The measure of Virgil van Dijk

128

It’s the measure of Virgil van Dijk that we’re even having the debate about whether he’s the best central defender we’ve seen in decades. If he’s not, he’s close. That said, measured against the other two players Southampton have secured from Celtic in recent seasons, his ability to influence a game is not of the standard of Victor Wanyama.

It’s no surprise that Southampton have been under pressure to sell Wanyama, or that they have apparently gambled on holding him, better options than Tottenham are likely to lie ahead for Victor. Virgil has perhaps found his level.

I’m off to read all those articles about how good Celtic are at developing >£10m footballers and why Southampton are not as clever as Celtic, just like the ones criticising Celtic for not being as clever as Dundee United.

More on Virgil later in the week, best of luck to him on England.

  1. GlassTwoThirdsFull on 1st September 2015 4:13 pm English window open until 6.00. If we have a 15% sell-on on Virgil that’s £3m for us if Liverpool buy him for £20m in the next two hours.

Always assumed that a sell on clause was based on the difference between what the club paid and sold the player. So if Southhampton paid £11.5. and sold him to Liverpool 2 hrs later for £20m then 15% would be £1.28m to Celtic.

  2. Greetings Paul67,

    Terrible news!

As you may not be aware, on 17 June 2019 Virgil Van Dijk, suffering terribly, will be admitted to a state mental hospital on the outskirts of Southampton due to the Shoodnagon virus. A horrible condition that turns normal healthy people into mumbling wrecks unable to say anything other than ‘Shoodnagon’.

In better news though, he will at least have company when he is admitted to the same ward as Victor Wanyama and Fraser Forster.

Did I read that Chelsea have signed Michael Hector for £4 million? Big lump of wood that played on loan for Aberdeen a couple of seasons back (a centre half).

I think Jose Mourinho is having a laugh now. Its as though he`s trying to get sacked!

Only 7 and a half hours before someone digs out a list of free agents :)

  4. never mind awe that wantin this player or that player or this position strengthened…have a butchers at the balance sheet…here, buy these euro league tickets up while yer looking…

Still doubt a side with Wanyama Ledley Ki Hooper VVD would’ve been knocked out by Malmo

Oh well, it looks like Anto is our new striker, if Catman and Lennybhoy are correct.

Read an interesting stat earlier, since the year 2010, we have taken in £63 mill from english clubs alone.

In the past two years we have taken in £30+ mill from the sale of VW, VvD, FF and GH, and spent the square root of feck all.

And some wonder why we don’t qualify for the CL.

    Happy clapping.

I thought Southampton were not prepared to sell big Vic in this window ? or now they have bought VVD are they changing there mind about selling Vic ? H.H.

  8. So sorry to see big Virgil go but delighted he has left on good terms plus the transfer fee will help us strengthen.

  9. I’m not happy at losing our best player, but see if we’re to develop and grow as a club, we need to make big money on players. Yes, some of that money (most) needs to be re-invested in more players, players that will in turn be sold on at a profit.

Unfortunately the game of football and with scouting there is no sure thing. But the idea is to over time trade up until we have high enough calibre players to be able to properly compete in Europe.

We buy VVD for £2.5m sell him for £12m – hopefully if we buy Simunovic at £4m we can sell him for £15m in a couple of years but also bring in another player, say a developing striker, who can net us a further £10m profit. As long a large chunk of the funds are being reinvested in players, and as long as those players don’t turn out to be a waste of money, we will eventually move up a level.

Unforunately there are a lot of variables there.

Eight signings by us, before the summer window slams shut, (seven more than

    Arsenal)

Very substantial turnaround in personnel under Ronny, leaving just a hand full of players from the Neil Lennon era.

Any further action will be outgoing loans in Scotland, I’d imagine.

With the English window now closing in an hour or so, we’d have from now until midnight to look at the ‘left outs’ that couldn’t get another English offer.

No thanks to that, had to hold AS with no other strikers coming in.

I hope he gets his head down again as he’s scored a fair few goals against all SPL opposition.

