The beating of Barca, II. This time it’s Tony.

1064

Where do we start discussing last night?  Perhaps the end of the night.  There was joy in abundance, not only inside Celtic Park, but in the streets surrounding the game and in a hundred thousand homes across the world.  This joy manifest itself into a great sense of community.  That performance brought tears, hugs, spontaneous jumping up and down, and not only from Celtic fans.  Messages have poured in from fans of other SPL clubs and beyond.

This is what great sport can do for people.

Brother Walfrid has excellent timing.  He managed to arrange our kick-off meeting to coincide with match day four of the Champions League group stage.  Those of us who attended the anniversary celebrations on Tuesday were reminded what Celtic is all about, the best team in the world were in Glasgow waiting to play, the fairy tale script was written, but could it be delivered?

It’s the details which are most impressive.  Mikael Lustig looked like he could play in any team in any league.  He was comfortable and composed throughout.  Adam Matthews, deputising for an injured former Player of the Year, played out of position flawlessly.  I watched him struggle at left back on his Celtic Park debut in a friendly against Wolves last year; it defies explanation how far he has progressed.

Please forget about Victor’s goal, it will only detract from his incredible midfield performance.  His composure, skill and assertiveness troubled Iniesta and Messi all game.  This was all the more impressive given the absence of captain, Scott Brown.

Georgios Samaras was crucial for most of the evening.  He was the one player Barca seemed afraid of, although a lack of training caught up with him before he was subbed.

I’ll not burden Tony Watt publicly with the comparison I made of him earlier in the season but he possesses an impressive array of attributes: upper body strength, pace-with-the-ball and a nose for goal.  I’m tempted to say he will continue to improve but, to what level?  Without injuries to Hooper, Lassad and Forrest it’s unlikely he would have enjoyed as much time last night.  Sometimes Fortune Favours the Celtic.

All of Europe would have been impressed with Fraser Forster last night, dubbed La Grand Muralla, the Big Wall, by a Spanish newspaper.  He will play for England, so too with Kelvin Wilson if he maintains this season’s form.

The only man with a problem today is Neil Lennon.  Tactically the two games against Barcelona have been as accomplished as any I have witnessed.  Neil needs to know how to follow that in Lisbon. I’ve no idea.

Happy Birthday Celtic!

You got me cracking up – ordered down from a table fabulous, tears coming again

  2. Couple of words in addition to yesterday results.

I read many reports on Russian websites on Spartak Moscow play against Benfica.

They played awful game. Sporting won 2:0 but the referee made wrong decision, disallowed another goal for Benfica. Benfica missed from penalty spot. Could be 4:0. Spartak created only one chance to score the goal.

They are rubish, decomposed team. I hear the voices who call for their coach head.

Brothel at the back, in midfield, in attacking line and in the dressing room.

As I said before the competition started, six points from them is standard.

Betis play in green and white so they’re known as the “verdiblancos.”

    The auto-translate fouled up!

A better translation would be, “No one should ever doubt the character of Glasgow’s Green and Whites.”

Unlucky that we lost even I think we played well. Happy to be back. No words to describe the atmosphere at Celtic Park.. #ChampionsLeague

  7. Dear CQNers,

    Oh Watt a night indeed:)))

There were a couple of occasions late on when a ‘drop ball’ situation arose; Chico indicated that he would return possession to the Catalan team.

He nudged it up the park to them. He found one of their men, on purpose, pretty much.

He did not blooter it ‘down the channel’, or into a corner for the keeper to retrieve, thus wasting time.

    Outstanding…

  8. Evening all

So glad I had the day off work. – gave me chance to watch the match again. Tremendous actual match with not a failure in the Hoops- a much better performance than in the victories over Man U and Milan and certainly the happiest I have felt walking along Janefield St since the 4-2 game in 79. I wish I could be like Tony Watt!

