The Hooiveld – Samaras point

718

Our best wishes to Jos Hooiveld, 28, who has managed to resurrect his career at Southampton 23 months after completing an unsuccessful move to Celtic.  Southampton, newly promoted to the English Championship this season, sit top of the division, with Jos a key part of their success.

The big defender clearly has more than he was able to demonstrate during his time here, despite Celtic clearly being in need of a strong central defender.  Last night, after Georgios Samaras was send forward to lead the line, it occurred to my just how unsuitable he is as part of a front two.  All that gutsy energy, running and yes – bravery – both in terms of diving into challenges and always being available for a team mate, no matter what feedback he is receiving from the stands, is hidden when he’s up front.

Give him space to gallop into on the wing or let him find his own Southampton.

Posted this last night but at the end of a thread, any suggestions appreciated:

    Q. I am in central London, Buckingham Palace Rd to be precise, the night of the Udinese game. Any London Tims point me to the best pub to watch the game that night. I would prefer not to travel too far as I have an early appointment in SE1 the next morning.

Mate, take the Victoria Line up to Euston, then Northern Line one stop to Mornington Crescent station, cross the road onto Mornington Street for the Sheephaven Bay, home of the Camden Bhoys CSC. A wee bit further than the MoG but worth it.

A few millions in the stawn last night. Billy & Rod. Maybe a wee buy-out on the way?? Bye bye Peter bye bye!!!

  3. up_over_ goal- I thought things in the ole Sieve were bad without throwing in the possibility of existensial crises being behind our inability to keep the ball out of the ole onion bag.

I don’t think many would dispute Sammi’s ability as we have seen it in flashes ,unfortunately Sammi has struggled too many times with the buttons of his dirty raincoat

Credit to him though in the last few games he has upped his game .

    hail hail

  9. As a fully paid up member of the Sammi CSC, I hope we continue to employ him out on the wing, running at defences. He’s in his element when his ole locks are flowing. Brings back fond memories of that other often exasperating but always brave Celtic forward: the original, the one and only, John Hughes.

Hooiveld turns out to be no bad at all but ………..no one at Parkhead could see it. Maybe if Lennon didn’t change the team every 30 seconds, he might have.

Samaras ? Bit better – certainly no worse – than the other excuses for forwards we have.

Stokes ? Useless, just gets lucky sometimes.

Hooper ? Got talent but struggles on poor, poor service.

Forrest Gateau ? Was he playing ?

Lennon’s summing up of the game ? What game was he watching? We were lucky to get Nil.

Our chances V Udinese ? Zero.

No doubt all the above makes me a hun. Sad.

Wouldn’t say it makes you a hun, however it doesn’t make you sound like a Neil Lennon or Celtic supporter either.

Difficult questions being asked of them ,no use them looking at the old rule book for answers as this is new territory for them .

The SFA should look at their own rule book.

The rulebook states in black and Whyte that until 5 years after being disqualified that he is not a fit and proper owner.

Hope your first day back at work went well. Can’t help thinking you picked a bad time of year for gardening leave.

You should plan these things better-my mate tends to tell his latest boss where to stick it after the plethora of SPRING BANK HOLIDAYS,having stocked up on special deals in the offie.

This is not necessarily a recommendation, but he usually does it prior to a big football finals event…..

  20. Fergus – doesn’t make you an Orc but I for one would disagree with your opinion on the players you name.

Stokes – lucky sometimes? On average 20 times a season it would seem. He has also improved his fitness and work rate and all round game in my opinion

Hooper – frustrates me sometimes. Rather have stokes at the moment but again, has a record of scoring goals – which is his job.

Forrest – skinned his full back a few times in the first half. They gave him a bot more attention after that.

Lucky to get nil? First have we could have had two or three with the right pass or a bit of luck. Ki also forced a great save in the second half.

