Time to pair Lustig and VVD in central defence

2168

This afternoon’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur gives Ronny Deila a dilemma.  Last weekend he played a second string against St Pauli, but with things going so wrong in Warsaw on Wednesday, the pressure is on to pull a game plan together which will work at Murrayfield.

Our other concern is that the squad, without Ambrose, Brown and Forrest, is already looking threadbare.  We simply can’t afford an injury to afflict Commons, Griffiths, Stokes, Johansen, van Dijk, Matthews, Lustig or Izaguirre.

The suggestion was put to me this week that we should play Lustig with van Dijk in central defence on Wednesday.  Lustig can play there, but would Ronny trust them on such an important occasion without a warm-up game?

If I was taking a risk with first-team players this afternoon it would be to pair these two.  If we’re going to get the required result on Wednesday the most important area of the team to get right is the defence.

Even when Forrest is fit those two are the best bet. Forrest lacks heart and was maybe given the bigger contract too early. He can change a game with a burst of pace but is too inconsistent and can’t cross a ball properly.

Right, who’s got the URL to volunteer for Brisbane 2018?

Adam Matthews is good going forward, he links up well with James Forrest. He also has a bullet shot, he`s scored a few tremendous long range goals.

I do think Mikael Lustig is a better defender though, albeit quite injury prone.

It might be that Adam does want to go back down south – if so, fair enough, provided we get decent cover in to support Mikael.

When you take it all in, that was, indeed, the best Games, and Opening Ceremony, EVER….

From earlier. You cited a few non specific mistakes that you believe Ambrose made last season. The one example you made clear was the handball offence that Efe was deemed to be guilty of. In fact Ambrose slid on a sodden pitch and the moving ball trundled into his arm which was stationery and supporting the grounded Celt.

But classing a slip as mistake ?

    Hiya.

This is my first day posting on CQN.

Very interesting to see how people react if you say you don’t rate a player and give valid reasons. A real eye opener, I must say.

If its of any use to you I fully support what you say about Efe.He is a nightmare at CH.More mistakes than any CH I have seen. And thats a few.

I prefer Broonie at right mid in front of Mik. Agree that right mid is Adam’s best position though.

That’s a toughie. I think ML is the better defender, but I do think when AM is fit he’s more agile and is better at getting up and down the line than ML. Both can cross pretty well. I’ll go for AM at RB with ML in front of him. Thing is, if we’re playing with a right winger, with the RB’s job being to sit more than go forward, then I think I’d rather see ML than AM. Would be good to have the option of both.

Didn’t realise he was only 22 as pointed out by Cowiebhoy, so maybe I was a bit hasty saying he’s a bit too hit & miss, particularly with the injuries he’s had.

  12. Most players have a pretty poor percentage of completion when crossing the ball, 10-15% is a good completion percentage.

It’s a difficult skill, running and crossing.

    Big cup

He slips an awful lot as well. Notice you haven’t picked up on the other examples. He’s made plenty of mistakes and you can’t deny it. Forster and others have saved his skin many a time. Lucky he’s fast or he’d be Majstorovic poor.

Like I said, Forrest can be a game changer but he lacks a bit of steel and heart.

He infuriates people round me at Parkhead when he expects a foul and doesn’t get one.

On his day he’s a great player.

  14. ….PFAyr, which few ever do.

10-15% that was Beckhams average, and he was lauded as a Master of the Art.

    Not my opinion.

You have tried to present an opinion as a fact. I notice you are skilled at that. Are you a politician?

  16. the glorious balance sheet on

It takes two players to make a good cross, the defender/winger putting the cross in and the presence of a physically imposing penalty box striker in the box to get on the end of it. We haven`t had such a player in a long time.

Think about how good Alan Thompson and Henrik Larsson were for each other.

  17. Doc, that is valid, players with his turn of pace often suffer with injuries

I know I wouldn’t be selling Adam Mathews for £2m, the Bhoy has real potential, not like the 23 year old Amido Balde who JP gave us :-)

Hail Hail and night night, will waken up one day closer to seeing the Hoops again

  18. chrisvancoupon on

Crossing is pretty irrelevant for Celtic at the moment, there isn’t a striker who can jump high enough to get purchase on the ball.

  19. ChrisVanCoupon, Jinky infuriated my Dad(ok, that’s pushing it), but, attackers always do.

They have to be brave enough to try to take people on, fail, try again, fail, try again, fail, try again……………

Then when the cross does connect they have to trust the striker to score.

    That doesn’t always happen either.

Not sure if the match is on TV, but if you are anywhere near Olhos d’Agua, try Shakers Bar – watched many games there.

  21. chrisvancoupon on

    Doc

I think Forrest gives up too easily and often doesn’t try and try again.

Wingers are always inconsistent, it’s a trait of all of them.

Instead of he high ball he should get to the byline more often, a ball a knee height is the hardest to defend.

  22. Matthews is made of chocolate, any half decent challenge, cue the physio, he will have potential when he’s 31, quite happy to blend into the background, take the money and run IMO

  23. Doc

I agree Lustig crosses better from deep, that’s why I’d like to see him do that from the RM position, with AM crossing from the byeline on the overlap. I think AM is a decent crosser, although he struggled with it a bit towards the end of last season.

I also happen to think RM is Broonies best position. He doesn’t have to think as much out there and can cross a good ball on the run. I will say I think he improved a bit in the middle last season. I’m not his biggest fan as a player, but his influence on the team is huge, as shown recently.

I do think there’s a really good player in JF somewhere, but as someone said, he seems to lack heart at times. He’s one of the few that can beat a man & shoot properly. Takes the huff too easily when things don’t go his way or he gets done early. He’s the most frustrating player we have IMO because of what he CAN do.
