They want to get rid of him

730

‘They’ want to get rid of him.  Not all of them, by any measure, I’ve seen Neil Lennon welcomed as an old friend by some whose allegiances lie a long way from Celtic Park, but to some he represents an opportunity to indulge in the kind of prejudice which was once widely accepted in Scotland.

In this instance I’m not talking about the idiot football fans, there are lots of idiot football fans, just waiting for an opportunity to present their credentials.  You can meet them wearing any colours.  The people who showed their true colours today were in charge of stewarding guests at Tynecastle – and Neil Lennon was a guest.

It’s a horrible place.  The day the flats are built cannot come soon enough. I expect a robust response from Aberdeen, as well as life bans. I expect nothing from Hearts.

  1. No Ernie, I just want to challenge 16 Water’s assertion that 99% of hate stems from one community. Moreover, why is Ireland not a racist country? If you assert that Scotland is a sectarian society due to the actions of a minority then why is Ireland not a racist society because of the actions of a minority? I guess that you will say that Scotland’s problem isn’t because of a minority but I would disagree.

Could you also tell me how many Catholics have been leaders of Scotland’s largest council? Could you then tell me how that is possible in such a sectarian society? That may be a common argument but it does have validity.

Neil’s agent not as complimentary about the stewarding:

Martin Reilly said “I’m absolutely raging about the treatment of Neil, about the stewarding and the fans behaviour.”

“For those of us who want to build a better society a yes vote gives us greater opportunity to build that society. For those on here opposed to that you are welcome to stand by your friends who fly the Union Flag, Sing God Save the Queen with fervour, and give “Red Hand” salutes. Strange bedfellows indeed!”

An excellent post ruined by the ridiculous statement above.

As ridiculous as this equivalent statement :- For those on here who want separatism then you are welcome to stand by the racist anti English, anti catholic SNP who have never had a catholic as a minister in their entire history. Indeed they actually had an anti popery message and voted with Thatcher.

Both statements are rubbish and can be manipulated to suit any agenda.

The issue of Scotland’s independence is too important for point scoring and should be debated rationally on economic matters etc.

    HH. Always in Celtic.

  4. Ernie, I don’t play down any threat. That would be an insult to the victims of sectarian crimes in Glasgow. I just challenge that the problem is as big as you say it is.

‘The Guardian’ is a fine newspaper but its contributors often make vicious comments about Catholics. This is seldom mentioned on CQN. That is why I mentioned it. That is my agenda.

Fans Against Criminalisation are delighted to announce plans to release the single ‘’Roll of Honour’’ in association with The Irish Brigade for the duration of the week beginning on 8th of February. This single will be available for download on iTunes. We would like to thank the band for kindly allowing us to use their song to help aid our campaign against the criminalisation of football supporters and the suppression of political expression.

Download the Roll of Honour any time in the week 8 -15 February inclusive and let’s get it into the UK Top 40 Singles Charts and embarrass the hypocrites who seek to criminalise us.

This particular song is a ballad about civil resistance and a struggle for basic human rights and it has been a favourite of the Celtic support for over a decade. Shamefully, the SNP’s Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act has resulted in the song becoming a target for Police Scotland and numerous arrests have been made as a result. From its outset FAC has sought to oppose this discriminatory piece of legislation and to defend the rights of football supporter’s which have been continually eroded since the Act’s introduction.

We call on the Celtic family from all corners of the globe to support this campaign by downloading the single to help raise funds to aid the legal costs of those whose lives are being torn apart by this disgracefully illiberal law and to help further publicise the hypocrisy inherent within the government’s position.

I have opposed bigotry in every shape and form for all my adult life and will continue to do so when ever it raises its ugly face.

I do believe that Scotland and the rest of the UK has had an anti-Irish Catholic problem but it is 1000 times better now than at the turn of the last century.

Have I experienced anti-Irish Catholic Bigotry personally – well apart from being attacked and assaulted by Rangers fans whilst on the way home from Celtic Park then NO. I am not Irish Catholic which I assume your question was referring to although my dearly departed Gran was and many of my family are. My grandparents being part of a mixed marriage in the 1930s. Can you imagine the problems they faced?

