The Craig Whyte narrative. Kris, Leo.

1626

Best news of the day?  Kris Commons wants to be involved tomorrow against Barcelona.  I doubt Kris is anywhere near match fit, so there’s no chance of him starting on Wednesday against Astana, but a 15 minute cameo, when the Astana players’ body clocks are telling them it’s after 2am, would go down a treat.

I’ve always been a bit more ambivalent about Leonel Messi than most.  “He’s not hit the levels of Ronaldinho” is my stock comment, and then there’s the dirty little subject.  (Tax).

But his media comments ahead of tomorrow’s International Champions Cup game, “I have a Celtic jersey at home. The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them”, proves there’s substance to the man.

I’ve a Celtic jersey at home too, Leo.  A few of us here do.

Former-Rangers former vice-chairman Donald Findlay is to defend Craig Whyte is his forthcoming trial.

Whyte’s urban legend is going to be difficult to shift, but it’s not accurate.  We mocked Rangers fans a few years ago, referring to him as “Our Hero” but he never was.  He was the bag man for a very dirty job.

How he handled the SFA, Uefa, HMRC and, most crucially, the insolvency court, when he managed to secure the appointment of Duff and Phelps as Rangers administrators was crucial in the continuation of football at Ibrox.

It was Duff and Phelps who gave Newco the right to use the name “Rangers”, after which point Whyte could claim he was passing on “Rangers”.  Everyone else mocked this liquidation fantasy at the time.  Until liquidation became a reality, that is.

Whyte left Newco relatively safe in the hands of Charles Green, where it would have thrived, if it hadn’t faced a hostile and damaging takeover bid from its first week of life.

Our auction prize, donated by (the pretty fabulous) Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, closes just after 1pm today.

You can win:

2 seats in the directors’ box

Champagne reception

5 course meal in the Walfrid Suite

Fully expenses bar (pre and post-match)

Half time snacks and refreshments

Car Parking

At the game against Kilmarnock on 24 September.

Money raised from the auction will go towards building a school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. It it will be the 5th CQN school kitchen.

Our four existing kitchens feed over 2000 primary aged kids every day. School attendance has increased 30% since kitchens were built, as kids attend for their daily meal. This has an impact on health, education and life chances.

You can follow the auction on eBay here.  Thank you.

I’m off to Aberdour now for the 12th annual CQN Golf Open.  I’ll be the one holding the jackets.

See you then.

” Rangers manager Mark Warburton locked his defeated stars in the dressing room for an hour after Burnley clash

    06:00, 1 AUG 2016 UPDATED 06:20, 1 AUG 2016

    BY GARY RALSTON

THE Gers were soundly beaten by the Premier League visitors and our man Gary Ralston delivers his verdict following the friendly loss.

ANDRE GRAY provided the sharp shooting as Rangers were forced to settle for some blunt talking.

The dressing room was locked for an hour after Saturday’s friendly, which was about the only time Rangers managed to keep the door bolted against the newly-promoted Premier League side

And Ibrox striker Kenny Miller has ordered his team-mates to heed the warnings from their sobering defeat to Burnley ahead of this weekend’s Premiership opener against Hamilton Accies.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton will console himself with the fact his team won’t face a side as good in the coming months.

However, a revitalised Celtic under Brendan Rodgers might just provide a similar challenge – and woe betide Rangers if they are as timid in next month’s Old Firm clash at Parkhead.

Rangers found little room to work through the middle, no space for manoeuvre down the flanks and, Joey Barton apart, couldn’t pick a precision pass of more than 30 yards over the top.

Their passing became wasteful and ragged as the Clarets exposed a soft underbelly in the centre of defence with Gray – the £6million striker Warburton nurtured at Brentford – making hay.

Miller finally emerged from the dressing room just as the Ibrox cleaners were going off shift.

And although he continued to talk up his side’s title chances, his words came with a caution. He said: “Win, lose or draw we always analyse performances. It might have been a little longer because there were a few things said that probably needed to be said.

“The manager is really big on the communication side of it among the team – we try to sort things out ourselves. We have to make sure the issues that arose against Burnley don’t crop up again.

“What was said shall remain within the dressing room although it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out the areas that need to be addressed.

“It was a disappointing result. There were positives to take from a game against very good opposition. We knew this was going to be a far greater test than anything we have faced in pre-season already.

“We stuck to our principles but a few lapses in the first half cost us. When you play against a team of that standard and you are as open as we were, they will punish you.

“They scored twice in the first half and hit the post, all from our turnovers. We can look at that and hopefully ensure it doesn’t happen again.

