The Hooiveld – Samaras point

718

Our best wishes to Jos Hooiveld, 28, who has managed to resurrect his career at Southampton 23 months after completing an unsuccessful move to Celtic.  Southampton, newly promoted to the English Championship this season, sit top of the division, with Jos a key part of their success.

The big defender clearly has more than he was able to demonstrate during his time here, despite Celtic clearly being in need of a strong central defender.  Last night, after Georgios Samaras was send forward to lead the line, it occurred to my just how unsuitable he is as part of a front two.  All that gutsy energy, running and yes – bravery – both in terms of diving into challenges and always being available for a team mate, no matter what feedback he is receiving from the stands, is hidden when he’s up front.

Give him space to gallop into on the wing or let him find his own Southampton.

    On Craig Whyte:

To me this all seems fairly straightforward. The SFA are carrying out an invesitagion, which should give you a fair idea of how they view the “five year rule.” It’s clear they believe it commences from the moment a ban ends, or else why are they even bothering to ask for details? All the details are contained in both Rangers statement and in the BBC documentary. It is clear what the SFA wants is an explanation of what it was not disclosed before now, and when Rangers give them that answer they will proceed with some form of action against them.

It is unclear what kind of action that will be. There doesn’t seem to be anything in the rules outlining punishments, but something important to consider here is that this is not a footballing issue but a licensing issue, with repercussions for the SFA that go far beyond the football field. UEFA also have a stake in this one, as they ultimately have their own licensing responsibilities, and they could not be idle in even the SFA refused to do something.

Anyone who thinks this will simply go away, think again. It’s clear the SFA have either been grossly derelict in their duty to investigate or they are complicit in an effort to cover up the facts. In either case, they need to act if they are to save themselves from serious questions and big trouble. The other possibility is that they were duped, that Rangers and/or Whyte lied to them in their submissions before being granted a license, which means this can of worms aint even half open yet.

This does not end well for Rangers, or Whyte, or the SFA, in any of those cases. This one, people, is not going away and it presents a hundred more questions, such as if Rangers lied about this, were they completely honest in their other licensing submissions? If the SFA did not ask too much, or dig too deep, in this case, or ignored what they found, how do we know they did their due diligence in other matters, like Rangers eligibility for a UEFA license?

No, this is only the start of this story. It’s going to expand, and then explode.

Aye, see your point, was thinking that, defender doing well for a top team in the Championship would cost us £3-4m, but given the dead wood we have anything over £1m Id say was good business.

  4. What`a all this about the SFA and Rangers ” Not Proven”? According to the lead item on BBC Scotland at 6.30, the SFA were looking into Whyte`s directorial disqualification/fit and proper and, if found guilty, they will take sanctions against the Club.

Were did the Not Proven thingy come from?

Hail hail gents , haven’t been on in a while , lurking but not had time to engage in conversation , but need your help. Myself and the missus have season tickets and gave them to our sons ( who are Celtic daft and go to lots of games ) for the orcs game on 28th but two of their Celtic supporting friends friends wanted to go after listening to us talk about atmosphere against the Huns game. Anyway they told me too late to get the extra tickets deal for season books, I told them I’d get tickets, which I did , they then booked their fights but I was let down with tickets. They are very well mannered respectable youg men and would not embarrass any one, so pleeeeeeeeeeese can anyone help me out with any spare tickets for sale. I would be more than glad to reciprocate the favour with our tickets for other games . Free of charge. Thanks in advance.

I would love to think that the licensing issue would bring about that which we would wish to see however: remember the SFA banning wor boss for fourteenty years of some such nonsense, only to be told: haud on, your rules actually state that he’ll serve both punishments concurrently?

Such loose wording has worked in our favour before and despite the SFA, erm, ‘demanding’ answers, I’m sure the answer they’ll receive from some lawyer (presumably on a no-win-no-fee basis) will be to the tune of: he was disqualified 11 years ago and as such has nothing more to add.

Where it goes from there will depend much on the SFA’s willingness to see who blinks first.

Can you clarify the period of whyte’s ban, did it last for seven years from when it was imposed in 2000?

Can you clarify also does the five year exclusion prevent him in this case from holding a post until 2012, which is five years after the ban expired?

