The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

you don’t mention Malmo playing Notts Forest in the European Cup Final. Only Trevor Francis’s diving header separated the teams.

Wouldn’t a Scandal/Scotia Super League be an attractive proposition. Celtic, Hertz, DU,DONS, copenhagen, Brondby, Aalborg, AIK stockholm, Malmo, Gothenburg, Rosenborg, Brenn Bragan

Could be a nice competitive league?

Don’t know if this has been posted ,

but i heard that the search for the Essex Lion was called off .

The cost would have been millions.

Rangers once chased 11 Lions .

    They were never caught .

    Cost was liquidation…

Scotland 2 Sweden 1, Italy 1990. World Cup USA 1994, a young dreadlocked Swedish forward, Larsson, and a team that finished third that year. World Cup 1998, Scotland there, Sweden not, having finished third in our group. Last major qualification for us, but Sweden have been at more than a few finals since then. Sweden ranked 10 in Europe at the start of the year so would be a terrific achievement to knock their champions out.

  5. Been reading CQN for ages, but finally got my password so I can now post.

Question that has been bothering me for ages. Do Newco or whatever you want to call them have Rangers history? Did they have to give this up?

Also on this subject has there actually been any official word about this?

    Thanks

  7. Hail Hail one and all nice to see the transfer rumours are now going into overdrive.I love the transfer windows, whose coming whos not ,whos granny was told that its a definate goer.Much smiling at everyones opinions and suggestions keep it up lads we dont get much information here in oz so much appreciated

  8. I’ve got my ticket for tomorrow night but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to go yet. Mrs Craiginho is heavily pregnant and I would never live it down if Mini Craiginho was born while I was at CP!

Glad we are thinning down the squad and I hope we dont see a splurge of cheap signings towards the end of the week who could stunt the development of Watt, McGeough, Fraser etc. That being said I would like a couple of quality first team ready signings.

If Willy Bolly (wasn’t there a 60s song of that name??) is as good he sounds then he would be the CB we drastically need. Shipping out Kelvin Wilson would be good if we could.

If Bangura and Murphy leave then I think we need at least one quality striker. Rhodes may be outwith our price range but he does look promising. I just hope we stick with the young, ambitious and affordable approach which has reaped Kayal, Izaguirre, Ledley and Wanyama.

Mon the hoops and bring that Champions League music back to Celtic Park!

    Mmmm ——–

Juve have offered 30 million Euros for Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic . Manchester City are said to be willing to pay more – He is a fabulous player .

    But ——-

He was heavily linked with Inter when The Special One was there. Asked about the interest -The Special One said——.

” If it is only about the football , I’d sign him in a second – but – I’m not sure that even I could manage a man whose brain is one part Paul Gascoine, one part Ballotelli, one part Antonio Cassano and one part Joey Barton “.

That looks like an incoming amount of cash around 7M as we must have got something for Juarez.

That number of players must save the club 100K a week.

    Good business.

    Now for the team.

Had been very interested to see how Bangura fared with us, given that he was recommended by Henrik who knows a bit about striking. Tin hat on here, but I think he was unlucky with injury and then performances were affected as he was way to keen to score a goal – very evident at the weekend I thought, when he was dreadful.

I think the emergence of Watt has basically pushed him out the door. Ah well. Good luck, Mo.

  16. “The home form is good, and the players have the bit between their teeth,” he said as he contemplated the quantum leap success tomorrow would represent in so many ways.

“We know that Helsingborgs are good opponents and made life very difficult for us in Sweden.

“But we are at home now, and it will be a different kettle of fish for them coming to Parkhead.

“If we can get on the front foot and get the crowd going, I think it would be a difficult night for any team.” NL

  17. MMM think Mo is for the highjump, didnt see much potential there when he played in fact the word diddy came to mind

I don’t think there is one in that list that we will miss. I rated Ki but he could never be said to have established himself in our team.

  21. In which I look at how little in the management philosophy of Ally McCoist seems to have changed over the last twelve months, even after all the upheaval there has been.

We travel by way of Napoleon’s soldiers failing to spike Wellington’s guns, Whittaker’s ball throwing and Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s prescience, from defeat in Malmo in August 2011 to a draw in Berwick in August 2012.

We also consider Mr McCoist’s attempts to build the biggest first team squad in Scottish football, and whether he is still trying to be an SPL manager in the rather different terrain of the SFL3.
