The language of defeat, crowd-sourced media management

1075

Speaking at the weekend, Kenny McDowell looked ahead to the cup semi-final saying “We aren’t going into the game fearing a big defeat.  If anything we are going into the game knowing we’ll have to be on our guard and wary of that, but we are not going into it fearing of losing by a big score-line”.

Admitting that he’s wary about the prospect of a big defeat is the last thing you want your manager to say publicly as you prepare for a cup tie.  It conditions everyone to the prospect of defeat.

From Ronny, it’s all positive: “It’s going to be fun.

“It’s good that this is a big game, so we won’t be underestimating the opponent.

“We are in a good position, we can win everything and that motivates.”

Big games, big results, are often won in the head before a team takes to the field.  You win because you know you’re going to win, because you know you can rely on your team-mates.  You know that if you do your job correctly, there is nothing the opposition can do, short of elbowing you in the face and hope you retaliate.

No game of football is easy and Ronny and the players will know they will have to work for anything they get on Sunday, but the preparatory work has been done.  The players are fit, rested and can’t wait for Sunday.

On a side note, I can’t believe how thoroughly the New Club advert has penetrated media coverage this week.  On top of Motivator McDowell, can you imagine ‘ex-players’, pundits and fans having to explain their existence and relevance in the run up to a semi-final?  This wasn’t a crowd-source advert, it was crowd-sourced media management, which ran rings around the best paid PRs in the business.

Let me know (celticquicknews@gmail.com) if you want a ticket to CQN 11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March – Cup Final weekend, as it happens, or you can buy a ticket at the bottom of this page.  I’m in the mood now.

All the Nessie toys I see are green.

And when I saw the real one popping in for a gingsters pork pie at that petrol station in inverness she was definitely green.

Ipso. Nessie is a Tim. A highland Tim with lots of what they lack – history!

I was at the St Fergus night the day the orcs lost at home v Killie what a night that was.

  5. For what it’s worth, this is the team I think Ronny may start with on Sunday:-

    Gordon

    Lustig Van Dijk Denayer

    Matthews Brown Bitton Izaguirre

    Commons Johansen

    Griffiths

Subs: Stokes; Forrest; Guidetti; Ambrose; Zaluska; Henderson

Seems like a solid enough selection, the 3-4-2-1 formation hopefully enough to pierce the Sevco heart, making them the deidest deid team ever.

The message should be, keep the heid, stay focused and shoot on sight.

We have plenty options on the bench if things go wrong.

I was away last weekend & start of this so never had the opportunity to post congratulations to the Bhoys who placed the Herald Ad. All statements were factually correct & beyond dispute – power to your sword.

We have been subjected to lies, damned lies and ignorance in the days following the ad and not too many ex-Celts emerge with any real credit – Tom Boyd, you’re one glowing exception.

Safe journeys to all attending Sunday’s game, remember to tell THEM the truth – they let their club die.

This match is an unwelcome distraction; the real football starts again at Dens on Saturday week.

Saint Columba was an Honest man i’m sure and had the first sighting in 565. So with 1450 years of unbroken history i would put Nessie down as a grand old monster. With no reported accidents with boat propellers, i would suggest that she’s ever been liquidated!

You are right, i posted earlier today that two nights ago the BBC tried to get Ronny to call the game the Old Firm. He wouldn’t. Now listening to Last nights BBC podcast, they tried the same thing with Broony.

Again, Broony wouldn’t call it the Old firm. He called it a Celtic – Rangers game.

The MSM are pathetic and so see through it’s embarrassing!!!

  15. I wonder what celtic will turn up on Sunday. Hope to god it’s the free flowing side. If not we could be in for a fight. I feel celtic will need to put some daylight between them early, and keep thompson out the equation. I also hope we’re tough enough to handle what they will bring to the game. Many of the teams I grew up watching, had men more than capable of putting it about, but the present side for me anyway don’t have a hay, auld, brogan. Just a wee hunch, but try and keep count of the free kicks they get just outside our 18 yard box, a favoured ploy of the mib. Stay safe to all the bhoys attending. Safety in numbers is the name of the game here. And justice be served on that mob.

  16. Following overwhelming success with the “buy a brick” petition, they turn their FFin’ attention to 32Red:

“take assertive action against current board

We the undersigned supporters of [Sevco] Football Club, demand that our current shirt sponsor ’32 Red’, take assertive action against the [S]FC board for the negative publicity generated by their recent actions. The way our board conduct business reflects on the reputation of their sponsors and we would implore [demand, Sammy, demand]’32 Red’ to take this VERY seriously. Failure to do so will be taken as a show of support for the actions of the current board,

In the event that no contact with the club is made on this matter by 1800hrs on Sat 31st January 2015, our support will no longer be making use of the ’32 Red’ betting service. In addition, those attending this weekends internationally televised *** **** match will cover the ’32 red’ logo on our replica shirts, by blanking over completely, or covering with the logo of a betting service competitor.

We sincerely hope ’32 Red’ see sense in this matter and prevent such action being necessary.

Please do not make the mistake of underestimating our resolve.”

    ——

“Please add a comment with your signature to say if you are willing to cover the logo or stop use of their site etc.

The written word goes a long way with these things.

This petition will be hand delivered to their Gibraltar office TODAY [Thought we were givin’ them to the 31st, Sammy?]so let’s share, tweet, do whatever you can to bring in extra signatures.”

Watching the antics of the media is actually witnessing ‘bigotry in action’ ……. the level of anti all things Celtic is pathetic, …. but that’s all right, it cost oldco their very existence, and it is costing the tabloids (for example) their circulation figures …….when will they ever learn, bless them…

(Cannot quite get my head round why any CELTIC supporter would go anywhere near Hampden on Sunday, but Hey Ho…. It can be argued that you are simply ‘supporting’ Celtic, but, IMO, we should be taking a stand against THE BIG LIE)

  20. jimtim – Whatever Rangers turn up on Sunday they will need to be at 100%. Nothing less. Not a single player can be anything under their very very best. They will need to win every single individual battle all over the pitch and not lose concentration for a second. I have seen them play 3 times this year and each time, their concentration whilst defending has been suspect and if it were not for the level of opposition they were against they would have considerably less points. All mistakes will be punished on Sunday.

Celtic are fitter, faster, more skillful and sharper due to playing at a higher level. Do not under estimate the importance of the sharpness.

I expect it to be a little like Motherwell the other week. They will sit back and pack out the centre but once we score it will fall apart.

I see the Rangers players say all the pressure is on Celtic, what I will say is Celtic will be able to get away with mistakes, they know they can’t even afford one.