  20. Evening All,

    Neil talking about Beram……

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has hailed the courage of Beram Kayal following criticism of the midfielder’s role in their defeat by Atletico Madrid.

The Israeli appeared to duck to avoid the strike from Arda Turan that gave the Spaniards a 1-0 victory.

But Lennon said: “Beram doesn’t duck out of anything. To accuse him of that is ridiculous.

“Beram is one of the bravest players I’ve seen in quite a while and he puts his body on the line for the team.”

Lennon said after the Europa League match in Glasgow that he thought Kayal had misjudged the flight of Turan’s fierce strike.

And he repeated that assertion, adding that Kayal was one of the best players on show during the game.

Kayal has dominated the back pages in consecutive days, with the “ducking” incident, following his claims that Celtic were the best team in Scotland.

But Lennon had no problem with the player for backing his team-mates and believes the reporting may have been skewed.

I’m not going to berate Beram for doing an interview and then for people to put their own slant on it

“The headlines are par for the course,” explained Lennon.

“I’m quite comfortable with Beram. I don’t think he’s the kind of lad to come out and boast about things or taunt people.

“He’s a very well grounded individual. I think some people have added a little salt and vinegar on the story.

“I’m not too sure he said all of that. I think what he meant was that he believes we have got good players and a good team.

“But we have to go out and prove that.

“I’m not going to berate Beram for doing an interview and then for people to put their own slant on it.”

  21. No doubt the SFA will find Whytey to be a fit and proper person after giving him 20 mins on a treadmill and determining that he is made from flesh and blood. Criteria satisfied. Nothing to see here now move on.

  22. The Token Tim 19:26:

Samaras is of the footballing academy that precludes him from putting his laces through the ball. I actually agree with the teaching of his footballing academy. Whilst I would not say he is world class, I think he is a very skilful player and believe in the way he tries to pass the ball into the net…alas he does not have a higher percentage strike rate. I love watching players, whether it be Samaras or not pass a ball into a net, it just looks classy and natural.

From somebody who has never played the game I just love watching fast, flowing one touch football with a pass into the net most of the time. Perhaps I live in the wrong country…

When I watched Samaras score against Kilmarnock on his debut, I thought now there is a footballer.

    Lennybhoy and others:

As Brogan Rogan has pointed out, the SFA regulations relate to their legal responsibilities as a licensing body. Those are non-negotiable.

Whyte’s ban began in 2000. Paul McConville has already stated, clearly, that a seven year directorial ban does not arise out of a mere technical error or minor matter; there was an egregious, and deliberate, wrong doing on Whyte’s part in the case for which he recieved that ban. There is also much evidence which suggests he continued to act as a director of various companies in spite of it, but those allegations are part of what he is suing the BBC over.

What is not in dispute is that the ban ended in 2007 and the SFA regulations say you cannot have served a ban in the last five years if you are to pass the fit and proper person test, which they, as a licensing authority, are obliged to apply here.

The debate over whether that five year term applies to the moment the ban started or when it ended is ludicrous. The SFA themselves are making it clear it is a reference to when the ban ended. How can it not be? That ban ran from 2000 – 2007. In the event the rule refers to the start of a ban consider this; had Whyte bought Rangers in 2006, he would have PASSED the fit and proper person test despite STILL BEING BANNED …. To my eyes, this is simple and straightforward. Whyte should not have been able to play a role at Rangers until next year at the very earliest, and only then after a robust SFA investigation into his background and business dealings.

The SFA have serious questions to answer here. Did someone fall asleep at the wheel? if they did, how do we know this is the only time? Did they deliberately look the other way? Only a fool would believe it was the first time, or only time, if that is the case? Or were they lied to, and duped themselves? Only a fool, in that case, would not be studying EVERY submission Rangers has made on a licensing issue in the last ten years if they lied about this.

There is no easy way out of it.

To my eyes, this is simple and straightforward.”

    That is unarguable.

Having said that I do not doubt that lawyers and Ranger’s apologists will argue otherwise. It’s what they do. Divert the discourse but it seems very straight-forward to me.

Consider a similar hypothetical with a taxi company that won’t hire drivers for 5 years after they are banned. Would a driver banned for life get a job with them after 5-years?
