This is a dead football club

899

We are five days away from the end of the season, Duff and Phelps have spent 10 weeks trying to solicit an offer for the assets of the company and the only one they were in a position to consider has now been withdrawn.

The stadium remains in Craig Whyte’s hands.

The SPL has not offered a place in the league.

The players can choose to become free agents on Sunday.

Duff and Phelps have no money to pay anyone or anything after 31 May.

Are you getting the picture?

Whatever ‘good news’ Duff and Phelps come out with later, or ‘Rangers to benefit from Miller withdrawal’ you read about tomorrow, not one piece of positive news has gone Rangers way in weeks.

This is a dead football club. If there was an accountancy term beyond liquidation, perhaps uber-liquidation, they would be uber-liquidated (there’s not, but if this gets any worse the English language will need some re-work).

Yesterday’s delay was the most complete confirmation possible, for anyone still harbouring doubt, today’s message from Miller should be no surprise to Celtic Quick News readers.

Miller’s parting shot:

“After hearing the message from Rangers supporters and fans loud and clear (“Yank go home!”), I notified the administrators today that I have withdrawn my bid for Rangers”.

…has the makings of a topic for a business doctorate, if anyone is looking for one.  I’d elaborate but reckon we’re all a little carried away at the moment for serious debate.

The histrionics since yesterday and, if you don’t mind me saying, lack of appreciation of these historic times, would dishonour teenage girls (no offense teenage girls).

Please stop with all the silliness, indignation and faux trauma.  Some football supporters have real issues to worry about.

    Tock……

Paul67 – excellent stuff, well said and well done.

The Rangers penchant for threats & intimidation – never far aware in times of even mild adversity over the years, never mind in truly Apocalyptic times – has come back to haunt them.

What is it about them that has casual onlookers (neither Celtic nor Rangers people) grimacing, shaking their heads and saying that Craig Whyte does not know what he’s got himself into…..he’ll end up “taking a bullet…..”.

There’s almost a tacit acceptance in Scotland that if you cross them in a serious way, you will “get it.” And possibly deserve what you get for your stupidity….

The McCoist & Jardine utterings did absolutely nothing to quell these attitudes, and were grossly irresponsible. If Celtic people behaved this way in public we would be hung out to dry by the media. I can well imagine the eager vitriol of Leckie, Waddell etc.

There are people serving on SFA or SPL boards that have received death threats – not just to their high profile places of work, or to the SPL/SFA offices, but to their home addresses.

The same mentality that kicked a Manchester policeman to near death, and slit the throat of a young Celtic supporter is alive and well.

    And dangerous.

But you never know…..possibly in it’s own death throes.

    God speed that.

I agree but it is not sleepwalking it is a deliberate attempt by those responsible for governing football to justify avoiding doing the very thing they are supposed to do.

My take on things is the SFA/UEFA.s job is to act as a check against commercialism overriding integrity, but if they are not prepared to do so they have no purpose, should be removed and leagues can run their own franchise.

This is the risk uefa take by standing back.

If we accept that UEFA will not interfere, that the SFA and SPL will bend and break every regulation, and the signs are they are willing to do just that, isn’t this all over bar the shouting? Isn’t it merely a matter of time before someone buys this sorry shower, because with no penalties and the chance to dump all debt, they are, in fact, a good deal? Isn’t this just an admission that we’ve been well beat here?

Im not so sure they are.

If someone steps up to the plate they are getting all the assurances Doncaster cam give them that a) a newco can be voted in and b) it all depends on the hit they are prepared to take to enter.

If the SPL are desperate as they seem then punishments that will weaken a newco are unlikely.

The best bet is Ticketus wanting their money back and HMRC being punitive on the size of the bond they require and their best players saying cheerio and thanks for the fish.

I’ll tell you now, and I mean this sincerely, if the SFA, the SPL and then UEFA all stand back and allow this, in violation of every law, every regulation, every principle, in the face of a gigantic fraud, if clubs are allowed to simply run up debts, die and be reborn, if that precedent is established, I am finished with football.

