The language of defeat, crowd-sourced media management

1075

Speaking at the weekend, Kenny McDowell looked ahead to the cup semi-final saying “We aren’t going into the game fearing a big defeat.  If anything we are going into the game knowing we’ll have to be on our guard and wary of that, but we are not going into it fearing of losing by a big score-line”.

Admitting that he’s wary about the prospect of a big defeat is the last thing you want your manager to say publicly as you prepare for a cup tie.  It conditions everyone to the prospect of defeat.

From Ronny, it’s all positive: “It’s going to be fun.

“It’s good that this is a big game, so we won’t be underestimating the opponent.

“We are in a good position, we can win everything and that motivates.”

Big games, big results, are often won in the head before a team takes to the field.  You win because you know you’re going to win, because you know you can rely on your team-mates.  You know that if you do your job correctly, there is nothing the opposition can do, short of elbowing you in the face and hope you retaliate.

No game of football is easy and Ronny and the players will know they will have to work for anything they get on Sunday, but the preparatory work has been done.  The players are fit, rested and can’t wait for Sunday.

On a side note, I can’t believe how thoroughly the New Club advert has penetrated media coverage this week.  On top of Motivator McDowell, can you imagine ‘ex-players’, pundits and fans having to explain their existence and relevance in the run up to a semi-final?  This wasn’t a crowd-source advert, it was crowd-sourced media management, which ran rings around the best paid PRs in the business.

Let me know (celticquicknews@gmail.com) if you want a ticket to CQN 11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March – Cup Final weekend, as it happens, or you can buy a ticket at the bottom of this page.  I’m in the mood now.

Of all the money that ere I had, I spent it in good company.

And of all the harm that ere I’ve done, alas was done to none but me.

And all I’ve done for want of wit, to memory now I cannot recall.

So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Of all the comrades that ere I had, they’re sorry for my going away,

And of all the sweethearts that ere I had , they wish me one more day to stay,

But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise while you should not,

I will gently rise and I’ll softly call, “Goodnight and joy be with you all!”

Oh, if I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit awhile

There is a fair maid in this town that sorely has my heart beguiled

Her rosey cheeks and ruby lips, she alone has my heart in thrall.

So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

  3. For the 2nd day in a row I’m up with the lark. Mental torment thinking about this goddam game in Sunday.

New club but same verminous support.

Please Celtic , please nail this MIB on Sunday, even if only to return my sleep pattern to normality.

  4. I’m not worried about playing new rangers;

    It’s their 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th man who concern me. ….

  5. What could be interesting is of the mib are on message.

A win for new rangers will do nothing but strengthen MA in the eyes of the support. A loss weakens him further. What would rangers minded agitators want for a result to further undermine MA

You were right first time , the MIB is the one who will influence the outcome of this game against the NEW club .

  7. Good morning friends and a Big Happy Friday from East Kilbride. It’s a clear skied, very frosty morning here on top of a blanket of now hard snow. Just 2 more sleeps till Ronny leads us to his first of many finals.

  8. Good Morning All,

I’m just listening to the BBC Scottish football podcast from Wednesday night. About 19 minutes in and there’s an interview with Ronny. A couple of points have been put to him, then this one, “As far as you’re concerned this is an old firm Derby”. That’s the exact wording. Is that a question or a statement?

Are sneaky interviewers trying to put words into people’s mouths to get a headline?

Anyhoo, Ronny answers the question and does not give the BBC the sound bite they crave. He does not say those two little words that were set up for him. I think he understands the issue.

I watched the interview and the fat feller with the glasses don’t know who he is. He is talking utter shit, he says football is a different business to other business’ maybe so but football as a business isn’t exempt from those laws and rules of society, Eg Corporate governance being the most obvious one and liquidation, there are not different liquidation rules for Football clubs! Hmmmmm

Where do they get these nuggets from?

  15. Morning timdom

Stunning but cold today. Sloppy. Take care.

    Why does Sunday matter?

    Does it matter?

It matters. Because it’s always vital to beat the FOD if you can.

And for the purposes of history’s writing…….there it REALLY matters…….namely, if they win it complements and embellishes their down but not defeated Phoenix fairytale.

While if we win it’s zombie shaped jelly n ice cream and yet another chance to let them know that they are not ra peepul.

  18. Good morning all, or for Tims the other side of the world , good evening.

The ole old/ new club, I heard a discussion on Shortie yesterday morning about Tourism Scotland and how they actively promote the lie about the existence of the Loch Ness Monster in order to generate tourism and fleece the gullible, her existence is accepted as everyone with a vested interest as a fact- it costs too much to admit otherwise.

(Not that I’m starting a Nessie debate)
