The Patrick and Leigh Show

782

Whenever Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts were on the ball last night, Lincoln Red Imps sensed danger. Both could control instantly, control with little space and disorientate defenders. Leigh and Patrick aside, the rest had an excellent first half. Passing was crisp, accurate and fast.

The shape of the team, with variously Lustig, Brown, Tierney and Shevchenko operating in a moveable back three, allowed players to find space between Red Imps’ 5-4-1.

These games are not about impressing anyone, they are about getting into the next round, but the tie was over by halftime, allowing Celtic to step the pace down, and Red Imps to show that they were more than they appeared to be in the first half.

Stiffer tests lie ahead, when more will need to perform at the levels of Patrick and Leigh.

Well this is one area where I will have no fears about Rodgers.

He won’t tolerate players who are at it. Between than and his apparent love for tactical flexibility, I am still over the moon at his appointment :)

  2. James

I am also delighted with Brendans appointment, I still think the policy will be the same, hence he will have little to spend unless he can shift a few, but all in all he is a massive upgrade on Ronny.

    Things to do, laters.

  3. CLOGHER CELT:

I do like Sinclair, and Rodgers obviously does.

But if he’s going to be extortionately expensive and is going to make it harder than it needs to be, the club ought to have identified that fact weeks ago and told the manager it was unfeasible. He would have understood. We would have understood.

We could have moved on and signed someone else.

If this deal’s not going to be done we’ve wasted time on it, time we don’t have. I just don’t get it.

  4. I’m my humble opinion, the abuse Peter Lawwell gets on here is ridiculous.

It seems like an obsession for many. Win, lose or draw it doesn’t matter , it’s PL’s fault.

No matter what manager we have, no matter what attendances we have, no matter who or how many we sign , it will never be enough for some.

PL is not faultless by any means, but this obsession is just crazy. And make no mistake it’s an obsession for some.

Hail, Hail to all non obsessive Celtic men and wuman.

You’ve at least made an argument.

But I already covered that in the piece. How long does it take to find those things out?

One phonecall could have covered it.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If it as simple as one phone call why did MU take so long to get Zlatan and why is it taking an eternity to get or not get Pogba (not that I care about MU)? SIMPLE – agents, players and selling clubs play around to get the best deal.

BTW how do you buy your car?

  8. The PL abusers are level 5s little helpers who come in here, they will of course deny it, it’s just the malcontents doing what they do, silly actually IMO.

Never happy, always complaining, the CFC board will never do anything right in they’r eyes, Fekin Uni mob splinter groups, a pimple on the arse of the world IMO, tomorrow’s future ,? Scary thought.

  9. mike in toronto on

See Goetze is returning to Dortumund after leaving them three years ago for Bayern Munich … maybe not as bad as doing the Celtic/Sevco thing, but still pretty bad …. will be interesting to see how the Dortmund fans receive him…

although the Dortmund forward line of Reus, Goetze, Schuerler, playing behind Aubemeyang (spelling?) sounds like it would have a few goals in it, and would be fun to watch.

I’d imagine if they win, he will be forgiven …

But, as some have said on here …. awfully hard to compete with those riches (football and money).

  10. Looking into Astana, how on earth do they manage to get by the state aid/state funded regulations? It seems the club is pretty much government funded, a government project? Apart from the fact they’re an Asian country.

Jose Mourinho has been in his job for just over a fortnight.

He’s signed three players, Ibrahimovic included. He’s on the verge of shattering the world transfer record.

Neither he nor the Utd board has been dragging its feet.

So we are off to an unpredictable surface with odd bounces here and there, similar to the rock last week only hotter.

Only reason I mentioned them at all.

  18. If the rumours are true (big if admittedly)

Our transfer policy has shifted towards British based players.

So far we appear to have lost several targets to EPL clubs (Robson-Kanu, Gunter, Duffy. Hyndman & Allen)

We’ve also seen Liverpool turn up their nose to loaning us some players (Flanagan & Ward)

With respect Jose Mourinho has been out of work with plenty of time for preparations. He might only be officially the Man Utd boss for just over a fortnight, but even the dogs in the street knew for previous months he was going to Man Utd.

You are not comparing like for like. When you have unlimited money , signings become less problematic.

But can you imagine the outcry if we let a player go on a free only to but him back for a few million, never mind Cira £100m. How does their CEO or equivalent survive that ?.

I am aware that we let CM go only to take him back , but that is a totally different scale.

I may not agree with all that you write, but keep blogging. I appreciate the time and effort that you must put in.

    Hail, Hail.

  22. 50 shades of green on 21st July 2016 5:01 pm

Dont get me wrong, it will give them an advantage but I don’t think they are that good. we should get at least a draw then turn them over at CP.

He he like the wee barb at the end off your post.

  23. James Forrest on 21st July 2016 4:58 pm

    ooft calm down

You didn’t bring United up but you seemed to cite them as a good example how to do business.

My point was, a team that’s about to break the world transfer record (For a player, so far, undeserving) gives you an idea.

Make no bones about it, Jose has had the United job unofficially for months and I have no doubt that United have been in negotiations with Mikhitarian and Zlatan for longer than they would admit. They both have the same agent who is on good terms with United. They both turned down contract offers from their new club.

It would be naïve to suggest these deals were done over a couple of weeks.

Only a handful of clubs could afford to pay Zlatan. There are dozens of clubs who are looking at the same players we are. These players will hedge their bets more than the superstars.

  24. CultsBhoy - sees right through Lawwell and the Board on

    TET

Yep not just that its £1m/ year for shrinking a business but as a proportion of turnover the Celtic CEO remuneration is in a league of its own….

Now if he was growing the business and exploiting the potential of the club, managing risks appropriately, communicating with the fans, not indulging in nepotism etc … Essentially maximising the business potential of the club and keeping out of football matters , I think folk would be happy enough with his salary and manipulation of his bonus entitlement…

… But we all know he’s not doing those things .. He’s lining his pockets and heated driveway… And probably his son’s too

  25. GREENPINATA;

    Thank you mate.

I wasn’t attempting to compare like with like. Someone asked me a direct question about how fast clubs could conduct their business; he mentioned Mourinho and Man Utd. I thought that actually did make my point because he HAS signed players since coming in and is now on the verge of the world’s biggest deal.

But yes, he did have a little time to think about targets. Brendan Rodgers did too, but that’s not the point either. He has picked the players he wants. It’s no longer up to him to get those deals done. There are people at Celtic Park who’s job it is to do that.

I am simply asking, how hard can it be? You can find out pretty fast if a player is outside your price range, if his wage demands are, if his agent fees will be a problem.

These negotiations – which haven’t got past making bids for the players – have taken WEEKS.

    I don’t think that’s acceptable.
