They want to get rid of him

730

‘They’ want to get rid of him.  Not all of them, by any measure, I’ve seen Neil Lennon welcomed as an old friend by some whose allegiances lie a long way from Celtic Park, but to some he represents an opportunity to indulge in the kind of prejudice which was once widely accepted in Scotland.

In this instance I’m not talking about the idiot football fans, there are lots of idiot football fans, just waiting for an opportunity to present their credentials.  You can meet them wearing any colours.  The people who showed their true colours today were in charge of stewarding guests at Tynecastle – and Neil Lennon was a guest.

It’s a horrible place.  The day the flats are built cannot come soon enough. I expect a robust response from Aberdeen, as well as life bans. I expect nothing from Hearts.

16 Roads, is Belfast really the ‘hate city’ of Europe? Are you sure about that?

    —————————————

It seems to be, if you believe what you see on the news everyday, that is.

16 Roads, do you think that some of the Protestant community in the North of Ireland perhaps have some hatred because of the actions of IRA? Humans aren’t any different. Hate breeds hate. Some of your community may hate the British because of Bloody Sunday. Is that more natural hate than the hate that a Protestant may feel towards Republicans?

    ———————————————–

    There is no IRA mate.

If peepil so wish to hate the IRA of old, then fair enough.

But I dare say that the old IRA were not made up of ethnic minorities and immigrants.

    They hate everybody, and everything.

Hate this hate that and hate the other.

Nobody does hate quite like they do.

    Extraordinary it is.

  2. As a Weedgie Celtic supporter living in Aberdeen who attends Pittodrie on a regular basis here ‘a my take on it…

There is an ever present ant Central belt culture that bubbles away. This is underpinned by an inferiority complex as Aberdeen in general is a less developed City and there is a historical political bias towards Edinburgh Glasgow. This is changing as the city and it’s people take confidence in the fact Aberdeen is the economic power house of the country through its association with oil and gas. It is a city that is essentially Presbyterian but not overtly ant catholic. There are only a few catholic schools and they are held in fairly high regard. So I would say the anti- Lennon behaviour is not fundamentally a sectarian issue. It is more a manifestation of hating Glasgow… This will be reinforced in the unsophisticated minds of those perpetrating this by the fact that they now consider themselves the second team in Scotland and will view Lennon as the leader of their rivals. Ludicrous as they are only the current cream of the also rans. Add to the above that this was almost certainly the behaviour of 40- something year old ex casuals reliving their youth on a day when they will have been tanked up and were no doubt buoyed by their teams success and I can see it as it happened.

I don’t think therefore it is accurate to paint Aberdeen or it’s general fan base as sectarian. Anti Glasgow- yes. Unsophisticated – yes. Likely to be a drunken minority – yes.

Should fans be targetted and arrested for singing roll of honour?

    Absolutely not.

There is no crime being committed.

    Will i download it?

Probably. Would be good to see it in the charts.

Would I sing it at celtic park?

    No.

It ‘s not a celtic song.

I’ve never understood why people regard a bill of rights as a progressive measure as, in practice, what it would mean is that matters would be decided by judges rather than politicians.

For all their faults I’d rather take my chance with politicians, at least they are subject to a degree of democratic control.

Totally agree with your post, that’s one of the reasons I get angry at the demonisation of the GB.

Too many fans swallow the pash that’s drip fed to them, it’s time to stand up and be accountable for what you believe is right.

For me that’s all the GB did and if that is not acceptable…we really do have a problem within our society.

  6. Ernie, thanks for responding. I look forward to your daily criticism of such bigots. They are afterall more dangerous to the Catholic way of life than Sam and Billy from Glasgow are. By the way, I am not a Nat! Of course I acknowledge Scotland’s history. However, Scotland is no different to any other country.

16 Roads, I understand that there is no ‘IRA’ but their past actions still affect the present day. The actions of Loyalists and the British still also affect the present. Anyway, I won’t continue with this angle.