I may though be in a minority on this blog in viewing the Hearts situation with alarm. As their demise seems imminent- no administration farce here just straight to oblivion- it does seem as though the SPL will be thrown into disarray if they disappear. What happens to the results they have achieved this season if they cease to exist? I lived in Edinburgh for a few years and had a few Jambo mates and feel sorry for them in a wAy that I never did with fans of Zombie FC.

Still I am sure I’ll get over their exit.

William “Sandy” Pullar Jardine is how he is described in Wikipedia. Hence, Willie Pullar. I bet he`s glad he`s no longer at school…..did he, in fact , go to school?

  11. What has really impressed me this year is the general fitness of the players. we weren’t great against Benfica but we weren’t off the pace.

I remember some matches under MON like the Lyon 3-2 that they were playing at a much higher tempo and that we were very sluggish by comparison.

Part of Barca’s success is that they are all phenomenal athletes – we didn’t look bad by comparison.

  12. Listen guys, I’ve just had a wee thought. How’s about we make tomorrow a “be nice to a sevconite day”

Don’t you think they’ve suffered enough?. In work today they looked absolutely destroyed, they could hardly bring themselves to look in my direction, never mind indulge in some footy banter.

So how’s about it? One day? Or do you think we should wait till after the FTT result?

  13. Cap doffed to Rob Harris of the Associated Press in the San Francisco Chronicle:

“With a disciplined approach not adopted by some financiers and unruly fans in Scottish football recently, Celtic’s dogged defense held off the four-time European champions to win 2-1 in Glasgow.”

  16. Good Day fellow Bhoys and Ghirls

Missed the match originally as I was at work, but caught parts of it when Sportsnet (Canada) repeated it late night. A fantastic game and atmosphere…I’m envious of those who experienced it live.

Sadly, I recorded the game and I got picture but no sound. Does anyone know of a place where I can purchase a DVD of the match?

  17. fergus slayed the blues on

Why are the peepil who run Scottish football still desperately trying to shoehorn the most corrupt club ever in the history of the world game back into their top flight .

If the only reason is financial then, I am sorry the game here is finished ,if it’s because of who they are then ,I’m sorry the game here is finished .

If they are admitting that football in Scotland cannot survive without such a corrupt club then Celtic fc need to find somewhere else to play football as the game here will be FINISHED .

Last night I watched my club play the best team in the world ,they were outplayed but not out fought ,they did not deliberately foul or break up play even though they knew Barca were always dangerous when they had the ball ,THEY PLAYED FAIR and they got the result ,that is why I will always cherish the win and the memory .

That is why we are more than just a club

    hail hail

Dont often listen to Talk Sport but who was the numpty hosting the show tonight abt 5ish? Caller was asking how Barca didnt have 2 men sent off? Numpty came back with “I think the ref wanted to keep 22 players on the park” Caller came back with Song committed 3 bookable offences but numpty was having none of it and said it was he was a Celtic fan he wanted down to 9 men. Numpty also had a go at Neil Lennon being a hothead.

  20. Raymac namechecking me for reasons i don’t understand. Not posted in an age…. what have i done?

However, today very much the day for posting. Simply awesome from us last night and in every euro game this season.

I knew the day 10 men played rangers off the park a couple of seasons ago tgat Lennon was building something special. We’re not even there yet.

This is all very cool. So much easier enjoying your football when it’s like this… sure, i’m a glory hunter. We all are, but it’s so much easier when we hunt in packs; our support, our manager, that squad and even that board of directors. Lennon has brought it altogether and even cqn is an easy read these days.

Oh, and what is big Vic? Really , he’s not normal.

  21. Can anybody please please get me a ticket for last nights game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a fantastic performance from everyone involved, done us a powere of good world wide, that’s for sure.

my only concern now is that we hang onto our assets. I know very well the financial circumstances but at least, if we have to sell our prize ghuyz, then get them all on long term contracts.

    Hail Hail and Hail again
