The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Roy Keane and John Collins? Now that would be interesting but I think sparks would fly. Let’s support our new man and hope he has learnt from past mistakes in his managerial career.

    I know mate lol.

No harm in dreaming though a suppose.

As I said though, at least they got there.

It’s not the same without Ireland and Scotland.

Send all those Mickey Mouse countries home, like Australia and Switzerland and replace them with Ireland and Scotland.

It would be more interesting anyway I reckon.

  8. I think HL and LM would make excellent coaches – but not managers.

To be a good manager, you have to be prepared to kick-butt.

You have to be The Boss, not there to be liked but to do the job.

Keane will almost certainly take a few players from the Irish set up, who will he go for?

By the way, moaning Irish fans, upset with Keane, must understand that international football is no longer alluring to many.

Met Big Mick a few of times when he managed the Wolves(my wife’s mate used to get free tickets to their games….only way I could ever force myself to sit with their Whingeing fans…and didn’t take me too long to get home from their stadium) ……cracking guy to talk to for a Yorkshireman.

Bumped into Roy Keane once in my life………..He was sitting across from me in an Italian restaurant in Deansgate,Manchester……felt lucky to have him spend 20 seconds of his life talking to me……..Impressive guy…….serious natural aura around the guy.

Keano was right what he did to Mick in Saipan 2002……..

Talking about the boxing. When I was a youngster during the 60s, I used to spen a lot of time with my old man watching the telly – especially on a Saturday afternoon. Grandstand and whatever the ITV prog was called. We would watch the Ten Pin bowling, the Wrestling with Mick McManus and Jackie Pallo(sp), Billy Two Rivers and many others. What we especially loved was highlights of USA boxing bouts when, especially, Ruben ‘Hurricane’ Carter was featured regularly and a Japanese guy called ‘Fighting’ Harada. I loved Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali and watched mall boxing including amateur boxing when Scotland always seemed to narrowly defeat England. I changed my mind, however, later on life. During the 1980s it was. I had become a school teacher and I was invited by one of my mates to a boxing charity event at Airdrie Town Hall. The bouts involved kids from age under 10 right up to adults at a variety of weights. For the first time in my life, I actually got a close up view of the damage inflicted by the boxers on each other. Their bodies were a mass of red blotches caused by the body punches. Grown men were on their feet exhorting young children to knock hell out of each other. To be honest, I was shocked at how barbaric it was. This was a sport that I had loved but seeing it at close quarters had a profound effect on me. I have rarely watched a boxing match since.

Incidentally, that was one hell of a punch to end the bout but I don’t think I’ll watch the bout when it is shown on telly.

  17. SOAL, Roy can , and if appointed, will.

What we also want is CL group stages , a treble , a win over Barca/RM/Bayern (preferably away from home just for the added je ne sais quoi) and the added bonus of watching the tribute act crash and burn in the most amusing, protracted way possible .

    Not a lot to ask,is it ?

    Sanna (tongueincheek csc)

  18. Here’s my thoughts on the new Manager

    You will either like him

    Or you won’t like him

    You want a British one

    You want an Irish one

    Some one from Europe

Whoever it is ain’t going to please us all

Me, I want a person who can make us play

Fast football, and bring on the youths, I don’t

    Care where they come from.

I was in one the Celtic shops earlier today.

The Celtic Quality Street Gang book has been reduced from £15 to £10.

Could be a worthwhile addition at that price to all the other very good books relating to Celtic at the moment.

The Sean Fallon book is my favourite.

I was driving though Bishopbriggs last night. I saw a local wearing a Tommy Burns t shirt. It was white with green sleeves. Tommy’s face was on the bottom right hand corner. The first time I had ever seen a t shirt for Tommy apart from those the players wore on that memorable night at Tannadice.

Sydney, my son was giving out the Celtic Quick News fliers before the Aberdeen game. My son gave Gerry Dunbar one of the flyers. It was the first time I had seen Gerry for years. He was in good form and was pleased I still bought Not the View.

He didn’t get to Seville as he couldn’t get time off his work. After him being involved with those highlighting the problems the Kelly & Whites were causing and getting the fans involved more, he never got to our biggest match since Milan 1970.

Does that apply to McGeady and McCarthy too? What about all the Scottish born, Irish descended Celtic supporters who consider themselves to be Irish?

Big Mick should have decked him!

    ……………………………

You could always ask them, in a casual sort of way, how many Swiss clubs teams have ever contested the finals of Eufa European tournaments and in the same casual sort of way mention that Celtic have contested 3, winning the big one, a now defunct Scottish team actually contested 4 finals, winning a Cup secondary to the big one, Aberdeen also won the same cup beating Real Madrid in the final and Dundee United lost in the final of the EUFA Cup.

“Mickey Mouse”? Tell the Swiss to stick to making cuckoo clocks.
