Time to pair Lustig and VVD in central defence

2168

This afternoon’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur gives Ronny Deila a dilemma.  Last weekend he played a second string against St Pauli, but with things going so wrong in Warsaw on Wednesday, the pressure is on to pull a game plan together which will work at Murrayfield.

Our other concern is that the squad, without Ambrose, Brown and Forrest, is already looking threadbare.  We simply can’t afford an injury to afflict Commons, Griffiths, Stokes, Johansen, van Dijk, Matthews, Lustig or Izaguirre.

The suggestion was put to me this week that we should play Lustig with van Dijk in central defence on Wednesday.  Lustig can play there, but would Ronny trust them on such an important occasion without a warm-up game?

If I was taking a risk with first-team players this afternoon it would be to pair these two.  If we’re going to get the required result on Wednesday the most important area of the team to get right is the defence.

  2. Ok, some guys have indicated they’re not convinced I’m not one of THEM. Fair enough, I’m new and guess that’s just how it goes. A lot has probably to do with how my Efe post went in the end. I didn’t intend it to go the way it did! Anyway, this is one I posted shortly afterwards. You might not agree, and I know it doesn’t prove I’m defo one of us handsome types, but hopefully it’ll buy me some credit. As you’ll see from the first line it was posted before the Efe Bomb exploded and got lost in the aftermath!

Ok, since my Efe rant has been blanked…I, like most supporters have huge concerns about our signing policy over the past few years. I tend to be in the ‘we don’t spend wisely’ camp as opposed to the ‘we don’t spend enough’ camp. Not saying we couldn’t spend more on occasion, but I don’t think that’s the main problem. As guys have shown this morning, there have been a fairly high number of players brought in, but the quality has been seriously lacking. Now, as much as I’ve had a rant about big Efe this morning, I can at least see why he might’ve been considered worth a gamble. His pace & athleticism can be eye catching – it’s his consistent poor performances over a period of time that irritate me. It’s not working so why do we keep playing him. However, there are guys who IMO were never good enough. Josh Thompson, Cha Du-Ri, Daryl Murphy, Amido Balde (far too much spent on a project who showed very little promise in the first place). There are also guys on the lists above I hadn’t even heard of, and as much as most were free’s and likely not on huge wages, it all adds up. Then there are those we wasted a HUGE amount on – £19.8M for Fortune, Fox, Hooiveld, Rasmussen, Murphy, Juarez, Bangura, Balde, Boerrigter & Pukki! That’s an average of £1.98M each on these 10 players from figures posted by dr ramesh. Does anyone really think we can afford to spend that much on these players over a period of 5 years? I realise nothing is guaranteed, and some like Rasmussen (decent penalty box striker I thought, looked more of a goal threat than Pukki) and Juarez (I though looked promising in his first few games) seemed to go sour for reasons other than football. I think Pukki has something, but not sure it’s what we need. That’s almost £4M a year down the pan on 10 players, 2 of which looked like they might have had something to offer but blew it. Now, I’m not saying I have all the answers. I don’t think it’s a simple as offer £5M for a Finboggsan (sp?) and he’ll definitely come. I think the biggest problem is CL qualifiers. If we have 3 levels of target – A, B & C. Then A (Finnboggsan) isn’t likely to come unless we’re already in CL groups (why should he if he has other options?). B (say, Commons, good experienced player without a host of clubs after him or promising youngster looking to step up to European football – VVD) might come for EL or last CL qualifier. Then there’s the ‘C’ listers. Gambles who’ll come no matter what position we’re in as they know we’ll pay a higher wage than anyone else who’s interested and accepts we MIGHT make the CL or EL. The trouble with these players is they rarely make it and then we’re stuck with them. I think these guys are our biggest problem. If it’s a free transfer & low wages then fair enough, but as I’ve shown above we’re paying god money for these guys. My point being, rather than pay money for these guys to come and do nothing but take a wage, making CL or EL qualification a gamble anyway, why not keep that money, hold on to our better players, and if we get to the CL group then go for the £5M Finboggsan’s etc? It can’t be any worse than keeping the money anyway, then selling our best players & replacing them with dross just before the window closes – whether we make the groups or not – which seems to be the current strategy. Surely these C listers could be replaced by youngsters who’ve had a decent amount of game time in the SPFL? Surely these last few years has been the time to give them that game time.

  3. I mentioned this few days back. Ywo young guys from here who are administrators of most popular Legia supporters website asked me if I could help them to find chep sleep in Edinburgh. They will be taking the pictures, writing about the game for the website.

Before the game in Warsaw they put my 170 years history, including 126 years of Celtic on their website. My story was published after on official Legia website.

Guys are not rich. They are coming on Tuesday, will be moving back at 6 am to Poland. Best would be two nights, but could stand long walks in Edinburgh until they are on the board of the plan.

    I would apreciate any help.

I think in option with long walks they would need the dog. The dog would be given back before 5 am on Tuesday.

It would certainly give us more of an idea as to which of our youth players have the bottle to comprte at a higher level.

Because the Edinburgh Festival is on, all the hotels are booked from youth hostels through to 5* hotels, and those that are not are very expensive.

Best options are stay in Glasgow and get a bus through, or, go to one of the backpackers hostels near the Royal Mile when they arrive to see if they have cancellations.