I completely dispute that the OO’s influence would grow in an independent Scotland.

  16. Morning all

Just been reading the blog there. Some excellent posts from IPaddy McCourt, John O’Neil, Cults Bhoy, 16 Roads and others.

I do not know Aberdeen that well but from what I do know of it I’d be surprised if the treatment handed out to Neil was uniformly sectarian – though the blind eyes that were turned will have been. I have lived in Edinburgh – did so on and off for 24 years- and know that Neil Lennon is disliked , hated even, for more than sectarian reasons. On the field he was hated because he was ‘in yer face’, good at what he did and worst of all, perhaps, clearly he was articulate and not an idiot. Nobody except Celtic fans didn’t loathe him. I worked beside Catholics who supported other teams and they hated him. I do not know the motivation of those who abused him yesteday but I’ve been around drunken overgrown schoolboys often enough to know that if they know they can get away with something they’ll do it. I suspect – but do not know- that this loutishness was the main motivation behind yesterday’s disgrace.

This is not to say that I do not believe that there isn’t a substantial streak of anti- Catholic , anti- Irish bigotry in Scotland away from the more obvious centres of it in Glasgow and all points west of about Bathgate and as far north as Stirling. When I came to Edinburgh in 1981 I was astonished that my co – religionists were referred to as ‘papes’, ‘Fenians’, ‘left footers’, ‘hairy backs’ routinely. When I said I was Catholic there was no apology for the bigoted remarks but a certain astonishment that I was reasonably smart, clean, intelligent and thought of myself as being Scottish. I got used to it I suppose but always over those years there would be jarring moments when I encountered bigotry – and racism- that showed me that the old prejudices were alive and well and working in fairly plush Edinburgh offices.

Sorry to ramble on but in some way yesterday’s events seem even more depressing than those of three years ago. I fear that a touchpaper has been lit. Dangerous moments ahead.

  17. John O’Neil:

Take the word Nazi out of the equation, it is evocative, (but if it was to be left in it would only serve my wee point) my wee point is simply this, if a bigger, more aggressive, bellicose, bullying nation comes into your country and takes what was yours, are you a demon, a terrorist, a thug, to stand against it?

After that my point gets into the realms of generations down the centuries and implanted cultures being understood beyond hate, but never forgetting the root cause of the problem.

So to repeat my assertion, I think the British Crown is responsible for today’s hate, do you?

That is twice I’ve asked the question, I’d rather you answered it an not deflect for my life is too short to be wasted on drivel.

You have to remember there are two companies. RIFC (which had the ipo) and TRFC (the clumpany). RIFC raised the IPO dosh, TRFC spent it. TRFC will owe RIFC for the IPO money it has spent. It would be clearer if TRFC published accounts but they dont have to do so until May. RIFC will claim the money spent as debt, relieve TRFC of it’s property assets and become a very profitable property leasing company with one client signed up to a long term onerous lease including paying for upkeep after it sells TRFC (probably for a pound) to ra bares next saviour.

S’cuse the ignorance -would that not have been indicated in the clumpany’s accounts which were audited etc. ?

    It was.

p25 of the Accounts of RIFC accounts shows £16.163m ‘Amounts due from subsidiary undertakings’ . There is a Note(15) on p59 which goes on to explain that the “Amounts due to RIFC from The Rangers Football Club Ltd represents the proceeds of the Initial Public Offering less costs incurred in the fundraising. The net funds from this activity have been made available to the subsidiary as working capital.”

I think people are going to be disappointed if they expect a drawn out administration. The way I see how this is going to go down, will be a quick and relatively bloodless. The spivs will ensure that there are little to no external liabilities or debts and no cash left. Basically what is owed will be owed to RIFC and RIFC alone. RIFC simply take the assets for the debt and with no external creditors they’ll have a free run at it. A friendly administrator will be appointed and TRFC will be sold sans assets to a pre nominated bidder (King?) who will have already agreed the terms of the lease. TRFC might take that opportunity to cut costs significantly (letting players and staff go) but that depends on who comes in.

