The cycle of sacking managers

654

We spoke about Stale Solbakken here as an option during one of our recent management vacancies.  At the time he was manager of Copenhagen, who were playing monopoly with the Danish game and had become the first regular Champions League competitor from that country.  Yesterday he was sacked as manager of Wolves, who are 18th in the second tier of English football.

Mick McCarthy led Wolves to promotion into the FA Premier League in 2009 but was sacked in February after slipping into a relegation place.  The club were relegated and Solbakken was appointed in July.  Solbakken, still only 44, won five leagues in six seasons at Copenhagen and competed well with a tiny budget in the Champions League.  He is a good manager but his failure at Wolves presents more evidence that the fabled guru football manager doesn’t exist.

Managers are cogs in a management system which involves players, scouts, technical experts, coaches, youth development staff and administrators.  If a club gets all the other components right, as Copenhagen unquestionably did, the guy with ultimate control over team matters will appear to over-perform.   Conversely, if you have a genuinely talented manager but he doesn’t work with a crucial part of the football structure, progress will stall.  Martin O’Neill taught us more about football tactics in his first season than we had learned in the previous 20 years, but he was not known to sign players he hadn’t identified when playing against his teams.

Wolves chance of recruiting a manager as good as Mick McCarthy is slight.  They could do worse than look at how Celtic stemmed the flow of failure by taking a guy who was already working with the scouts, coaches, technical experts, youth development staff and administrators.  Don’t look for a guru, get the system right and find someone who will work within it.

  1. See Davie Weir in the Scotsman hinting that Walter should get the Scotland job.

He also admits that he is not yet ready for the gig.

    You are too modest Davie.

  3. Morning Celts, first day back at work after 23 days off….. It’s gonnae be a sore yin. I’m already in a good mood though as I was dreaming when the alarm went off and I remember vividly the last part, I was with my last boss who retired just before Christmas and I was saying to him that I’d take him to the European cup final the next time we get there ( his teams Wigan ), I said and there’s a bloody decent chance it’s going to be soon……..

Sadly the alarm went off then, which brings me to my point. Why would any of our best players want to leave the club to go to the likes of a Newcastle or Sunderland right now? We’re in all competitions still, that’s ALL.

Don’t blame the media for making up stories, it’s what they do and why their industry is going down the swannee.

  4. I don’t believe our club are colluding with anyone to rid us of any section of support !

That is complete and utter nonsense!!

The more we roll this crap out the more others start to believe it !

I would go as far as saying the the orcs through media and through disguise have infiltrated our online groups and are working away tirelessly to disrupt our success and bring disharmony amount our support.

    Get a grip !

Neil placing the SPL trophy in front of that section of support that some lead us to believe are being sanctioned against says it all to me !

  10. Morning,

Read an interesting article from GB Forum. It seems Celtic’s covert war against the GB intensifying once again.

Lose the GB and you lose most of the support, who wants to sit in a concrete morgue every second week…

  11. Is this it?

“It seems to be a strange time around Celtic Park fan wise.

At our game V motherwell on the 2nd of January the group were refused entry for a few banners which poked a bit of fun at the over reaction to the ‘events’ in Dundee. The banners had no swearing on them,or names. Nothing controversial. Just some banners standing up for the Celtic support. Something NO ONE AT ALL at Celtic was doing. Not our manager, supporters association. Not even our our own chief exec.

Peter Lawwells reaction to the Dundee game was the strangest i would say. With in hours of the game finishing,he had decided publicly that the support were guilty of the claims made by the Dundee chairman. Laughable claims of ‘Rioting’ and ‘urinating where they stood’ Lies and accusations our club should have at the very very least investigated before giving any sound bites to a baying press ,infatuated with the Celtic supports ID. Yes there was a few altercations at the game. But everyone knows nothing was on a scale of that said by those looking to take a kick at the away support.Lies like running battles were laughable.

Its amazing in this day and age of cameras everywhere and mobile phones capturing almost all that goes on.Not 1 video of rioting, running battles or fans pissing where they stand has emerged from Dundee. Not even from the home support,so its not as if the Celtic support are hiding what happened.

