtic’s away record in Europe and our “one horse race” in the SPL.

I thought it was an accomplished performance……just sorry that the experience we will gain will be inevitably lost when both central defenders walk next year….shame we don’t have the proposition to hold on to players and partnerships like that. They are not the finished item, but some promise there.

    Hail Hail.

  20. Derbyshire

Totally agree. After a few minutes of shaking my head in disbelief at the subs I began to realize the subs were tactical. We kept the ball up their end of the field and pressed them very well. Interesting (and refreshing). I think we can beat Red Bull at CP…..their defence looked weak. Good attacking team though.

Also though against Aberdeen we didn’t cross the ball often enough…..probably because it has been so long since we had a proper CF. Looking forward to Motherwell game. Hopefully not flat (usual after mid week Euro game).

  21. Paul

I’m in disagreement with you re late game anxiety.

I retreated behind the couch each time we gave the ball away in the closing minutes.

Craig was definitely the difference between the draw and defeat.

Our defence was all at sea during the second half.

The free kick conceded was unnecessary and resulted from panic.

We badly need to shore up the defence.

Hopefully the return of Lustig and or Matthews will achieve that.

On reflection I think we stole the point and Craig Gordon was wearing the mask.

  22. It is a celtic blog.

Posts outlining social injustice issues. reflect the celtic ethic and are part of the reason behind our clubs existence.

Agree that Lucy has her charm, however, she might be a wee bit too delicate for me if you know what I mean.

    If you don’t, I am a big fat(tish) guy!

  24. What game were you watching Paul67?

We seemed incapable of finding a team mate with a pass for most of the match, we were unable to gain any real foothold on the game due to being outnumbered in the centre of the park and lost all composure after scoring both goals playing panic football.

The tactic of how to play away in Europe was against Maribor.

The formation last night was the same as it was in Poland.

I think we stood more chance of controlling and winning the game with Kayal in the middle in place of either Commons or McGregor (probably Commons)

  25. Hi RogueLeader,

Yes that video and others however, I am more than willing (relieved actually) for there to be a legit explanation. Losing the vote was extremely disappointing however, lost fair and square is acceptable, losing by any other means is not.

Thanks for looking and reaching a conclusion that’s all I can ask

    Hail Hail