  7. Not only that, they began to implicate Neil Lennon for retaliation in the Hearts assault.

I’m calling for Celtic to go for our own ‘broad brush’ tactic. if it’s good enough for Celtic fans that misbehave it’s better than good enough for Aberdeen thugs.

This is not a first there were Celtic fans injured in the Lisbon Lions stand at the last Aberdeen game.

Why is our club passive this time, ban them and say why they are banned.

Irish people were swinging the axe at one another, long before Saxon, Dane, Norman or Scottish planter even set foot on this place.

They probably did like to fight.

    But this hatred caper ffs?

The Viking, Norman and even the Saxon – They all assimilated through time – the Scottish planted population never did, and still haven’t.

Bigotry and hatred is all they bring to the table, they are an absolute blight.

    I will say no more.

Do you think there’s ever been a problem of anti Irish Catholic bigotry in Scotland?

  10. Kitalba, to answer your question, both sides have to acknowledge their faults. I know that that is a very bland statement which is devoid of originality but that is what I believe. The alternative is to remain hating one another. As I understand from your previous posts, that is something which would not appeal to you.

  11. As for Aberdeen fans songs… I think this charge will not hold water in court. 20 years of going to Pittodrie tells me they have no songs. The occasional chant… But fundamentally a poor silent support.

  12. Let me introduce another wee analogy, totally hypothetical…

Had Hitler invaded in the ‘40’s and conquered Britain, and a resistance movement was born and fought the oppressors, and the resistance movement prevailed by every brutal means it could employ, how would history today acclaim that resistance after freedom was achieved?

When the Guardianistas start sending bullets and bombs to prominent Celtic supporters I’ll monitor their activities.

At the moment they’re not doing that.

Am I right to think that while you accept that Scotland did at one time have a problem with anti Irish Catholic bigotry that is no longer the case?

When do you reckon the problem ended?

You’ve been listening to Dev’s radio broadcast.

  15. The refs are under instruction to book any Celtic player who runs into the crowd after we score. It’s as clear as day and an easy yellow for the Establishment.

As for the player in Turkey, anyone think it was Buruk Yilmaz?

  16. I largely agree with I paddy from earlier. We need to be careful not to overreact to this.

John o’neill firstly I hope you are well?

You are of course correct about bigotry around the world. But I think you are underplaying it here in Scotland. Beneath the thin veneer of respectability lies a hatred of Catholics. I have experienced it personally as have many others. If you don’t want to believe that then look at the way official figures where, ahem, lost or destroyed. Or look at the prison statistics big nan referred to last night. And what has our scottish government done (either SNP or labour)? Well they have ignored it, lied about it, lost it. But not actually tackled it. Why? Because beneath the thin veneer is institutional sectarianism. I believe the police force is staunchly sectarian and would love to know how much of the police force comprises of Catholics (big nan have you asked that one yet?). Part of the OB act was to mask these figures and part of it was good old fashioned racism.

I know you try and find the good john. But be careful in Scotland.

As for the pro Nats who claim we are strange bedfellows with unionists when it comes to independence. You are correct but we are anti independence for very different reasons. Just because a unionist doesn’t want independence doesn’t make me just want to do the opposite. Wouldn’t that be very silly?

  17. Ernie, apologies for not using the present simple tense. I believe it still exists but it is nowhere near as widespread as it once was. The Guardianistas haven’t yet sent bombs to Catholics. However, their vitriol and bile could lead to attacks against Catholics. Do you challenge the anti-Catholic sentiments of the Socialists?

    Yes.

I don’t think the society is racist though.

But if you wish to equate that with the issue being discussed here say so explicitly, so we can properly understand your mindset.

  19. From the BBC website………..

Celtic’s Neil Lennon suffers spitting and coin-throwing.

