Those moving on in the summer

1021

I’ve always cautioned against judging a player who has been out for an extended period but being hooked at halftime last night looks like an ominous sign for Derk Boerrigter, who sparkled for 30 minutes on his debut against Ross County earlier in the season but has come nowhere close to that form since.

Injuries stopped him in his tracks that day against County, and several times since, but whatever the reason, we’ve not seen anything like what the player is capable of, and at 27, he is likely to be looking for first team action elsewhere next season.

After last night’s game Neil Lennon spoke of the possibility of signing and losing players over the summer transfer window, which starts in three weeks.  Buying well is crucial, and Celtic didn’t do that last summer, but getting those ‘no longer in the manager’s plans’ off the books as early as possible is also important.

Last August we offloaded Lassad, probably by parting with a bundle of cash in the process.  This is not a precedent Celtic will have been keen to set, but it’s better to have the decks cleared than have an unproductive player linger around for a year.

Anyone starting less than a third of the games he is available for selection should be looking for pastures new, especially with new arrivals expected this summer.

  1. BRTH I agree that the effort put in by many good people is never wasted but it simply makes my blood boil when I see how ordinary people are asked to bear the burden that wealthy governments should pay for.

Gordon Brown infamously stated that whatever it cost for the Iraq war he would write the cheque.

When I saw the first night of bombing of Iraq in the Shock & Awe campaign my thoughts went to the hundreds of thousands of innocent men women and children who were cowering in fear under that bombardment. Many would lose their lives.

When I saw the Royal Navy sailors on TV high-fiving it after launching a Cruise missile at the “bad guys” I thought of the US target teams who gave the co-ordinates with little sympathy for the mistakes that see these weapons decimate whole civilian blocks.

When I saw the war crime that was Fallujah, a massive bombardment costing hundreds of millions of dollars, I didn’t see vastly expensive Depleted Uranium bunker-bursting 500lb bombs, cruise missiles and white phosphorus bombs, what I saw was PET-scanners, kidney machines, CAT scanners and whole hospitals exploding, being cancelled, denied to the needy, to fuel the greedy, in their illegal wars.

I sometimes think that I am in a minority of one because when I saw the beaming Black Watch soldiers being given cigars by the US marines as a reward for guarding the back door to Fallujah, I felt physically sick, that we have learned nothing after hundreds of years being duped into war.

  2. Paul,

would it be an idea to pull all of these wonderful tributes to the Wee Mhan and his family into a CQN Book of Condolences?

Reading through the posts – it’s just typical of the CQN community putting a giant loving arm around Stephen, Leona and Izzy. They will never walk alone.

woke up this morning, excited that I get to coach my high school team in the final 4 over here in the states,a nd then read the very sad news about wee Oscar. I have been on CQN since the beginning, and very rarely post, but that wee Bhoy touched so many hearts. I looked on etims this morning and they had a picture of the wee man with his dad, brought tears to my eyes. God bless the Knox family in this sad time. We have all argued at times on this great site, but any news about our wee bhoy always united and made us smile. I will make sure that I hug my own 4 even more tightly tonight.

    God Bless and prayers.

Oscar is 3 rd top news item on the bbc website. His parents should be proud. As a parent of two kids of a similar age to them I cannot begin to feel their pain. I will say a wee prayer that they manage the best they can.

When its your kids that are sick all you want to do is suffer their pain and take it for them. I hope their pain now is somehow less of a burden by the depth of sadness being felt everywhere.

My heart goes out to them and I hope they find hope in the knowledge that they have made the world a better place.

Was in Edinburgh when I read the sad, sad news about our Wee Celtic Warrior. Drove along the M8 through a heavy rain storm and very dark clouds. Seemed so appropriate to the moment. You touched our lives Oscar. Two memories I don’t think I’ll ever forget: Oscar leading on the Hoops at Celtic Park in front of 40000 fans and a cheeky wee lad with a lovely Irish accent throwing snowballs at the home of a boxing champion and challenging him to come out and fight.

    RIP Oscar.
