The Craig Whyte narrative. Kris, Leo.

1626

Best news of the day?  Kris Commons wants to be involved tomorrow against Barcelona.  I doubt Kris is anywhere near match fit, so there’s no chance of him starting on Wednesday against Astana, but a 15 minute cameo, when the Astana players’ body clocks are telling them it’s after 2am, would go down a treat.

I’ve always been a bit more ambivalent about Leonel Messi than most.  “He’s not hit the levels of Ronaldinho” is my stock comment, and then there’s the dirty little subject.  (Tax).

But his media comments ahead of tomorrow’s International Champions Cup game, “I have a Celtic jersey at home. The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them”, proves there’s substance to the man.

I’ve a Celtic jersey at home too, Leo.  A few of us here do.

Former-Rangers former vice-chairman Donald Findlay is to defend Craig Whyte is his forthcoming trial.

Whyte’s urban legend is going to be difficult to shift, but it’s not accurate.  We mocked Rangers fans a few years ago, referring to him as “Our Hero” but he never was.  He was the bag man for a very dirty job.

How he handled the SFA, Uefa, HMRC and, most crucially, the insolvency court, when he managed to secure the appointment of Duff and Phelps as Rangers administrators was crucial in the continuation of football at Ibrox.

It was Duff and Phelps who gave Newco the right to use the name “Rangers”, after which point Whyte could claim he was passing on “Rangers”.  Everyone else mocked this liquidation fantasy at the time.  Until liquidation became a reality, that is.

Whyte left Newco relatively safe in the hands of Charles Green, where it would have thrived, if it hadn’t faced a hostile and damaging takeover bid from its first week of life.

Our auction prize, donated by (the pretty fabulous) Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, closes just after 1pm today.

You can win:

2 seats in the directors’ box

Champagne reception

5 course meal in the Walfrid Suite

Fully expenses bar (pre and post-match)

Half time snacks and refreshments

Car Parking

At the game against Kilmarnock on 24 September.

Money raised from the auction will go towards building a school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. It it will be the 5th CQN school kitchen.

Our four existing kitchens feed over 2000 primary aged kids every day. School attendance has increased 30% since kitchens were built, as kids attend for their daily meal. This has an impact on health, education and life chances.

You can follow the auction on eBay here.  Thank you.

I’m off to Aberdour now for the 12th annual CQN Golf Open.  I’ll be the one holding the jackets.

See you then.

To fit an alarm system in his flat wouldn’t cost that much, I’m sure there would be a Tim who would do it for the cost of the materials, even if not, they are not that expensive, it could be fitted within a few hours.

  13. Gents, the local authorities will provide Tommy with an alarm system. My mother RIP used to wear one around her neck. Press the button and immediately someone will call and ask if you are okay. If no answer they will send help immediately.

Seems like that should be done for Tommy after he hopefully makes a full recovery.

  17. First of all, and most importantly, best wishes to Tommy Gemmell.

Only catching up now and read the last five pages.

I’m surprised at the booing of Efe story. I can’t say it didn’t happen but I was sitting in the block allocated to the Association of Irish CSCs in the upper tier behind the goal. At no stage was there any boing from this section nor did I hear booing elsewhere. Efe has been really unfortunate in that he has been associated with a lot of high profile mistakes but booing him his bang out of order. Players and team need to be supported while on the field of play. I attended five home matches last year and, apart from the evervescent Green Brigade, the majority of fans sat either silently or groaning at the poor fare on offer last season.

Dublin was Green & White yesterday – great buzz around the city, and even though we lost the match, the occasion provided us with good domestic and international exposure.

Big shout out to CQN legend CorkCelt whom I’ve wanted to meet for a long time. A true gentleman and loved sharing Celtic and other stories with him.

We had our own little CQN corner before the match and Bhoylo83 greatly reduced our average age when he arrived (although I think he thought he was coming down to a Boyzone concert:-))

  23. Almore, The pleasure was all mine, Thank You for your company and for the brilliant collection of badges which I will treasure.

Greetings indeed to Bhoylo83, a handsome young man from Derry and to Butsybhoy who bought me a pint against my will, (when we were just about to rush off to the catch the match.)

A great day & even though we lost the game, we played OK. Considering the bulk of the team were coming back from a long haul Euro game. Think back & remember all the Euro hangovers we suffered against SPFL opposition.

2 or 3 in and a bit of a clear out of lads who are OK but not quite Celtic class & we will be in good shape.

On the day that Sevco draws Peterhead at home in the League Cup, a quiz question. Since Rangers FC were liquidated, which Glasgow team has a combined draw record in the League and Scottish cups of 19 home (70.4%) and 8 away (in stark defiance of the laws of probability)?

Another one. Which Glasgow team has a draw record in the same tournaments during the same period of 10 home (52.6%) and 9 away (what you might normally expect under the laws of probability)?

Question 3. Which of the two Glasgow teams during that time has been drawn to play Hearts at Tynecastle three times in said cup competitions?

Final question. During that period, which club’s away ties comprised the footballing luminaries of Falkirk (twice), Airdrie, Forres Mechanics(!), Forfar Athletic, Dumbarton, Queen’s Park and (gasp) Dundee United (namely one – then – SPL team, four part-time and one amateur team)?

Here’s a clue. One is the Hun establishment team (in liquidation) and has been desperately in need of the cash flow of long cup runs drawing large crowds….

What a stinkin’, corrupt little foot along establishment we are at the mercy of. How they’ll suffer as we post ten in a row (and the rest).

  25. CorkCelt: ButsyBhoy and I sat together. A couple and their son and daughter sat in front of us. The children wore Barca tops but we kept winding them up that we were by far the better team. We even convinced them that the scoreboard was wrong because we scored two of the goals!

Anyway, at the end of the game I gave the children a badge each and their mam said that they would each be getting a Celtic top when they went shopping today (Sunday).

  28. Ditto Almore,

I was talking to a family from Dublin beside me. They said that they went to see Barca and became ‘Celtic Supporters.’ at the game.

The Irish support and the travelling support did Celtic proud yesterday, imo.

  29. ClogherCelt: Brilliant & thanks. I need to collect it before 16th August so will make arrangements to collect ( & deliver :-))before then.

How was it rubbing shoulders with all those celebs? If you keep this up you may end up on CBB!

  30. Great stories Almore & Clogher, what I loved yesterday was the exposure the Club received. O’Connell Street & surrounding areas were a mass of Hoops, The guys singing & dancing were high fiving young Dublin kids passing with their parents and you could see the smiles on both the Mums & kids faces as they walked by.

There was no trouble or black-guarding it was pure fun & high spirits & there was a cracking crowd at the game.

I feel certain that yesterday we recruited dozens of kids ( and maybe a few adults as well) to the Cause.

  31. Almore,

No worries, might see you in Limerick?

    I don’t know what CBB is? :))

Talk to you later in the week.