Aberdeen and Celtic have condemned fans whose behaviour forced the Glasgow club’s manager, Neil Lennon, to leave Saturday’s League Cup semi-final early.

The 42-year-old was spat at, had coins thrown at him and was the subject of verbal abuse in the Tynecastle stand, according to his agent, Martin Reilly.

He had been a spectator as Aberdeen defeated St Johnstone 4-0.

Both Celtic and Aberdeen, whose fans were in the main stand, described the behaviour as “unacceptable”.

“We would urge anyone who has any information as to the identity of those responsible to get in touch with the club”

    Aberdeen Football Club

The Dons, who reached their first cup final since 2000, pleaded for supporters to report those responsible.

“The support we enjoyed at Tynecastle was absolutely fantastic and helped to create an incredible atmosphere that the manager and players acknowledged played a major part in what was wonderful day and occasion for Aberdeen Football Club,” said a statement on their club website.

“However, it would appear that a tiny minority within the main stand behaved in a manner that is completely unacceptable and has absolutely no place in football.

“And we would urge anyone who has any information as to the identity of those responsible to get in touch with the club in order that appropriate action can be taken.”

Reilly told BBC Scotland that Lennon and Celtic coach Gary Parker had to leave their seats in the main stand after 70 minutes of the game.

“I’m absolutely raging about the treatment of Neil, about the stewarding and the fans’ behaviour,” he said.

“It’s scandalous that Neil is treated like this.”

“We have an excellent relationship with Aberdeen Football Club and we are sure they will look into this matter”

    Celtic spokesman

Play was also held up briefly as two young supporters ran on to the park and got to the technical area before being apprehended by police and stewards.

Lennon was sitting in the main stand, which housed Aberdeen fans on Saturday, yards above the technical area where he was infamously attacked by a Hearts fan in 2011, at Tynecastle.

The Celtic manager walked out of the stadium in Edinburgh shortly after Adam Rooney scored the third goal in the 62nd minute.

A Celtic spokesman said: “Clearly it is totally unacceptable for the Celtic manager to be treated in this way.

“Neil has complimented the way in which the situation was handled by stewarding staff at Tynecastle.

“We have an excellent relationship with Aberdeen Football Club and we are sure they will look into this matter.”

Seems like the stewarding, according to Lenny was okay…..

  20. Thanks Neganon. I am well thanks. The move was successful.

The destruction of the statistics was disgraceful and an affront to transparency. Like yourself, I would probably not vote for separation but not because I fear for Catholics. 22. John O’Neil:

I am very anti-hate, and from your last post you have obviously been reading some of mine. I believe to achieve the best non hate society (I don’t believe it is possible to achieve a hate free society) then the first step is to acknowledge the truth of history and atrocities past. Then it comes down to education, the truth educated, then equality in society, then faith in the human spirit. But to deny prejudice and oppression is not to cure hate. To cure hate you must first accept it exists and then identify it then understand why it grew. And then make it a crime to feed it.

I don’t hate the huns, I hate the failure of elected and highly paid public employees to make inroads into the hate and then I ask why can’t they, is there a masonic wall opposing them? I don’t know John, I don’t know the answer, or answers, but I do know that opposing hate with hate will solve nothing. Maybe an appeal to the people, a referendum for transparency of all public employees, before elected to office?

    I don’t know.

But I do know this… at the cost of cells bars… or the grave.

Yeah a bill of rights will make it all better. Didn’t the US have something like that but yet many within it’s population are still openly (for want of a better term) discriminated against. A bill of rights is a good idea written on a bit of paper that is all. A willingness to implement it is what is required. The banning of all OO and Republican marches in Scotland neither having anything to do with Scotland. Having to openly declare if you are a member of a secret fraternity (Masons etc etc) before being allowed to hold public office, judiciary, Police etc. Now that would be a start.

The old Romans had the right idea when it came to Ireland – They took one look at the place and said – thanks, but no thanks, think we shall stay well away from that land.
