The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

    Boly ?

Italian media credit Fiorentina with an interest in Boly. Some claim they will sign him if they sell their 19 year old Serbian centre half-Matija Nastasic to Manchester City for 9 million Euros .

Some strange questions for someone who has been reading CQN for ages.

Look at the UEFA site and see what they have as rangers last game. It aint Berwick Rangers…

    ———————————————————————————————

Was thinking the exact same thing. I’ve been waiting months for a password reset but reading every day and those aren’t the questions of someone that’s been reading, more like the questions of a hun wanting to know our thoughts

I’ve got 1 ‘goal’ chopped off on saturday and 2 ‘penalties’ denied falkirk the week before, anymore for anymore?

Good list but you forgot extra 1.6m UEFA gave us as bonus for Europa leage, the £500k recieved for Hoovield when Southampton got promoted and 1m we recieved for Philly game v Franco’s 11

So that takes us up to about £9m taken in

    Henrikson £1.5m

    Boly £1.5m

    Rhodes. £4.5m = £7.5m+

    Wages about £60k per week

Still leaves us about £1m and £40k better off

This doesnt include 2 play off CL games and another 3 home European games ( worst can be Europa league)

Seems no brainer to me HH

  12. I live in Sweden. Was at the game in Helsingborgs last tuesday in the North stand where it was a mix of HIF and Celtic fans. Got talking to an HIF supporter at half time who turned out to be an under 21’s player for HIF in his day. Anyhow, we were talking about this exact same topic, how the Allsvenskan is a bit like the SPL without the big 2, (ahem…. one). Much more balanced. They play a very physical game here too similar to us.

Scotland 2 Sweden 1, Italy 1990. World Cup USA 1994, a young dreadlocked Swedish forward, Larsson, and a team that finished third that year. World Cup 1998, Scotland there, Sweden not, having finished third in our group. Last major qualification for us, but Sweden have been at more than a few finals since then. Sweden ranked 10 in Europe at the start of the year so would be a terrific achievement to knock their champions out.

    ..

I Bet Sweden and a Certain Young Dreadlock ‘Star’ Each way in 94 to Win and be TGS.. In America.. Henrik was Not given the Game time but he Did Score one or Two.. Sweden IMHO Could have Won it in the USA..

Me and Henrik Moved to Rotterdam in the 90’s.. I lived 100 meters from De Kuip Stadd.. And NEVER went to See Him.. 6 Months after I left Rotterdam to go to Australia Henrik Signed for Celtic.. I Told my Dutch mate he Would be a Star in Glasgow.:

  14. Right, today there is NO ‘where am I?’.

Instead I vill ask different questions (cause I do not know ze answers). Schultz bring me ze questions…..

    1. As you walk along the Gallowgate towards CP, as you approach the junction with Fielden Street/Millerston Street a Blue Lagoon has been built in place of a wee row a shops including a pub. What was that pub called?

    2. Opposite the now sadly gone pub, Reigart a Coatbridge demolition firm is tearing down the buildings (as if there aren’t enough places needed pulling down back in the iron burgh).

Only a shell is left, the tiled insides of which suggest that it may have been a wash-house, baths, or steamie of some sort.

    Here is a picture

    What was it?

Does anyone recall either answer. Thanks for your help and where eez Hogan?

The reason that I asked the question, and added if there was any official word on it. Is I have a meathead of a mate that keeps telling me that on the Rangers website they still list all the trophies that they have won.

It’s just that I have never seen anything on the S.F.A’s page about this.

But thanks. I checked out the UEFA page. Need to copy and paste that to the meathead.

Dorin Goian vows to return to Rangers following loan spell with Italian Serie B side Spezia

The Romania defender became the latest first-team regular to head for the Ibrox exit door last week when he sealed a move to Italian Serie B side Spezia.

Goian told The Daily Record: “In 10 months I’ll be back to Glasgow. I am in Italy for one year for a loan and that’s it.”

“When it’s over I’ll have my contract with Rangers again and I hope something is going to change and I’ll get the chance to play in the SPL again with Rangers.”

“I think it will happen because I heard before I left many teams will have problems with money this year without Rangers. The TV money is down so there is good reason to make it so Rangers can come back quickly.”

Good shout! Did not play their best in the semi-final, but would have made good finalists.

I think that UEFA thing is a bit of a misnomer. They only ever put up details of top flight clubs. Dunfermline, who we know still exist is also listed on UEFA’s site with a last game of 12 May against Kilmarnock.

UEFA just don’t care about updating the pages of teams outwith the top divisions so this gives no incling into UEFA’s thinking about Rangers and whether they consider them the same team or not.

I think it was Whitevale swimming baths. Spent a few hours swimming there. On the way home there was a bakers on the other side of the Gallowgate where for a threepenny bit you got a bag of yesterdays cakes.

On account of being starving after the swimming they tasted like tomorrow’s.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw who was reffing, i thought what’s he doing in the fourth tier of Scottish football? And then lo and behold Berwick denied a perfectly good goal from a corner in injury time. They don’t even try and hide it these days.
