The Patrick and Leigh Show

782

Whenever Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts were on the ball last night, Lincoln Red Imps sensed danger. Both could control instantly, control with little space and disorientate defenders. Leigh and Patrick aside, the rest had an excellent first half. Passing was crisp, accurate and fast.

The shape of the team, with variously Lustig, Brown, Tierney and Shevchenko operating in a moveable back three, allowed players to find space between Red Imps’ 5-4-1.

These games are not about impressing anyone, they are about getting into the next round, but the tie was over by halftime, allowing Celtic to step the pace down, and Red Imps to show that they were more than they appeared to be in the first half.

Stiffer tests lie ahead, when more will need to perform at the levels of Patrick and Leigh.

  1. Mike in Toronto – I think you’ll be able to buy them direct from the club. Even back in the MON days of waiting lists I never had a problem getting tickets (apart from deidco games) direct from the ticket office – it’ll be on line now. You can print tickets from home if you buy online. Just checked the club site – tickets for the Aberdeen game are on sale now.

Do you seriously believe that every transfer negotiation, apart from where Celtic are involved, takes a couple of days to completion? You’re living in a fantasy world.

It is very rare for a club to make an opening bid which is immediately accepted. There is invariably a period of negotiation before they either agree a fee, or they don’t.

I guarantee you if PL just walked away every time an opening bid was rejected, you’d be the first on here slaughtering him for such intransigence and lack of ambition. You can’t have it both ways.

Celtic offered ÂŁ2.5m for Sinclair. It was rejected. They increased it to ÂŁ2.75m. That too was rejected. Maybe they’ll get him for ÂŁ3m. Maybe ÂŁ3.25m. Who knows?

But you want Celtic to walk away on rejection of the first bid. Some strategy that.

I am no moaning about it, the opposite in fact, I am happy with the way we try do do business, I just don’t think we execute it that well.

RD was a disaster in the business sense, I doubt BR will be, he will bring a sense of direction with him IMO, here’s hoping anyways.

Rodgers asked Lawwell to sign Sinclair, Duffy and Toure 2-3 weeks ago. All well within budget & all keen to play for Rodgers and Celtic.

Thanks mate. I had checked the website before, and didn’t see it listed.

I just checked again, and it looks like there are limited seats in 417-419. Decent view from there?

I think Celtic have enough domestically and we are trying to get players in to make us better and more prepared for Europe but the trouble is these guys are in demand hence the days rolling by without any news.

Other teams are signing players without any interest from any clubs and the players just want to get a new club in case they end up skint so sign for the first team who shows interest.

There are thousands of players we can sign. But why? are they any better than what we have? once you answer that question the pool to choose from gets smaller.

Our squad is still to big and adding in some new players won’t change that, Brendan will fancy one or two in this window while he tried to offload a few and by the end of the window i think we will have at least 4 new players in and at least the same amount out.

    My two quids worth,

  7. AULD TAM:

One of us is right and one of us is wrong.

I’ve told you what I think will happen; neither of these deals will be done and then we’ll hear how it was a bunch of circumstances beyond our control.

Four things get a deal done.

    1) Is the club interested in selling?

    2) Does the interested party have the money to buy?

    3) Is the player interested in signing?

    4) What will it take to get him to do so?

Now, as we’re working to a deadline, the longer a deal takes to complete the more unlikely it becomes that we’re going to even get a reasonable price. Do you think they’ll accept LESS than what they accepted yesterday, knowing we’re up against the clock? Or do you think they’ll whack ÂŁ250,000 onto the “acceptable” transfer fee? Cause I know which I would do.

Somewhere, if people are doing their jobs, is a list. The manager can sign off on that list, or not. But it has to exist. It has to be there. And on that list are options.

Sinclair and Duffy aren’t working out? Taking too long? Too complicated?

(Although no-one has told me WHY it’s complicated to pick up a phone and conduct a negotiation over it).

Then MOVE ON to the next targets.

Fans get that. Managers get that.

You are making excuses and they are poor ones, and I don’t know why you are bothering. This isn’t the first time this has happened. It happens EVERY YEAR … and every year I complain about it only to be told how stupid that is, only for us to be fobbed off later with what are CLEARLY panic buys.

So, I’ll tell you what … let’s just wait and see. History convinces me of what will happen next. I don’t know WHAT you are basing your optimism on.

