The rascal Neil Lennon

771

What a rascal that Neil Lennon is, laughing off interest in Amido Balde while leading us all down the Kevin Doyle road last week, then Amido pitches up at Celtic Park, complete with obligatory Celtic scarf, before heading for some scans and time plugged -up with on the running machine today.

Amido’s road to Celtic Park has not been straight.  He was released by Sporting Lisbon last year without kicking a ball for them, but he has spent a year in a competitive league playing against some Champions League defences, so Celtic will have a fair idea of what kind of player he is.

Does he have the technique?  Does he have the physique?  Does he have the temperament?   John Park and the scouts will have given Neil Lennon lots of information on these elements of Amido, so there should be no surprises.

This is even more true of Balde than of last season’s twin striking signings, Lassad and Miku (trivia question of the future, Who led the line for Celtic when they beat Barcelona in 2012?).  Both arrived in the final days of the window, with options expiring all around and beggars choosing.

As always, the most important hope for any transfer window is that the manager and scouts get their first choices.  That assured, we’ll do alright.

11 June and first piece of transfer speculation. Held the tide as long as I could.

We have a special Father’s Day offer for the Willie Wallace book.  Order between now and Thursday morning and we’ll include a Father’s Day card, complete with your own message. See the big graphic to the right..

Had a look at the seating plan on the official website. I am really impressed with the lack of seats still remaining. A great move by the Club in reducing the prices. I’ve already spent £60 of my £100 saving in the Superstore and I imagine others in a position to do so will do the same. Well done the Board!

Posted similar last night, asked if there was someone who could put up an e-mail link same as when green brigade got kettled? don’t seem many interested?

“Science may have found a cure for most evils, but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all the apathy of human beings.”

  3. As Wispy is probably now coming to the end of his holiday back hame I have a couple of observations/questions to make.

The night he signed the now deid team had a credible away 0-0 tie with Borussia Dortmond giving them a 2-1 aggregate victory.

And yet that night the headlines were of Celtic signing Hearts international forward Willie Wallace, yes the Big Mhan had once again knocked them off the front pages.

The reason I said forward as that’s what Wispy was, a one man forward line. Roll on 4 months and he was replacing the injured Bobby Murdoch at right half in the Scottish Cup Semi and Replay against the Bully Wee, he starred in both games for the ‘tic while Harry Hood was starring for Clyde.

2 weeks later he had replaced the injured Jinky for the defeat of the current World Cup Winners, wee bit unsure about this but I believe he played on the right wing……mibbees BRT&H or WC can ask him about this.

Another question for our likely lhads, when Willie signed for us I had heard at the time that Jock cautioned him on his fitness level stressing that he might be Tynecastle fit but was not up to Celtic Park fitness and would have to work on this, as a result he mibbees have to wait a wee bit for his 1st team debut.

As it was due to injuries he made his debut 4 days later at CP against the Sheep and although he didn’t score he did bag a brace the following week at Firhill. Now the question is, is that true about Jock questioning his fitness level.

Finally, the last time I saw Wispy play was in a Scottish Cup quarter final tie at Boagheid (as the locals called it), Willie was playing for the Sons along with John Cushley and a young Tom McAdam while Pat McCluskey (who would later move to Dumbarton) was in our side. We also had Andy Lynch playing striker as Jock strived to find a position for the struggling left winger.

Anyway back to the game, Willie spent a good part of it winding our young talisman forward up that dreich day and at one point a red faced Kenny turned round to throw a punch at him, at the right precise moment big Cush grabbed Kenny’s hand and pulled him away probably saving his fledgling career. Wispy, he just trotted away.

Now there are a couple of gems in there.

I don’t want to give too much away here as folk are either still reading the book or are going to take it on their holidays.

I can confirm that Willie did indeed play right wing at Wembley instead of Jimmy — and played very well so much so that one report said that the best three Scots afield were Law, Wallace and Lennox.

There are one or two points you make that I will ask him about — though I had heard the Cushley story before—- though not from Willie.

And as for Willie winding up a young Kenny?

Well a certain Mr Auld has suggested that Willie was among the biggest wind up merchants of all time!