  11. Good luck Virgil.pity Tony Watt didn’t screw the nut .when at Celtic.would have been a sensation alongside Leigh Griffiths. Does anybody know why Tony was let go.

  12. Is the selection of transfer deadline day for the whirlwind of police action on the former incumbents at oldco a complete coincidence, or just a good day to bury bad news?

  13. blantyretim is praying for the Knox family on

We entice players like VW and VVD by telling them we will put them in the shop window allowing them a move to England for their bank accounts

I have no problem with that.

    Good luck Virgil

Yeah u will win feck all but your bank balance will keep you happy in your obscure retirement

No hero worship for you and your ilk

I think Victor would have seen off Malmo on his own. Would have defended corners and scored a few (#rosetintedglassescsc)!

  15. Best wishes to Virgil, a quality player who has all the tools to make it at the top of the game. I felt he coasted on occasion in the SPFL and this affected his performance but I enjoyed watching him.

If £11.5m plus add-ons is the deal that seems fair to me; now I’m sure I was shot down in flames along with a few others when we suggested this a few weeks ago but an expert on here who said we’d be lucky to get £5m…

    Rt Rev David Hay 4.31pm-

Fair point. After qualifying for the CL in 2012/13 we signed Ambrose, Miku , Lassad and a goalie named Lubos Kamenar.

In 2013/14 after qualifying for the CL we signed Pukki, Nir Bitton and some guy called Max Oberschmidt from Fulham.

If these guys were our blockbuster CL qualification signings then god only knows what our Plan B Europa League signings would have been!

  17. T.Watt apparently was ‘unmanageable’ at the time. To be fair, he didn’t exactly disprove that with his exploits in Belguim where he fell out with 2 managers.

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I will be quite happy if we keep Stoksie we know he can score goals in the SPL if Ronny plays him in his best position which in my opinion is striker.I also think if Ronny decided for certain games to play two up front Griffiths and stokes could be a good duo. H.H.

  19. Sell your best players every season….and buy cheap replacements,…very cheap.

30 Million plus in last two years….and we sign the likes of Ciftci.

    Pathetic really.

THE GREEN MAN. Unfortunately I cant see a player in Cifti however, I hope im wrong but for me he has a lot to prove that he is Celtic class. H.H.

  25. Have to laugh at the lads constantly blaming the boogeymen in the boardroom.

The board reduced season books by £100 and the ‘best fans in the world’ didn’t show any uptake. Attendances are poor.

But I suppose it’s the boogeymens fault that so many so-called fans don’t give a monkeys.

Everybody in fitba sells their best players apart from Real Madrid and Barcelona. That’s it.

Delight as Ryan Christie joins Celtic

By: Mark Henderson on 01 Sep, 2015 16:35

CELTIC Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Ryan Christie from Inverness Caledonian Thistle on a four-year contract.

Ryan will return to Inverness on loan for a season, with Celtic having the option of him returning to Celtic in January 2016, an option which the club is likely to exercise.

Although only 20, Ryan has made almost 70 first-team appearances for Inverness CT. A Scotland Under-21 internationalist, the highly-rated forward was also voted Scotland’s Young Player of the Year last season by the Scottish Football Writers’ Association.

Celtic Manager Ronny Deila said: “Ryan is a hugely talented young player and it is great news that we have secured his long-term future with Celtic.

“He is someone who has so much in his game and he is a young player who will excite our fans and ultimately be an important part of our future success.”

The new Bhoy will be officially unveiled tonight at Celtic Park at a press conference which will be held at 6pm.

  28. Joe Filippis Haircut on

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART. If the choice is between Cifti and Stokes for me its Stokes every time but that is just my opinion im sure others will disagree. H.H.

  29. I have no problem with buying players to give them the shop window treatment and make money on them.

what i have a problem with, is not implementing a system where rolling improvement on this recruitment idea is in place to improve the team year on year by investing the money we bring in on a better quality of player to sell on.

there will be nothing else done today.

our manager (glorified coach) is away on

holiday to his villa in the south of spain FFS.