Its a stitch up on par with the ‘Shame game’ when the full nation rounded on the Celtic support.

Peter Lawwell should have held his own enquiry and spoke to fan groups and got the true story as to what really happened at Dens. He didn’t,He hung the support out to dry and along with the media and police not the for the 1st time attacked sections of the Celtic support.

Dundee claimed 1 in every 42 people were ejected. Mind boggling. Every one knows 4 Celtic fans were arrested ,if there was 70 people ejected there is not a chance in hell Tayside Police force would only have arrested 4 of them. This is a police force who have the reputation of being the most aggressive and ruthless force not just in Scotland but all of the Uk. Everyone knows at football when a fan is being ejected can cause a bit of a rammy, some times it doesnt, but there hasnt been 1 story online or said in person about mass ejections and all the hassle that would undoubtedly cause. Thats because it was lies. Lies by the Dundee chairman that Celtic sided with and backed.

Why would Peter Lawwell be so keen to attack the away support like he did? Why was the manager also asked AGAIN to sink the boot in to the away support?

Some of the latest news were hearing is that Celtic with some trusted lackies have been feeding Phil Whyte the blogger some info to try and tarnish the groups name. To try and ramp up pressure on the Political singing and the pyro the group does. All very underhand for a club chief exec,Though unsurprising due to many sleekit actions Peter Lawwell has been up to over the years.

When the Green Brigade displayed its first poppy banners a few season back he immediately was on the phone to all the supporter groups demanding they condemn the groups and its actions. He was moving in for the kill and wanted the group banned from Celtic Park for exploiting its freedom of speach.Thankfully fans -even those not in agreement with the banner sided with the Green Brigade rights to do such actions.

At the Motherwell game David Brannan using CCTV outside the turnstiles at 111 viewed our message banners for the Motherwell game and refused them entry. He refused to enter dialogue on the issue also.

So why would Celtic refuse banners which were showing support for the clubs support?

Why would Peter Lawwell in a time scale unfit to have had a proper investigation go along with reports the support rioted, urinated where the stood and had 70 ejections?

Over the last few months Celtic and Celtic officials has been acting very strange. There are incidents that have came back to us where Celtic has asked some supporters to condemn The Green Brigade publicly for a host of things. There is strong accusations Celtic asked the ‘Disabled Supporters Association’ to write the statement thy made public a few weeks back on flares.

Flares have been happening for 7 years now at Celtic games and this statement was released at a time when Peter Lawwell has been going hammer and tongs to get the group to ditch its pyro. Coincidence? I think not.

Just before christmas there was lots of talk of Celtics security chiefs being in cahoots with the Police to target the Green Brigade and its members as much as they could. They were caught bang to rights on this when 1 of our members who had to contact Celtic the very day he bought a new phone and so had a new mobile number was then contacted hours later by the police on this brand new number.

As always there is a million and 1 things going on inside Celtic Park, that sadly not all can ever be made publicly as some things are asked not to be said as it exposes the source.

It seems Celtic are hell bent on attacking the Green Brigade and the away support and will use anyone and everyone in this campaign to do so.”

    JJ

  12. Very interesting JJ. I have never seen the green brigade in real life,

But my views on PL and his spin and his use of the web media is well known

    He likes to control all

  13. Morning all!

Just experienced a truly LOL moment – ‘Elbows’ on SSN saying how he wants to become a manager… and…how he has been taking tips from the fat, useless, pie-munching sleekit whisperer!

    Hilarious!

    Comedy gold!

    HH!!

  14. Vmhan,

I could not agree with you more. People with their own agenda are trying, as ever, to undermine us.

I heard a story yesterday which utterly sickened me about the trouble at Dundee and about what happened subsequently. I have no reason to doubt the story and if true, those involved are not true Celtic supporters. No real Celtic supporter could begin to defend their despicable behaviour. If Peter Lawwell is trying to root them out, he has my respect. Our manager has already told them not to come back.