Me and Lenny were obviously watching a different game from you as you say. The one I watched was a La Liga side with a talented squad against an SPL side who less than a month ago were struggling for any kind of result or performance – and although in the second half we huffed and puffed a bit you could not say that Madrid were a class apart.

You might want to consider the average age of our team last night too.

That’s the beauty of fitba buddy. we all watch a different game some times. and we should enjoy the debate about it.

    Awra best

That is BIG news. Interesting indeed.

What is the punishment if they find he is not fit and proper? By that I mean how do they punish the rest of the league to allow Rangers to get away with it?

  22. The Battered Bunnet on

    By Chris McLaughlin

    BBC Scotland

The Scottish Football Association is investigating Craig Whyte after the Rangers owner admitted that he had been disqualified as a company director.

And if it is not satisfied that Whyte falls into its fit and proper person guidelines, it will take action against the Ibrox club.

Rangers released a statement to the stock exchange on Wednesday confirming Whyte’s seven-year disqualification.

The SFA has been in dialogue with Rangers asking for details.

“The Scottish FA has noted the Rangers FC statement to the stock exchange regarding the club’s owner Craig Whyte,” said chief executive Stewart Regan.

“We have been in dialogue with the club on this matter and in light of today’s developments have requested clarification by return.

“We await disclosure of key information before we can make any further comment.”

The governing body’s articles of association state that office bearers with their football clubs must meet their board’s fit and proper criteria.

The SFA board reserves the right to make such a judgement “after due consideration of all relevant facts”.

Article 10.2 (g) makes reference to a person who has “been disqualified as a director pursuant to the Company Directors’ Disqualification Act 1986, within the previous five years”, with the caveat that the list is “acknowledged to be illustrative and not exhaustive”.

White was disqualified from 2000 to 2007.

  23. BMCUW- I’ve retired mate, will try a business venture early in new year, enjoying time off just now.The Helium Factory interviewed me for a job, told them to shove it as i wasnt letting anyone talk to me in that tone of voice.:<

  24. BC now running story SFA investigating if Whyte is a fit and proper ‘office bearer’ under their articles of association.

Maybe he will sue them… :)

  25. Cant believe the rush to praise big Sammy on here,,,fair do’s he has worked his tail off the last few games and even scored a goal,,,but is that enough to justify the over the top praise he has received over the last few games???

I mean there are some on here labeling him world class for God’s sake,,,,why because he never hides and shows bravery,,,my god there are plenty in the stands who will gladly show these very same qualities, and for a lot less than Sammi is being paid,,,,does not mean they should be playing professional first team football for Celtic though does it!!!

I like Sammi and i dont want this to sound like a personal attack on him because it is not,,,,but i have seen these false dawns before from the big man, which are inevitably greeted with the ” i told you so ” brigade proclaiming him to be world class, and if you dont agree with them then you know Feck all about the game,,blah blah blah!!

So Sammi if you go on a run of 5-10 games where you score goals, link up with your team mates, continue to burst a gut( which you have been doing ),,,then i will put my hand up and take back everything i have just said,,,,,,,,,its entirely up to you big man the balls in your court,,, please, prove me wrong!!!

    Hail hail

  26. The Honest Mistake on

The SFA don’t need any extra information. The announcement rangers made to the Stock exchange last night is enough information.

They are delaying in the hope that this goes away.

  27. Not sure what Sammi has done differently recently but it appears he may have turned the corner in the eyes of a few. My thoughts for what Sammi offers:

    Total commitment to Celtic

    Never hides

    Tons of skill

Vision – many times way ahead of his team mates

    Speed

The downside of course is lack of goals but is he a natural striker? Clearly not given his goal scoring record.

Anyway, very good to see a more positive response re Sammi.

Thanks for your input Ghuys, much appreciated. I am in London early on that day so I will do a mini pub crawl of your suggestions and plump for the one that serves the best Guinness.

I was going to pop up to Buck House to watch the game with Lizzie and her Celtic supporting grandson Wills but apparently she doesn’t have Guinness on draught, shame ;-)