Alternatively it could be a bloodbath where the spivs don’t have a buyer lined up to purchase TRFC out of administration, and are simply happy to take the assets knowing whoever comes in will have to deal with them or find somewhere else to play. That could get messy. There will be absolutely no funds to sustain the business when it goes under so if the administration takes time then all bets are off. The only certainty in the whole shebang is that either administration or a takeover is coming (there is no danger of them being able to cut costs without it, and no-one will touch a new share issue to fund the business) and that RIFC will end up a property company with Ibrox, the training centre, the car park and associated buildings. TRFC will either be bought or go completely under.

I’m not tearing into our fans, quite the contrary.

I’m tearing into sad cunts who use football crowds as an opportunity to do things they would get a fucking kicking for if the did them in any other situation. That’s regardless what group of fans they are within but includes our own.

There’s been quite a lot of it in all clubs supports this season it seems. The more I see it the more I realise you can’t judge a whole teams support by the actions of a few.

I don’t support Aberdeen because I share the same politic, religious or philosophical ideology as the person next to me at game. I support Aberdeen because they are my team. There’s no collective responsibility within a group of fans of any team – because folk are there of their own free will to do their own thing, not to endorse the views or behaviour of anyone else.

With that outlook I don’t feel any shame or embarrassment if some dons fans are cunts – it’s not my fault or responsibility.

It’s also easier to see what’s wrong and say so without being defensive about it.

Just heard about this alleged incident. I was sitting just behind Lennon and saw absolutely nothing of note. Didnt actually realise he was sitting next to me until half time.

If something did happen it certainly wasnt as big a deal as the press are making out. There was also no Police presence.

My sister and her fiancée were sitting around that area as well. They said there was abuse aimed at him but it was mostly just calling him a wanker. No surprise to see the embarrassment that is George Galloway getting involved.

I’ve no idea about that jigot but this is football, these are just rivals in a game we love.

Spitting or throwing coins at someone is both really cowardly, feeble and also disgusting.

If people had some genuine reason to hate the guy maybe they should have the balls to offer him a square go instead of hiding in a crowd fobbing and what not.

Its cunts like that deserve abuse not some footballer manager.

    Except for the abuse.

It seems to me that the whole thing turns on the condition of the stadium.

Does it require major investment imminently? I can’t see a tenant being able to take it on if it does.

  24. FFin’ panic, paranoia and pandemonium as the news of the report to the Stock Exchange penetrates their domes:

“This has just spoiled my morning, when will this s@!t end.”

    ——

“FFS. Let’s hear the official statement then. The board better be rubbishing this article. Although with the benefit of hindsight, asking players to take a wage cut, sacking Stockbridge, could make you think there is no smoke without fire.”

    ——

“Stockbridge just came right into my head like a Thunderbolt.”

    ——

“We’d be deducted 25 points for administration.

    How so?

Where does it say that in the Rule Book?

    Point me to that rule.”

    ——

“So how come we were quoted with a 24 point blooter and a points differential’ from last season?

I’ve never heard of this in my puff.

You go into Admin#2 and we will deduct you the points you won last season with?

How can you deduce a points deduction against a league division that is well below the station you are currently at?”

    ——

“Can anyone enlighten me on the club owing the company money ? I’m not sure I follow this situation.”

    ——

“The club (TRFC) will be in debt to the company (RIFC).”

    ——

“Because the IPO and ST monies go to the company which then funds the club. So I think what is being said is that the club owes the company a fortune.”

    ——

“Why do people still not get this.

Who has no debts, the PLC (holding company) or the Ltd Company (club).

I’m afraid people have been falling for the spin on this one for way too long. The PLC has no debts that I am aware of, however it’s subsidiary, the limited company has millions in debts, probably tens of millions by now.

It’s no different from the situation with Craig Whyte. The club owed a fortune to the PLC which owned it.”

    ——

“Don’t believe this for a second.

Tims have been contacting the stock exchange for a while. They were even writing letters to Notingham Forest about offering less for Wallace due to our financial situation FFS.”

    ——

The calm head of the Sevcomedian, however, identifies the solution:

“I expect the club will react with a stern official statement asap.”
