The curious significant of 1 June

1642

There’s something I’ve never been able to figure out for the last nine years.  When Gordon Strachan was announced as Celtic manager, on 1st June 2014, he apologised to the media for bumping their calls the previous week, as he was due to takeover on that date, and the announcement was embargoed until then.

No idea why the news was embargoed, but it was.  Tomorrow’s the 1st June.  If the same rules hold true now as when Gordon Strachan was appointed, there was little chance of an appointment in late May.

If you’re not going to the CQN 10-in-a-row Charity Golf day on 4 July the Sean’s Trust Charity Dinner is on the same night at the Fullarton Suits, Glasgow.  Sean’s Trust is run by the late St John Doyle’s partner, Linda.  If you’d like to attend let Lennybhoy know, lennybhoycfc@gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to attend the CQN Question and Answer evening at the Manor Club, Wimbledon, on 21 June, with a confirmed line-up of Lisbon Lion, John Hughes, and our own Brogan Rogan and Auldheid, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Aye you can’t accuse the Kangaroos of being Mickey Mouse. Swiss fitbaw got a lot better at national level since I first moved here, their top boys all play in good leagues, Italy Spain England Germany, the league here is average but technically better than Scotland.

The idea from the different nationalities here that Scottish football is anything other than hoofball is very difficult to change, some folk here were and are impressed by Celtic as a club but our national game is a bit of a joke and that’s before I talk to any Germans!

I came here with a big Glasgow gob on me and had to eat a lot of humble pie when Basel knocked us out of the CL and to be fair to Basel they have continually developed good players and sold them on, Yakin was also rated as a coach but it seems he needs to control everything and Basel didn’t want to let him do that, they’re a selling club they have to be…

  2. brnobhoy, Good post, I believe we will win the SPL and will be unlikely to reach last 16 of Champions League regardless of the Manager. Like yourself I want a Manager who has the team playing high tempo attractive football and who will develop our own young prospects. Is Keane the man to do it? I just don’t know. Obviously being a fellow Cork man I wish him well and it will be a thrill to see a man from my own City leading Celtic. However my overiding concern is for Celtic to do well. I must admit I’m very nervous about the prospective appointment but once he is in the job, he will have my total support.

    That’s my standard answer!

At a national level they left us behind..

Their players developed the mentality to play in better leagues being the difference I see..

    Hahahaha.

Yer right pal.The boxing is a hard old game.I go frequently to local amateur shows here in Derry and right close to the ring you see the intensity of the punches and you flinch yourself when shots land right on the button. The use of headguards is a definite improvement regarding safety.Don’t go as far as to say barbaric though, certainly at amateur level.

    I love it though.

  7. I’ve met them both too ryecatcher, I reckon whichever of them landed the first punch would have the clear advantage.

Estate agent mate has just sold a property to Roy Keane in Glasgow a big place bringing the whole family. Lots of space for the kids and the dogs to run. A gym. Sauna etc. A real steal. Mate said it used to be called Murray Park

    Just having a laugh,pal.

If the truth be told,I am already having nightmares about Oz in the mundial.

We have a very young squad.Even if Schwartzer (sp ?) were included,I might feel more optimistic. He may be Swiss.:-)

If the truth be told,we have a dream run to the Finals.

    Japan,S.Korea are our main opposition.

Very much hope that wee Gordon hangs around for a few years. We may be able to muster a team of contenders.

    We live in hope.

Almost everybody seems to think that Roy Keane is a fait acomple (sp).

May or may not be the case.

If Roy is appointed, it seems to this bhoy that it is a statement of ambition by DD. possibly misplaced ambition.

I fail to see how Roy Keane meets the Celtic spec of a manger. Is there a change of approach from DD.

If he is our new manager, I’ll support him all the way, but it is a really strange one.

Didn’t see a reply yesterday but I wondered about DD being quoted by all and sundry in MSM as majority shareholder. I thought not.

Very similar early experiences of watching boxing.

Now feel exactly as you do.

Rugby (thugby) is another ” sport” I now have mixed feelings about.

    ………………………………….

Yes. I would also agree with you regarding rugby. The All Blacks tackle on Brian O’Driscoll, the deliberate collapsing of scrums causing numerous spinal injuries and the out and out thuggery. I remember Paul O’Connell wrestling on the ground at the side of the pitch with a Welshman and punching him about 10 times on the face without reply. We have seen various other atrocities on SKY sports. It is a sport that really needs to sort itself out. My son played for St. Aloysius at rugby. Even at that level, I saw one or two incidents that did not enhance the reputation of the sport. I got a real fright one Saturday morning when a helicopter descended on the playing fields at Millerston to airlift a 14 year old form another school with a suspected spinal injury. The boy was telling medical staff that he could not feel his toes.

I just think that there are some sports where children have to be given very close supervision – if they are allowed to take part int the sport at all.

I watched Scotland the other night for the first time in years, I thought they were decent, I like wee Gordon I hope he gets to go to a major tournament with his team, he’s a fitbaw man, I grew up watching Scotland in the 70’s I just thought we always went to the World Cup.

Strachan might just the man to sort them out.

ryecatcher – I see you avoided answering the two questions I asked following your offensive comment about Big Mick not being Irish.

Well, it will be offensive to some. Not me, as I’m Scottish with no existing family connections in Ireland, but it will certainly irk those who are first generation Irish in the UK.

    Somehow I doubt you care!

Good night Timdom. I hope the RK stuff is a smokescreen for a more imaginative appointment.

I loved watching Jackie and Mick. George Kidd too. As I said I also loved the boxing

To be honest, the programme I attended at Airdrie Town Hall did not involve the wearing of head guards. It was the massive red blotches and bruises on the bodies of the boxers – especially the kids – that put me off. The TV didn’t properly show that. As you say it was during our NIAR years and I watched with my dad (RIP) which gave me the fond memories.