That is not a knee jerk reaction. I will have to think about what Celtic means to me, as an institution separate from the game in which it takes part, and I will do that, I will consider that, I will think long and hard about that and come to some sort of deal with myself over it … but as far as the game is concerned, I am done with it, as many are done with boxing, as many are done with those other sports which have allowed money to become their only Gods.

Footballers are overpaid. I never minded that, not in the real sense. Clubs spend money they cannot afford. That too seems to be part and parcel of how it all works. But this is legalised fraud against the tax-payer. This is your money, my money, society’s money, being written off … and why?

To get more of your money, my money, and society’s money. To appease the lust of the fans for big games. Games which are not straight, in a game which is corrupt to the marrow of its bones.

You talk about bringing down UEFA, when we have not even been able to hold the people who run the game in this country to proper account. When we have not even been able to get them to rule fairly on our doorstep.

The fact is, the national leagues DO run their own franchise, and this is how ours has chosen to behave. If UEFA endorses it, that’s it for me. There are other things I love. The other great passions of my life, writing fiction, politics, music, they are things I compromise for the sake of this sport … not Celtic, the institution is seperate, to me, from the game, and I will have to explore more fully what that idea means if I turn my back on the game … but the sport itself, I will gladly set aside if it has become a vehicle for this kind of corruption.

James, the reason we still dont have goal line technology and video in football is because FIFA reserve the right to nobble refs in world cups. UEFA follows FIFA and so on and so forth. What are you looking for a chain of dignity or what?

This is not about goal line technology.

Doncaster said to the CSA and CST that in business companies frequently do this kind of thing, and he is correct. it happens all the time. But football has very seperate rules, very distinct rules, and football is not supposed to BE just another business. It is supposed to have, at its core, integrity, honesty, fair play, a level playing field, all the things that make it a great game.

If all of that is cast aside in the next few months, we are not simply consumers to be treated like dirt, we are mugs who DESERVE to be treated like dirt, because the game itself – not one club, not one association, but the game – is bent and you can watch it if you want to, but I don’t want to.

Celtic is more than a football club. It is a social institution, and I will find a way to stay involved in that side of it without paying any heed to the footballing aspect. I will think about how best to do that should I have to make the choice – and it looks increasingly as if I will have to make the choice.

  13. Auld Neil Lennon heid on

    James

It will be an admission that football cannot be trusted to govern itself.

If a club can get away with owing the tax payer say £60m plus, cheating on its fellow league members and depriving its main rival of millions then it is the wild west.

There is a lot more than saving Rangers at stake here.

Uefa might want to stay out of it but I doubt they will be able to without the question about who governs being asked.

Uefa have argued they should govern football, but ffp was forced on them by the eu parliament. If they are seen to be abandoning the means by which uefa govern, club licensing then they have no purpose.

For to get them to intervene this point has to become part of public debate.

In the meantime the cst have to insist no piecemeal decision making is done on a newco application.

Full licensing rules and processes must be applied to protect all clubs, not ignored to favour one.

Its all in the piece I sent CU.

Who is going to ask these questions? Who is going to force UEFA to answer them? Is the suggestion here that we start a brand new letter writing campaign? A massive one directed at UEFA?

Look, people think I am a blowhard and an arrogant opinionated git, with an over-wrought sense of my own importance at times. I look at the length of time I give to these issues, to thinking about them, writing about them, doing exactly the same things as many others are doing. I think about how much of my life is swallowed up by this sport, not just on Celtic, and I despair.

I despair because for all the time I put in, and it’s a lot, there are others who make my own contribution seem minor. And yet, for all of us, for all of our efforts, collective and personal, we have moved this thing forward not one bit in real terms. Our manager is still victimised and vilified for his every statement. Campbell Ogilvie still has a job, and will keep it no matter what. We got Dallas out of the SFA but he found himself a cushy berth in Nyon all the same ….

Our fights with the SFA have yielded a lot of vague promises but no real changes of substance which have brought transparency and fairness nearer one stroke. The cowards of the Scottish press, who brought this crisis on all of Scottish football with their failures to do even the most fundamental parts of their job, still have their positions and still influence more decisions and steer the agenda better than we do or ever will … us “internet bampots”.

