The Patrick and Leigh Show

782

Whenever Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts were on the ball last night, Lincoln Red Imps sensed danger. Both could control instantly, control with little space and disorientate defenders. Leigh and Patrick aside, the rest had an excellent first half. Passing was crisp, accurate and fast.

The shape of the team, with variously Lustig, Brown, Tierney and Shevchenko operating in a moveable back three, allowed players to find space between Red Imps’ 5-4-1.

These games are not about impressing anyone, they are about getting into the next round, but the tie was over by halftime, allowing Celtic to step the pace down, and Red Imps to show that they were more than they appeared to be in the first half.

Stiffer tests lie ahead, when more will need to perform at the levels of Patrick and Leigh.

Ferguson was right :) He was an unproven kid asking for ridiculous money!

Players are so unbelievably, unbelievably greedy these days.

But yes, damn it … £40k a weeks does look like cake next to £100 million and £200k per week.

Obscene amounts of money by the way, which is one of the many reasons I’d not be in favour of us ever moving to the EPL. Me, the guy who has spent the day moaning about us NOT spending money … I would feel deeply uncomfortable with us ever spending like that, just for the moral reasons alone.

And to cap it off his long term aim is still to end up in Spain!

Don’t blame him mind you. Man Utd trying to make a statement, the reality is this is the most high profile player they can realistically get,

Haven’t posted in a while and seldom even lurk these days.

Like most supporters I have criticism of seeming inaction and indifference on the part of our Board which has given rise to screeds of negative comments on this site.

However, if the perma-disconted faction really want to change matters perhaps one of them could arrange to stand for election to the Board and change matters from within. He/she could publish his/her manifesto on CQN and we,who are shareholders, could make a reasoned decision whether or not to vote for him/her.

Unfortunately, posting the same rhetoric on a blog whilst it may be therapeutic is highly unlikely to achieve the desired outcome.

Put forward as a positive suggestion. HH

  4. I see Arsenal might be about to pay 10mil for Jason Denayer, i always thought he was kwality!

  5. traditionalist88 on 21st July 2016 5:24 pm

Absolutely. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United see great value in superstars. The commercial deals they can sign will be improved by having the next big superstar on board.

It’s indeed obscene but he obviously believed that he was as good as the players in the first team. Fergie would have given him 100k with the benefit of hindsight.

Barcelona have the right idea with buyback clauses!

I wrote an article for a non-Celtic site last week where I said I thought Pogba’s decision would effectively be a referendum on how players saw the Mourinho appointment.

I think it’s a big deal that Pogba is allegedly snubbing interest for Madrid to go there at the moment. It says a lot for how Mourinho is viewed across the game. Manchester United may or may not be on the wane, but players still believe this guy can work miracles.

  7. How ridiculous does Aberdeen’s Jonny Hayes look with that grotesque white hair?

Don’t think #Celtic will be signing anyone before tonight’s deadline. Understand they’re still hoping to add 2 before window closes.

Madrid or Manchester, a no brainer really, particularly with no CL for Man Utd – so either its the financial package Man U have tabled that Madrid wouldn’t match or Mourinho has talked him round.

A strange one all the same,

Blog extremely interesting tonight thanks to your conversations with fellow fans. Wish you were here more often.

On your point re signing or not signing before the deadline, I fully agree. I honestly believe we will get that central defender in before the deadline, but only 5 hours to be proved correct which is worrying.

If we are almost at the point of concluding a deal, and it’s a few thousand we are discussing, should be almost a done deal.

If however we get told tomorrow we just could reach a compromise due to vastly differing valuations, like you, I’ll be more than a little annoyed that we didn’t have a plan B!

  11. Just flicked over to Ventspils v Aberdeen and after naming the sub that had just came the commentator, i have no idea why, started talking about Maribor turning over Ce, getting into group stages and facing Chelsea etc also mentioned Astana but funnily enough never mentioned their role in the death of Rangers. Quietly put remote down on arm of sofa beside wife and told her I was going to make a cuppa, she doesn’t like me ranting at the TV or threatening to put my boot through it so thought that would be the next best move to make.

  12. “just came on” and “Celtic” were today’s mystery missing words.

Yip, if we were growing as a business I could well understand the wage, in fact he would be well worth it, but as it’s going in the opposite direction as a football team, after all, that’s what we are.

    HH

  14. Owen – He was talking about Maribor because they are Aberdeen’s next opponents in the qualifiers, and he did mention that they beat Rangers.

  15. The deadline for adding one new signing to the 3rd qualifying round squad is next Tuesday night.

  16. I see the EPL circus is in full swing. Liverpool have just shelled out £25m for a player Newcastle paid £13m for last year. That’s right ..Newcastle who were utter dross all season.

Liverpool have now spent over £40m this summer and if any of the players were sat next to me on the bus ( highly unlikely to be fair) I would not know them.

The Pogba transfer will be trumpeted as proof that the EPL is the only place to play football. It isn’t, it’s a place to get paid way beyond your talents reach and not a lot more.

Has anyone gone to the EPL from Bayern, Barcelona or the Madrid teams this year?

  17. Celtic hoping for 2 players before the window closes? Now, I’m not one for buying all the smsm says but I would earnestly hope that, given our only acquisitions so far are two youngsters that we are looking for more than two in.

At least one CH and a full back as well as another striker is the minimum for me. It appeared BR was interested in a centre mid as well. The right one would help.

Maybe he will get more from the squad than Ronnie did but i still feel we need quality and character in the squad.