  15. The GB add great atmosphere to games and I think generally they are a positive.

I don’t like the firework for a few of reasons.

First of all they are not allowed in grounds and no amount of ” they add to the atmosphere” rubbish will wash. They are banned for a reason.

Secondly at Dens Park I didn’t witness any “pyro”. All I saw was a bunch of bangers letting off a bunch of bangers.

The folk who let the fireworks off at Dens were probably not in GB as the ones I saw were very young and very drunk.

The issues at Dens were made much worse by some really drunk fans being allowed in to the ground. They should have been refused entry.

  16. Things you won’t find in the Scottish MSM.

    Where is Carlos?

Nobody in Santander knows where Sevco loan player Carlos Bocanegra is or when he intends to return to Cantabria, or if he ever will return.

Local newspaper el Diario Montañés tried all weekend to find out if he was back and in the Rácing squad for their match against Ponferradina, but the club’s communications team just passed the buck to the club’s sporting director, Emilio de Dios, but he refused to return any calls. Bocanegra was not in town for the game.

The newspaper says he arrived back after Christmas, took part in training sessions on December 30 and 31 but is now in Los Angeles. Not only that, it says he called his wife from Los Angeles and told her to get on the first plane she could to get to LA. Furthermore, it says that Rácing have played Bocanegra for the first part of the season without a work permit and that he is in California to try to sort out all the paperwork. He’s been in Spain on a tourist visa and has not had the necessary documentation to to work legally.

El Diario Montañés puts the blame for this on the player’s home club, Sevco, which has failed to send to Santander the paperwork for his loan deal.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

  17. has someone broken the blog…….or is everyone just busy at work trawlling through emails??

  18. Morning all. The transfer window rumbles on, yet surprisingly we have not sold anyone yet. The media must be concerned that its campaign to get rid of Hooper, Kayal, Forster et al has not proves successful so far.

Rami Gershon should complete his move today. One in – any more to come I wonder?

Thanks very much for sharing that M8.

My conclusion……All sections of the Celtic support – GB/SA/Celtic trust/Individual’s etc..

all get together under the one umbrella and, ride-out the rest of this season keeping the collective powders dry.

It would be very difficult to arrange times for meetings that would suit every Celtic supporter so….I would suggest, to cut a long story short…not one penny/thine dime to be forwarded for next seasons SB’s until….

The bored – PL – DD – PLC – are no more !!!

The club has to be restructured and run by Celtic supporters – not financial sharks.

PL/DD and any of the current hierarchy will tell you that their – devout Celtic supporters ? NO – they’re not !

You all on here can fire all the abuse at me that you like for what I’ve just recommended ( I don’t go any more because the bored have been doing everything with YOUR money that they said they would when, they brought in WGS and I decided – not with my hard earned cash yer not ) but, I would only be a decoy.

The Celt’s For Change Group of 1994 – If fans would have seen their light sooner, the Kelly’s & White’s would have been sacked a few years before they were and, there would have been no hun 9 iar !!! Think about that !

Too cut a long story short…Sack The Bored THIS summer or, Celtic FC will NEVER be run – By the Fans – For the Fans – BECAUSE of the Fans !!!

The longer the debates continue….the greater the chance of serious disorder between the bored and the fans !!! imo

Far better to lance the bored before it gets that far. imo

Sometimes – DRAMATIC ACTION’S – have to be the order of the day.

THAT day is when the final whistle blows on this season.

It’s YOUR Club ! Not PL’s/DD’s or any of the rest of the faceless wonders who constitute – The Celtic Bored.

Please do what has to be done and get the snakes out of Celtic’s bed.

    Rant over.

    Off oot

    laters…

  20. Bored of board haters who cant spell who don’t put a penny into the club telling all and sundry what to do.

Go and tell Daily Record forums what role Hugh Keevins should have in your fantasy.

Disgraceful treatment of the Green Brigade and a message to Lawell and the board-

We will believe and stand by the GB before you or anybody else.

Shameful treatment of football fans,Celtic fans.
