The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

  8. Swedish press confirmed Bang Bang has gone to AIK.

AIK borrow nygamle Mohamed Bangura from Celtic. The loan for the remainder of the season.

    – To Mohamed has become available for AIK, and the results while in the headlines means that we are in a race for the gold, there are two crucial things that interacted to set this up, says AIK’s sports director Jens Andersson T on the club’s website.

    Email

AIK is there fighting in the top of the headlines and now the team gain a familiar player. It is Mohamed Bangura who borrowed from the Scottish Celtic for the rest of the season. The club announced on its website.

    – AIK want to maximize the opportunity to plunge into the gold fight and when this opportunity arose now, it feels great to get the crown last year at Rasunda with a rich sporting bet on riots straight out of the headlines, says AIK Football AB’s CEO Thomas Edselius.

    “Offensive force”

Bangura came to AIK in 2010 and left the club for Celtic 2011th Striker has made 31 matches and 13 goals in the headlines say the club.

    – Mohamed properties and his preferences and attitudes towards this solution, along with his AIK history are arguments to suggest that this team brings offensive power and excellence, says Jens Andersson T

  10. Last week I took a call on behalf of a company trying to acquire Celtic shares. Range £7-£15. I gave the guy short shrift but wrote about it here. It was either serious someone trying to build a holding or a scam. I received one reaction here suggesting it was a scam.

Today they were back wanting to buy , promising to send a non disclosure agreement with information. I am now pretending interest . The NDA has duly arrived, within minutes, but with little info. Their registered office is New York and they were back on the phone checking I had received it. I indicated that I wanted more information and they have promised this. I will pursue this as far as I can.

    Will never sell my shares.

I bought a book from the promising Tom Bradby back in 1998 – got him to sign it – and it has finally turned up as a film asnd he contributing to the screenplay. Perhaps it has already been discussed on CQN but Shadow Dancer is worth seeing because it operates on several levels. A right good tense drama about an individual caught up in an impossible situation – her long held beliefs undermined by her personal needs. It is set in Belfast deals with The Troubles, the role of the security services, Provisional IRA and it does not moralise.

Looking forward to another successful evening tomorrow and then several Champions League trips to Glasgow.

Typical posted this on last thread just as you lot bunked off here…

I’m a long time lurker from sunny Greenock who is currently living in Barca, and who has finally got my password through. Yipee…

Now to save some time my real name is obviously Hun McHun, from County Hun, Hunland, The Republic of Hun, Hun Solar System, Hun Galaxy, Universe of Hun.

Hail Hail CQN’ers It’s been a fine read (most of the time) don’t know if this is good or bad but I have been aching to give my tuppence worth on some of the myriad of topics covered on this fine site. I look forward to being involved in some of these lively debates.

    In fact here’s to becoming a master-debator…

just a random one but hear goes….. I am a bit of a late comer to all this posting malarky so it may not be as original as i like to consider it to be but here goes

has anyone spotted the “Cole Sear ” Rangers supporters bus on their travels?

  15. Ah, finally able to get passed the first page and into the land of CQN. Opened up in a new browser (Chrome) and working fine Paul, thanks for the help.

A read a while back that we should go for Jamie Carragher(sp) from the pool, don’t think he would be the center back we would be looking for considering he’s a fullback, plenty of experience though.

What’s the injury situation for the morra?

  16. The dreaded trial…

SOUTHEND United’s Bilel Mohsni is to go on trial with Scottish Premier League giants Celtic.

The 25-year-old defender returned home to France after Blues rejected West Ham’s offer to sign him.

But he will be heading to Glasgow this week in a bid to earn a permanent contract with the Glasgow club.

“Celtic are keen to take a closer look at Bilel and have asked him in to train with them for a few days,” said a source close to the player.

“Southend have told him they don’t want him back and he wants to be playing at a higher level, so it suits everyone if he does soon move on.

“West Ham were not willing to pay what Southend wanted for him but we’re closer to the transfer deadline now and hopefully something can be sorted out if Bilel impresses them,” the source added.

Mohsni, who can also play in midfield and up front, has not returned to Roots Hall since the end of the season.

And he spent the first fortnight of pre-season training with West Ham. The Hammers were willing to pay around £150,000 to secure his services but Blues were believed to be asking for a far higher sum.

  17. Welcome to all the new and returning posters. It must have been frustrating for you all having to read some of the pash being posted by myself and others and not being able to contribute.

    Many happy posts to you.

  18. Favourite Swedish TV moments…..

Well it’s a dead heat between the muppets swedish chef, or this one film I saw where a guy arrived to fix the jacuzzi.

    Don’t make me choose.

  19. ASonOfDan

Makes me feel quite nostalgic for the MON years. A queue forming outside Barrowfield on the 30th/31st August/January as trialist after trialist went through the door, none of them destined to sign (except Varga)

It’s about time there were more Greenock-born bhoys on here!