We can add 1 player to the squad between now and next week, but it’s doubtful anyone signing now would be pitched in next wed even if he arrived match fit and wasn’t a risk in the sense that he’d be pitched in to 30 plus degrees off heat on a plastic pitch after a long journey, the frenzy that accompanies signing for a new club etc. So I’m not desperate for a signing before weds, but I would say we need 4 in before the domestic campaign kicks off.

  18. Picture this scenario.

Celtic have had outline discussions with a player and/or his agent. Giving rough wage figures, bonus structure etc. After last night’s result the players agent comes to Celtic and says “we have been offered £x extra per week by another club” the agent does this in full knowledge of Celtic’s position and the impending transfer cut off point. The agent has several potential clubs to choose from so scaring off one is no big deal and 10% is 10% after all.

If the transfer collapses whose fault is it?

My default position not being the CEO and Board of Celtic are the root of all evil, I would be of the opinion that it was the agent but many on here would disagree.

Was working until 8 last night but managed to get a flyer in the hope of racing home as quick as i could to find a stream and catch as much of the 1st half as i could.

Stuck sportsound(normally prefer not to but can’t read updates while driving!) on the radio at about 7.50 as i drove off and about 5 minutes later my jaw dropped when the funny that was commentating announced in a completely ott sensational manner that we would be out of Europe if things stayed the same……grrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never managed to find a stream despite trying for an hour but there was no way i was putting the radio on in the house to hear any more of that type of stuff and just tried to read the updates inbetween failed attempts to find a working link, so thanks to all the bhoys that contributed and a BIG thank you to Lymmbhoy for providing footage of our goals.

  23. I envisage a similar test to what we encountered against Quarabag.

They will be technical, tidy, and physically strong.

I’d take a 2-1 defeat over there right now….as I would be confident we could overturn that at Celtic Park…. Easy (ish)

  24. Go tell the Spartim on

Wtf does Chris McLaughlin know, he’ll still be rattling on about “the shock of Gibraltar” to his granweans, trumpet. The SMSM follow the same formula we do every year, we don’t get players in we badly need in time, and they make the quantum leap of saying so

The EPL is trying to make itself bigger than the champions league, quite simply cause they can’t win it.

China will soon overtake them with ridiculous transfer fees and wages

  25. GREENPINTA & TONYDONNELLY @ this page.

100% on PL – has any of these serial complainers looked at our “on the park’ record under him – it is second only to the Stein era, when of course we were operating on a level financial playing field.

Now we are circa thirty-first in the UK and probably sixty, or, seventy, in the financial football world. When the Chinese inflation effect gets fully factored in over the next few years, we may well be down around the one hundred mark.

We could/should have been in the CK groups in the last two years – we were let down at the final hurdle, in a eminently winnable position, by those ON the park and in the dugout.

    JAMES FORREST@ this page

For an experienced Celtic writer and someone who I always look to read – you are being so naive, maybe purposely, in your criticism of our prowess in negotiating transfers.

There are major six variables in any negotiation – each club’s position, player’s willingness to come to Scotland, player’s agent, player’s wages and of course the transfer fee.

We can make our desire for the player crystal-clear, however we are fighting an uphill battle on every other thing, due to where we do our business.

Nowadays it is almost impossible for us to sign players that are in high demand elsewhere – that’s why Roberts, Dembele and Denayer before them, should be seen as great successes.

  26. clogher celt on

In my view the problem re signings was created with the appointment of RD and with his retention beyond the point where it made any sense to keep him.

On top of that we have a faltering player recruitment process which seems has gone downhill for at least 2-3 years.

Due to the lack of planning around coaching/recruitment we now find ourselves racing against the clock and at the mercy of other clubs and agents.

  27. Re discussion on our signing policy and execution. Whilst Celtic can claim to be very shrewd in the market for signing players on the cheap and selling them on for significant profit, i think we are also guilty of negligence when it comes to getting the right players into the team at the right time! BR has stated his need, it looks like our primary targets are out of our price range (TBC) and we will end up with players who “might” develop into that type of player.

Its been a while since we signed players of that calibre and its about time we brought those in – the team needs experience and leadership. PL needs to get it done and i’m frustrated we are not yet closing deals. I hope to be proved wrong.

Rangers on the other hand have been shrewd – a mix of experience in Krankjar and Barton, they have some decent youngsters who will be better this year, they have speed in o’halloran and a striker who knows where the net is. if they bring in a quality center half they will be contenders, especially with the MIBs.

Time for Celtic to exert our financial dominance!

  28. RobertTressell (6.05pm), perhaps we could sign Astana’s top striker and tell him we’ll pick him up while we’re out there.

He’d be rested & ready to prove himself against his former employers, and he’d be well used to the pitch and the weather conditions…

  29. Only opinions of course, but think Paul 67’s headline should of been

Aston Villa apparently wanting between 5 and 6 million for Sinclair I cant say I have seen the player but it is a lot of money for Celtic apparently he is on 54 k per week. H.H.

Villa can go an raffle for 5 / 6 million

They bought him for 2.3, and he’s hardly set the heather on fire there since joining.

Surely there is plan b and c

I know we are rumoured to have bid for that young Polish winger.

At the Euros I was really impressed by the guy playing down left hand side for Hungary. Thought he was excellent. Even in game against Belgium.

  32. Well done to Celtic last evening, did exactly what was expected first half.

    Interesting debate on Transfers…

I’m in two minds over this; firstly I’m in total agreement with those who say let Brendan take his time, sort out the squad and bring in the players he wants, the management of the Celtic squad has been neglected for years, yet those who are wary of the perceived lack of action/investment have also got a point, the PLC have a decade of form on this.

Still BR showed his judgment and astuteness in bringing Dembele in, much rather that than waiting all night to get Pukki(c).

    Hail Hail