I look at every line and word written, by me, by you, by others … and I see us engaged in the Long Defeat, and it is tiring, and wearisome, and there are better ways for me to spend my time and my life.

Yes, I still want to be involved with Celtic, because that institution means everything to me. I will buy the strips, I will attend charitable events. I will donate money to the causes associated with the club. I will support its initiatives in the community, and do what I can to promote them … I will find a way to balance my love for the institution with my total disillusionment from the game.

But honestly, the long struggle of the last four years has been about trying to make sure that some measure of justice was done here. Days like Black Sunday were endured on the understanding that one day an accounting would be made for the cheating and the fraud, and the over-spending … that there would be fairness and balance. And all of it was a nonsense.

When this matter is finally resolved, when it’s put to bed, I will embark on one last writing project … a full accounting of where the resolution of these matters leaves the national sport. People may not want to read it, but the bad experiences I had at university, and the dire tailspin into which it almost sent the course of my life, I got over principally by writing a novel about it all … I have always viewed writing as a cathartic experience …. and if I often seem frustrated and angry on here, well maybe that’s because in person I am much more calm and relaxed, and this is where I sometimes come to vent.

In other words, I will write it (as I write everything) primarily for me, to make sense of how I feel, to clarify what’s in my head and to rid myself of the bad feelings about it. And then I will move on, get back to writing fiction again, start finding other things to do with my time.

One way or another, the next few months will decide that.

  18. It isn’t just about turning the other cheek. We stand for more than football played beautifully, we are giving people, if others all around miss the point, it doesn’t matter. We are who we are. There are hundreds of thousands of us together who, if not football will gather to give, so why give our totem to those who do not have our spirit, because, you, we will not give that up.

  19. Auld Neil Lennon heid on

I’m afraid it is not about acting in anger, it is a personal decision of whether you feel you are being cheated but are prepared to accept it or not.

Some will be and some will not. No boycott involved, just individuals judging what they value most and where they want to direct their energy.

  20. Margaret McGill on

James. I admire you but you have missed the point.

Yes it has nothing to do with goal line technology.

That is just a symbol of the total corruption that is modern

football from the highest echelons all the way down to the little

festering anus that is Scotland (for example). The world is full of festering little football anuses.

    Its all about money.

Doncaster, the SPL , the SFA are just scumbags protecting their

nice little earners for as long as they can. Keep it going.

Rules? Change the rules? Dont make me laugh. They change the rules

accordingly to accommodate their nice little earners.

Why have duff and duffer been hanging on so long?

Coz they are greedy little duffers like all the rest of them.

It is possible that their own greed and ascendant arrogance has buried

the huns. Lets hope so. If so then the Celtic bored dont have to show their

greedy little infected hand as you and all of us are afraid they might.

As far as I am concerned the whole SPL and SFA implementation in Scotland

is one of Celtic parasites( coz we are Celtic till we die die die die die..and fund

huns in the process..all of them)..its what Newco is depending on.

Now if the SPL vote in Newco and Celtic subsequently resign from Newco I will finish eating the straw hat I started eating when Dallas got fired!

Yes Celtic is more than a football club it is an institution.. a glorious one, but,

do only the Celtic supporters know that or can we extrapolate?

However we aint lost yet and the full scale of Ranger’s crimes has still to be fully presented to public view, that will make it difficult for football to ignore.

  24. Margaret McGill on

ok give you another example. Same principle at work.

Tonight some states in the USA voted against benefits for civil unions. This was done under the auspices of “no gay couples” in America. It was sponsored by the religious right who were funded by Insurance companies.

The true reason is that normal couples (man + woman) who are not married cannot claim or be claimed for their partners children or each other on health insurance.

TV media excuse: “God doesnt like gays”

    Truth: Money

  25. Margaret, things are more complicated than that, religions in the states claim tithes, which get tax relief. Their television is so bad they are ill informed but ignorant of it. Aldus Huxley was right
