They want to get rid of him

‘They’ want to get rid of him.  Not all of them, by any measure, I’ve seen Neil Lennon welcomed as an old friend by some whose allegiances lie a long way from Celtic Park, but to some he represents an opportunity to indulge in the kind of prejudice which was once widely accepted in Scotland.

In this instance I’m not talking about the idiot football fans, there are lots of idiot football fans, just waiting for an opportunity to present their credentials.  You can meet them wearing any colours.  The people who showed their true colours today were in charge of stewarding guests at Tynecastle – and Neil Lennon was a guest.

It’s a horrible place.  The day the flats are built cannot come soon enough. I expect a robust response from Aberdeen, as well as life bans. I expect nothing from Hearts.

‘Ernie, is there any country which is free from prejudice?’

    ####

    I don’t know.

I do know that Scotland has a particular type of prejudice.

I’m sensitive to it because the community I come from is affected by the prejudice.

Maybe if I was from a different background I wouldn’t be aware of the prejudice or might chose to ignore it, particularly if I though those who mentioned it were somehow denigrating me or my culture.

Big Nan, McCormack’s party existed in an age long ago. I suggest that Catholics face problems from a different source now.

    ……………………………….

Thanks for telling me I am of a different age.

So the sons and grandsons of those indoctrinated with anti-Irish/RC propaganda are born with no biases that are present today you reckon?

    And such is life indeed.

I have a few boasts in life myself…

I never, ever watched Dallas, or Eastenders, or Coronation St, or any of them… none of them, EVER.

I’ve never ever said a word on here that I would not say to another posters face that I addressed.

I’m from Glasgow. Never in my life of wandering have I ever come across a city I’d rather be – by myself – than Glasgow.

I’m a Celtic Supporter. A simple one, but hopefully as committed as the man on my shoulder, both left and right.

  4. You don’t know Ernie? Well that is a first. Let me suggest to you that all countries have prejudice. It would be a little odd, if not a form of prejudice itself, were we to only attribute prejudice to the Scottish people. Given that you are from an Irish Catholic community, I look forward to your highlighting the daily bigotry which one can find on various newspaper websites.

It’s almost like there’s something you’d rather we didn’t deal with.

    I wonder why?

  9. Big Nan, I was going to write ‘with respect’ but nobody takes those words seriously anymore. I think there is some residual bias but it is dying away. Most people pity Orangemen and other bigots. The more worrying bigotry emanates from the intellectual circles.

Your post about the young Coatbridge girl was very moving.

Heading off through to game hoping we don’t see a surprise result – even Barca lost at home yesterday after a long winning run!

Can’t watch much more of this ICT v Hertz drivel anyway. The sheep will pump either of these two teams in the final. Right on cue, ICT score a raker (genius ??? according to BBC)!

I’ll stick to football if that’s ok. Off oot.

  11. Ernie, given that you don’t know that a form of bigotry exists in every country known to man, I think we can safely deduce that you haven’t left your house much.

Unlike you I haven’t visited every country in the world and don’t have enough knowledge about them to speak with any authority.

Or maybe you just didn’t express yourself particularly clearly in your original question.

  18. The Battered Bunnet on

To the vexing matter of Lenny yesterday at Tynecastle.

There’s been a lot said and written, some in anger, some in ignorance, some insightful, some disingenuous.

I was particularly upset with last night’s Sportsound Extra, with Graham Spiers using a public platform to express the view that Neil Lennon attracts this sort of behaviour.

I was minded of the long held, now widely discredited axiom that a given woman subjected to sexual assault brought it on herself on account of her clothing and make up. What did she expect after all? Indeed, the Jezebel association, the ‘painted woman’ metaphor is perhaps still quite at home in the legacy of Scotland’s centuries old struggle with itself.

Neil Lennon was not abused yesterday because he is Catholic.

Neither was he abused because he is Irish.

Or indeed, that he’s a ginger.

He is all of these things of course.

Neil Lennon was abused yesterday because a number of hooligans, thugs and reprobates thought it was acceptable to behave in that way.

In attempting to provide a reason for the behaviour, Spiers serves to condone or mitigate it. Perhaps he doesn’t realise.

Relatedly: I have a lot of fondness for Aberdeen, from John Hewitt’s silent scream in Gothenburg, to my son’s 4 years spent at the club and much besides.

However, I had cause to criticise their support following the most recent game at Celtic Park, and again yesterday. The supporters will have to decide whether their mission is to take Rangers’ place in Scottish football, or become them. I’m sure Orwell had an apt allegory of sheep becoming farmers…

How many Celtic fans have Stephen Fry and his chums murdered for no other reason than a perceived football allegiance?

  20. Ernie, have a wee think and you can suggest some places where bigotry does not exist within humans. One suspects that you will be thinking for a long time. If you do discover a utopia where some form of prejudice does not exist, let us know. You could even move there if Scotland votes yes.

  21. Kojo,

The voice of reason, and I can appreciate your sentiments.

.Unfortunately the political debate in these islands is encapsulating all things Football. There is no escape from politics and football intertwining. This will only increase in the run up to the referendum.

However you live 6000 miles away

  22. Ernie, thankfully his friends aren’t in power. Give them that power and history shows that they start to have fun killing priests and others with faith. Sammy from Armadale isn’t going to influence public opinion.

Scotland has its own, endogenous bigotry.

    It directly affects me.

    I’m concerned about it.

I will not vote for something that will make it worse by giving the bigots a louder voice.

  24. Kojo,

Apologies for incomplete post. I was finishing by saying as you live 6000 miles away it is difficult to gauge these uncharted times in Scotland.

Sad as it is we are all being sucked in.

    Thanks and HH to you.