“It’s still pre-season at the moment. This was always going to be a good test but it’s disappointing to lose any game. That’s the nature of this football club and you

probably look back on it more harshly than you should.

“In hindsight it may not be as bad as we think. But we were definitely exposed in certain areas.

“The goals we lost were soft and easy, particularly from the turnover of our possession.

“The manager has stressed we need to be better in what we do.

    Rangers manager Mark Warburton

“However, as much as we are disappointed, we know we are in a good place. We are fit and we have had good performances, albeit against lesser opposition, in the last few matches. We have a lot of options and are far better equipped now than we were last season.”

This game provided a startling reminder of the gulf that now exists between top Scottish clubs and run-of-the-mill English outfits.

In all likelihood Burnley will spend much of this season scrambling for mid-table safety.

And yet their players looked more assured on the ball, the quality in their ranks reflected in an annual wage bill that will eclipse Rangers’ by at least six times.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton wants to add new centre back so who could he bring to Ibrox?

Warburton bought Gray from Luton two years ago but even his £600,000 fee is beyond all but Scotland’s top two clubs.

He twice spun on to passes off the shoulder of Clint Hill, winning a penalty he converted after four minutes and sliding home a second on 18 minutes. Burnley sealed victory when he ran on to a flick from Lukas Jutkiewicz eight minutes into the second half.

Miller said: “There are few clubs bigger than Rangers in terms of traditions, history and success.

“But the riches are so great in that promised land of the Premier League. The money being spent in the Championship is even greater now because they can see that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow of promotion.

“I played in the Play-Off Final for Wolves and it was tagged the £60m game. Now it’s the £160m game. The gulf in finances is only getting bigger but when Burnley come to Ibrox I still expect to beat them.”

There was a consolation of sorts when lively sub Michael O’Halloran forced Ben Mee to knock a cross into his own net, although by then the game had long since dropped to training match pace.

Miller said: “We are ready for Hamilton Accies. The game is next week – we have to be ready.

“There’s no getting away from it, no hiding place. It’s a full house and we want to start well then go up to Dundee and also win there.”

Take your pick from the plethora of mind boggling nonsense that goes under the banner of `journalism` in Scotland 0:-)

    JJ

  5. “Warburton bought Gray from Luton two years ago but even his £600,000 fee is beyond all but Scotland’s top two clubs.”

    Can Aberdeen really afford £600,000?

“Miller said: “There are few clubs bigger than Rangers in terms of traditions, history and success.”

Hello this is WEE BGFC. Watched the game yesterday. Heard the booing of efe ambrose who had a blinder yesterday. Could not be more embarrased. Hun like behaviour. Bad cràc. At the leshter game, there was a wee twit who i had a go at for booing efe on the feild at half time. Prolaby trying to impress his stupid twit pals. Bad cràc. Efe one of the best defenders we have. Playing him last man means that if he makes a mistook, it results in a goal. Play him in holding midfield and he shall do-eth unto us goodness.

  7. A though as I sipped my morning coffee.

in the modern financial climate Celtic need a team which performs better as a team than the sum of its parts.

Therefore as a support we could focus more on the aspects of a good team, defence, midfield, attack, movement, closing down, support provided for others etc and less on the individual players. At this point in BR’s reign it might be better to ask “how was the midfield’s movement?” and less about lists of midfield players who might or might not be good enough because it’s all about the team IMHO. Get the team philosophy correct and ordinary players can be superstars. Focus on individuals and you risk a team of strangers, or worse enemies.

Just now we have broken the bank for a manager who could deliver this team. Let’s give him, and all the players, time. A good team takes time.

I’m still looking for the obvious headline.. CELTIC AND the RANGERS OUTCLASSED. You can be sure it would be every on Scottish back page if Burnley had skelped us.

    Their hurt will never ease.

  9. Does the magic hat man not do interviews when his team gets pumped, I’v not seen one “Quote” from him since the got pumped on Sat.

He certainly had plenty to say all week before the game, I’m just dying to see see some of his interviews this season when they are getting humped on a regular basis, I’v a funny feeling you’ll see the real Warburton, an angry, pompous, arrogant, .rick, oh the joy :))

  10. Remember this….

The Herald group chasing the Res12 ad budget they mysteriously withdrawing despite never seeing copy.

The smear campaign after the Tribune de Geneve ad was published, trying to weaken our impact by making up a story that we submitted the ad in English rather than French? (One of the UEFA officials who we were targeting actually comes from Manchester – the city most recently scared by a visit from the hordes).

Then the story about the Guardian pulling the ad and incredibly using the same wrong language B/S.

On that day the the mischief maker in chief was a zombie who went by the name of Phantoml5.

