Time for an inquest into fragile Celtic limbs

822

One of the things Neil Lennon may have on his agenda for the international break is an inquest into the physical condition of his playing squad.  The season is a month old and Celtic have an injury list which would wipe out pretty much every other team in the country.  If this was an isolated occurrence it would be no more than curious but we have written about, and discussed, the fragile limbs of Celtic players since the Lennoxtown Training Centre opened nearly five years ago.

Since then Celtic ‘lost’ (more on that at a later date) three leagues by a maximum of six points and lost valuable form and points due to first choice players sitting in the stands on match day.

On Saturday our central midfield was without Ledley, Brown, Wanyama, Kayal and McGeouch (on a non-fitness related injury), while even auxiliary stand-in for central mid, Charlie Mulgrew, was on the list of others getting treatment.

The run of bad luck has moved clearly into the realms of statistical relevance.  It is not luck at all, we are doing something wrong.

Football clubs look to sports science to deliver multiple objectives.  Competitive pressure is put on players to become faster and to be able to run as effectively late in games as they can in the opening minutes (which for now is a physical impossibility but remains a key target), but we are clearly missing a trick.

  9. Note to hunz:

It is not a Timmy conspiracy that has brought about your demise, it is simply that your club and all it’s insidious “peepul” have ventured beyond what you can control.

You will note that the only times when things have gone against you throughout this saga are when the people making decisions are not appointed by the hidden, secret forces of darkness.

The only reason you are not in the SPL now is because the decisions were made by all the clubs, not just the SPL board; by all the SFL clubs, not just the SFL board; by HMRC not just the Scottish Government; not forgetting the influence of all the fans across the country, not just your own supporters who clearly don’t care about the truth, just so long as their glorious club is protected.

Just like the only time the truth is told about what is actually happening is when those words are spoken/written by the media outside of Scotland.

The Scottish Sun should just pack up now. You clearly serve no purpose.

Any self respecting “newspaper” which has received death threats etc… in order to influence what you print should be printing a front page story telling everyone about the threats etc…

Remember Watergate? Would you have even heard of Watergate had it happened in Scotland?

  10. Celtic to the very core

You’re not being ganged up on, but if it’s the one I’m thinking of, I’m with MWD. We have reached a place at CP where the GB is the heartbeat of the whole crowd – I am a big fan, but for this one song, I see it as self-indulgent nonsense which does nothing to raise the team. In the Helsingborgs game, they sang it midway through the first-half and it coincided with us losing momentum, losing our way and conceding possession – an up-tempo chant at the time I think would have changed things. I am probably over-stating the GB issue here, but I genuinely believe that when we do the echo chant for example that the opposition can’t handle it. The vid where the stadium is rocking, I think 3-0 against the defunctors (I know it’s not only GB) shows how a crowd can boost a team. I’m not a huge fan of the Aiden McAnespie song at games either for the same reason.

it’s a matter of opinion i guess, i’m not saying its better than the more upbeat songs but i just like hearing it. whether it helps the team or not who knows but generaly there cannot be 90 mins of upbeat songs at every game. the song/tune/ditty i mention gives a continental feel to the games, and the bhoys on the drums make it sound special imo.

  13. Must be just me, but once again I’m not on message with the main article.

I have a knowledge deficiency when it comes to what is going on beghind the scenes in training at Lennoxtown or CP, so tend to stay away from idle speculation. The last line suggests that to me, so I am more led to believe that Paul67 knows something or is again preparing us for something. A new sports science appointment? Who knows, not the kind of signing that would have my mouth watering.

But let’s go a little deeper. Ledley’s injury was in Sweden where he landed awkwardly and seemed to damage a groin. Brown, we know about the apparently degenerative nature of his injury, while Victor was injured in the first-half on Saturday (who knows if it was fitness or impact) and Kayal hasn’t played since first-half in Sweden, where apart from being awful, we’re led to believe he has been injured since (again, fitness or impact, during game or since I’m unclear on). This leaves us with Charlie, who in simple terms played in the week and didn’t on Saturday – again, I’m not clear if it was impact in training or a fitness issue.

This all leads me to be unclear on the hypothesis of the article and would seem to by and large dismiss the ‘it’s Scottish refs fault’ accusation – on this occasion, I am sure it is a factor overall, and has been in previous seasons as alluded to. No doubt on that. But for this season, for those players, right now?

    Must be me.

  14. Celtic to the very core

Sure, no problem with that – was just hypothesising on the effect of crowd chants – maybe no issue there. Aside from that it’s personal taste. So you’re wrong :-) Will listen out for it in future.
