Time to pair Lustig and VVD in central defence

2168

This afternoon’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur gives Ronny Deila a dilemma.  Last weekend he played a second string against St Pauli, but with things going so wrong in Warsaw on Wednesday, the pressure is on to pull a game plan together which will work at Murrayfield.

Our other concern is that the squad, without Ambrose, Brown and Forrest, is already looking threadbare.  We simply can’t afford an injury to afflict Commons, Griffiths, Stokes, Johansen, van Dijk, Matthews, Lustig or Izaguirre.

The suggestion was put to me this week that we should play Lustig with van Dijk in central defence on Wednesday.  Lustig can play there, but would Ronny trust them on such an important occasion without a warm-up game?

If I was taking a risk with first-team players this afternoon it would be to pair these two.  If we’re going to get the required result on Wednesday the most important area of the team to get right is the defence.

  1. Not really interested in the value of the spurs team – is it too much to expect any of our teams to have basic ball control skills ?

    Only thought regarding today’s game

A word of warning for the board

Campbell & Woods opened a chapter in one of their fine books on the club with the expression

“Thats where we are at now is it no gives a Feck ? Well fella maybe you dont but I do.”

If you want to get upset about a bunch of weans losing to a fairly strong Spurs team that is your choice.

It matters not a jot to me. Friendly games ceased being important about 20 years ago. I don’t watch them.

We beat Spurs when Mowbray was in charge and I didn’t even discuss the result with Spurs fans I drink with.

Wednesday is the match that matters.

Was Deilla and Collins both on the bench today? Or were one of them at home working with the first team?

You would think Celtic FC could find a better fixture for the development side on a Saturday afternoon.

hankray. I am pleased Efe did well in the World Cup but he is still not a Centre Back his concentration is extremely poor and who gets sent off in a friendly ? he is a poor example to his younger team mates. H.H.

  8. Met up with my spurs season ticket holder mate this week for a pint.

Never even registered any importance for either of us.

No texts, no gloating and we both remain unmoved.

Nobody gives a feck. Like our demolition of Liverpool in Dublin or the wembley cup no one cares.

    And rightfully so.

I couldn’t get a link for our game, so just been watching the boxing on and off this sacred site.

Couldn’t resist but popt into hunmedia, they got pumped with derby 2-0 with a full team…the comments cheered me up no end.

I thought today was a chance for fringe players to stake a claim for first team football. Doesnt sound like anyone is knocking on that door.

Very good point rest assured talk sport presenters will harp back to it numerous times over the coming years

Tell your son to ask the Spurs & Arsenal fans why they have no star above their crest – that’s what my kids do !!! Normally shuts them up

Thanks for your reply, that’s a very good suggestion.

Like me he will be seething, why do we allow our reputation to be tarnished.

I wonder if PL and Iain Bankier actually realise that results like Wed. and today will influence the Johnny come lately’s who normally do not sign up for ST’s until the last minute and will adversy effect the last minute sales.

I genuinely wonder if they are in touch with basic concepts and influences.

It does nothing for the prestige of Celtic or morale for that matter to get pumped 6-1 with Spurs.

  14. My biggest concern isn’t that Spurs beat our reserves, it’s that we’re playing the bloody game in the first place.

“EPL fans won’t know it was a scratch team …they’ll look at Wednesday and today and wonder why CFC have fallen so far”

I live in London. Believes me, no football fan I know will look at today’s result and judge Celtic by it. Take my word for it.

There are pre-season updates on the telly today coming from grounds all over England. In every single report all you can see is empty chairs in the background.

John Collins and John Kennedy looked after the team today. The manager stayed behind in Glasgow.

That was 40 years ago. Football has moved on light years in that time.

Matches against English opponents were rare and European places were harder to come by for the those teams, so the fixtures were taken seriously.

Those days have gone for good, as you say.

  26. I had forgotten we were playing Spurs. I don’t think friendlies are something to be bothered about. The result won’t affect my feeling for Celtic one wee bit. I shall be in my usual spot at Celtic Park whenever I can, as I expect, will most on here. And it is not that I feel taken for granted by the Board. I have always been to see my team when i could. I always will.

All that was achieved by that pasting today was further damage to the morale of everyone -players, management, supporters. Pre-season friendly or not, it was high profile enough. To lose 6-1 in any game is embarrassing for a club like Celtic.

It was a piece of nonsense to arrange a game like that in between two vital CL qualifiers, knowing that almost all of our first team players couldn’t be risked.