Well his Twitter account is now gone as he has apparently been exposed as Level 5 Director Stephen Kerr. This guy made an incredible 151 tweets attacking CQN and Res12 on the day the Guardian row broke up and one or two on here sided with him!

This is also the guy making up incredible transfer stories about the Zombies.

COME ON YOU BHOYS IN GREEN

  12. The easy test for the midfield is to simply count the number of touches for each player , if you do this out load at the game it can be quite annoying for the folks around you , but it does make the point about how comfortable or otherwise we are on the ball

Barca’s average number of touches is around 1.something , we are up to around nearer 3 , particularly with Nir who slows everything down …..

If we set a simple objective support the man with the ball , then we can at least maintain 2 quick touches and then deploy a switch of play or 3rd man running ….. for all the games changed , the basics can be drummed into players with a good manager

Seeing the bhoys for the first time this Wed , so hopefully BR will have us on the front foot , pressing the opposition and moving the ball quickly , I will be counting

  14. Celtic v Barca.

Was out on Saturday so recorded match. Watched first half when I got in.

As I’d had a few drinks, I watched it again Sun morning.

That’s the best I’ve seen us defensively for a while. We continually had two lines of four that Barca found it difficult to penetrate. Our work rate was immense, in and out of possession.

Of course we lost goals but the first was very difficult to stop. Great strike.

Efe? Extremely unfortunate to see that deflect into the net. Despite that, I thought he was superb. Several times he showed incredible courage and composure. Yes I’m aware of his history, but I’m judging him on Sat evening showing and I thought he was excellent.

    Roberts is simply brilliant.

I was more encouraged by that first 45 mins than anything I’ve seen for 3 years, despite the result.

  15. I posted something about this the other day so sorry if I am being boring. in the old club/new club thing. UEFA/FIFA allow new clubs to be reincarnations of an old club. Derry City, Fiorentina, Torino being examples. This has been shown to be the case with the current Rangers being given the history on UEFA.com of the old club. only top division teams have their history on this site so this is relatively new posting and one I had been looking for to see UEFA’s position.

Are they a new club? – yes! they are a reincarnation (a zombie). FIFA have made this clear in an article and UEFA in the letter to the Res12 guys.

Will the football world treat them as the same club? – yes, that is what football does. Unfortunately!!

It’s time to accept the reality IMHO.

Exactly the way I saw it, and said that on Sat. Right after the game, funny thing was that a couple of mates and myself also agreed that, that was the best we’d ever played against Barcalona, even when we beat the 2-1, of course that does sound daft, but we are Celtic daft :))

  17. Tony

I said to my son I can’t remember seeing us ever have as much possession v Barca. Yes it’s a friendly but we were able to keep the ball better than previous encounters.

When they had it, we frustrated them for long spells.

We had every player chasing them down. Roberts was in the right full back position regularly .

    I was genuinely encouraged.

Not an easy side to contain.

Morning Bhoys a lovely morning here in Central Scotland.I wonder if there will be any new signings this week there are rumours but im not sure if they have any substance or not.It is strange that we have splashed out to get the manager but we are slow in the transfer market this may be down to Brendan being cautious about who he wants to bring in only time will tell.H.H.

  22. Looks like Sunderland and Burnley are now in for Paddy McNair. Doubt we’ll see him in the hoops.

I’m still holding out hope for Jason Denayer.

  23. Efe was not unlucky with OG. He was out of position and didn’t know where he was, where the goal was or where any Barca players were.

  24. tony

how can you take that from my post? would a Huns call themselves zombies? do I agree with it – no. but it’s what is going to happen. look up UEFA website – read Derry City. Then look at the history of that new club. there are load of died clubs out there that I didn’t know about!

To put my post in context, I was the first on here a good six or seven years ago to start posting “next season’s result Rangers 2-Peterhead 0” etc. this was when we thought they were insolvent and might get a Livingston. remember that?

But this where we are with it! The world will pretend it’s the same club and it’s nothing special for the Huns. there are hunners of examples and it is just what football does.

  25. Joe Filippis Haircut on 1st August 2016 9:37 am

I think we have been looking at British based players under Brendan’s instruction. This means we have been often turned down in favour of EPL teams

Chris Gunter, Joe Allen, Hal Robson-Kanu, Joe Flanagan, Emerson Hyndman etc.

  26. Joe Filippis Haircut on

maradominic. I agree with what you are saying about Efe but did anyone give him a shout to say he had time ? The best person to see the game and give the shout is the keeper.I believe that Craig Gordon must take his share of the blame for the poor goals we have lost recently he does not command his box and he does not often give a team mate a shout in my opinion it is wrong to put all the blame on Efe. H.H.
