The beating of Barca, II. This time it’s Tony.

1064

Where do we start discussing last night?  Perhaps the end of the night.  There was joy in abundance, not only inside Celtic Park, but in the streets surrounding the game and in a hundred thousand homes across the world.  This joy manifest itself into a great sense of community.  That performance brought tears, hugs, spontaneous jumping up and down, and not only from Celtic fans.  Messages have poured in from fans of other SPL clubs and beyond.

This is what great sport can do for people.

Brother Walfrid has excellent timing.  He managed to arrange our kick-off meeting to coincide with match day four of the Champions League group stage.  Those of us who attended the anniversary celebrations on Tuesday were reminded what Celtic is all about, the best team in the world were in Glasgow waiting to play, the fairy tale script was written, but could it be delivered?

It’s the details which are most impressive.  Mikael Lustig looked like he could play in any team in any league.  He was comfortable and composed throughout.  Adam Matthews, deputising for an injured former Player of the Year, played out of position flawlessly.  I watched him struggle at left back on his Celtic Park debut in a friendly against Wolves last year; it defies explanation how far he has progressed.

Please forget about Victor’s goal, it will only detract from his incredible midfield performance.  His composure, skill and assertiveness troubled Iniesta and Messi all game.  This was all the more impressive given the absence of captain, Scott Brown.

Georgios Samaras was crucial for most of the evening.  He was the one player Barca seemed afraid of, although a lack of training caught up with him before he was subbed.

I’ll not burden Tony Watt publicly with the comparison I made of him earlier in the season but he possesses an impressive array of attributes: upper body strength, pace-with-the-ball and a nose for goal.  I’m tempted to say he will continue to improve but, to what level?  Without injuries to Hooper, Lassad and Forrest it’s unlikely he would have enjoyed as much time last night.  Sometimes Fortune Favours the Celtic.

All of Europe would have been impressed with Fraser Forster last night, dubbed La Grand Muralla, the Big Wall, by a Spanish newspaper.  He will play for England, so too with Kelvin Wilson if he maintains this season’s form.

The only man with a problem today is Neil Lennon.  Tactically the two games against Barcelona have been as accomplished as any I have witnessed.  Neil needs to know how to follow that in Lisbon. I’ve no idea.

Happy Birthday Celtic!

Timabhouy..I think the answer might be that you write to the club and ask that bolster seat cushions be deployed on champions league nights..( fully upholstered in waterproof fabrics of course) … The only downside might be that you’re wee legs might dangle with the increased seat height..still could be the way forward and perhaps even sponsored thus providing added income stream for the club…whaadathink?

    * note to self- start sports seating bolster cushion business *

Generally the screen is on at league games and I don’t have a problem. The seat is good as far as I am concerned, it’s not a big deal and I get close to the field. It seem stat it’s is only Champions League where they are not allowed to put it on the screen! I am not complaining just backing up Timbhouyss point as I don’t think it is fair suggesting he might be looking at the Ipox stand when what he is saying is actually factual ! HH

Thanks for posting brogan rogan a great read.

I’m sure every celtic fan has had their own special moments in parkhead.

Everytime i approach parkhead the hairs on my neck stand up even if its just going to the superstore to get the kids strips.

Sometimes when the game goes a bit flat il look about and remember being down the front of the old celtic end with my brother. My da, granda and uncles away at the back with their cargo.

As young as we were we always felt safe as we were all a part of the celtic family.

You mixed up couple of things. I’m Polish, live in Poland. I said what I read on Russian websites. One of the rumours on Spartak fans website were from Daily Record.

We don’t have Daily, we maybe have couple of Record but they are Ford. What I hear those couple Ford Record might very old but much useful than whole 10 000 edition of fresh, new Daily Record :-)

so, we have just beaten the best team in the world and in the last two champions league games, three Celtic players in the team of the week!!! who would have thought that just a year ago

we might just have one or two decent players :-)

  9. Good evening all from the Red Sea coast,

Paul gets it right when he says the game was watched in a hundred thousand homes across the world. (Although I think he under estimates there?) I watched the game in my home here in Saudi Arabia with two friends and we shouted, jumped, hugged, danced about, cheered, bit our nails, screamed at the TV willing the ref to blow for full time. I was immensely proud to be a Celtic fan last night but very homesick at not being there!

A huge well done to all who had any involvement in the display before the game – you did the club and yourselves proud! I saw it again tonight on a report on American news channel CNN! All over the world people are talking about Celtic FC!

Every now and again we are all reminded that it really is such a privilege to be a supporter of this very special football club. We should never take it for granted and all do our bit, wherever we are in the world, to always keep it special.

1 Modern front of main stand seats which aren’t near the dugout are rubbish

2 BRT&H surpassed yersel yet again mate. I kid you not, I got that feeling when we got the corner too! Paul67 has referred to this in the past as “the Celtic spirit”. It is indefinable, inexplicable but every now and again it comes and you know it. Hearts semi in in the centenary year was when I felt it first. Watch that game again on youtube if you can, well the last minutes anyway.

3 Was at the game with my son. Parked 20 mins away south of the park just before Rutherglen. To cut a long story short, with Commmonwealth games roadworks to London road, the stewards shepherded us the other way round the velodrome and in the dark and the excitement we got lost. Pulled into, ahem, The Sportsmans bar in Rutherglen (dare say well known Sevconian hangout to some guys) to try to get a taxi to our car (wee guy tired). Pretty obvious that the custodians of said bar were not exactly Celtic minded (pub deserted, owner keen to close early). The owner conceded he was a gers man. He generously congratulated my son on his team’s win. He phoned us a taxi, stayed outside with us till the taxi came, gave my son a £1 coin, and had jovial banter with us. This lovely piece of humanity rounded off a magnificent night.

4 No way I was going to do any work today. And the sun was shining. So, nothing else for it but to get the clubs out and play paranoidbyexperience in the CQN cup. Our previous two cup games had been draws. So, I expected another close fought game. PBE edged me out 7&5.

Congratulations Jim, you combined Barcelonaesque technique with the killer finish of Mr Watt. Happy days!

Magnificent7- any sevconians at work have long since stopped talking about football, and I’m too charitable to rub their noses in it, I did hear from many people who generally have no interest in football congratulating me on last nights game.

  25. Strange things happen at Celtic Park, so it has been said.

I wonder what the chances are on the current Provincial of the Marist Brothers being a direct descendant of one of those families for whom we were founded. For indeed he is. We share a granny, who was born in 1890 odd into the Philips family in Williamson Street, a mere stone’s throw from Celtic Park, his Mum (my Auntie Anne, God rest her) was born and raised at the corner of Springfield Road and London Road, in the flat below Jimmy McGrory’s sister’s family. It’s an even shorter stone’s throw away. Brendan himself was born and spent his very early years in Grier Street, just off Crail Street, two or three stone throws away. God does work in mysterious ways.