When we left for our pre season tour of Slovenia our assistant coach said and I paraphrase, The club know who the targets are, it’s up to the suits to do the biz, this is where I have a prob with the policy, the penny pinching and the excuses for it.

Toure should have been in weeks ago, no transfer fee, only wages to neg, maybes he is asking for a fair whack, so what, we need quality, quality wins games, quality gets you, or at least gives you the chance of CL football, penny pinching gets you nowhere.

  10. Good evening friends.

Forgot there are Europa League qualifiers on tonight. I see Niall McGinn’s Aberdeen qualified for the 3rd qualifying round earlier. Tony Watt’s Hearts kick off at home in a couple of minutes following last week’s goalless draw in Malta. And Neil Lennon’s Hibs, who were up against it after a 0-1 home defeat to Brondby last week have got to half time goalless so, you never know.

Hopefully at least 3 out of 4 Scottish teams qualifying this week, for a change.

    Off in search of streams….

  11. ETims transfer “rumours” and posts from James Forrest (also about transfers, what a surprise) :o) ha ha jeez

  12. Auld Tam, Jame Forrest,

Any deal in business is far, far more complicated than either of you seem to believe.

First, there will be three, maybe more, agents involved, one for each club and one for the player, who may have more. They will all want a cut, even if all they did was introduce one agent to another(finders fee). Then several people in each club will have an influence, or at least a valued opinion on each transfer, coach, manager, business manager, CEO, physio, doctor. There will be clauses and sub-clauses, but no Santa Clauses, and that means only one thing, lawyers. They are not cheap, nor quick. Who do you think wrote the clause which just earn Celtic a reported ÂŁ1m when Victor went to Spurs, Peter Lawwel or John Park? It was a lawyer.

These are complicated business transactions, and only if someone throws huge amounts of money will it go through quickly.

I’m not making excuses for Celtic not getting the right players in, just pointing out some reality.

And yes I negotiate business deals, not in the football arena, mines is far less sexy, but everyone wants an opinion, and a cut.

So have we signed somebody yet?

And James, good to see you posting, been ages since there was someone to argue with, Awe_Naws away too!!!!!!

  14. Some people DO see conspiracy around every corner.

Some just don’t like hearing ANYTHING with which they don’t agree.

Some are determined to see nothing wrong with the strategy and the people in charge at all.

Others look at a team suffering years of neglect, catastrophic failures in Europe and a team that achieves less and less every year, being put together with pennies … and we worry.

But of course, we’ve got HOPELESSLY SIMPLISTIC ways of looking at the world.

Whilst others think even making an egg is a complex exercise requiring flow charts, a structural engineers report and planning permission beforehand.

  16. James Forrest –

I expressed neither optimism nor pessimism. I merely questioned your assertion that Celtic should walk away on rejection of an opening bid.

Celtic may sign Sinclair. They may not. I make no prediction either way.

  17. Doc

    Love ya loads brother :)

The only thing wrong with that analysis is that when you do as some here suggest and break these things down into their full complexity – and I admit, it ain’t no small thing – that even a layperson can grasp it when you write it down in its individual steps.

You know my problem? We’re still ON THE FIRST STEP.

We’ve not even sorted out a fee WITH THE CLUB ITSELF … in WEEKS.

We’re still on Step One of a process with more steps than Wembley.

And at some point we’re going to be told that we fell down on one of those steps. After spending weeks dickering around on the first one.

Nothing is surer in the world.

I think we will sign someone tonight, not sure if it will be any of the guys already mentioned. Brendan will have other targets but if he has spoke to PL weeks ago bout all 3 players as etims suggests and we never got any of them then i’d imagine PL had better have a good excuse for Brendan or DD will be getting a call.

  25. Watching the U-21’s. Good game. Good tempo from the young Celts. Worth watching…..

Also…let’s remember folks, that James Forrest (the blogger) is one of us. While I am not a big fan of his writing style, I do admire his passion for all things Celtic. For sure, go ahead and disagree with him. But, as they say, play the ball, not the man.

  31. From what I have seen tonight of young Calvin Millar, I wouldn’t be wasting a penny on the boy Sinclair from Villa, he has been putting quality crosses in to beat the band and had a very well taken goal chalked off for a dodgy had ball, had it not been a scottish ref it may well have stood, not convinced it was a handball, but am open to being wrong.
