Time to pair Lustig and VVD in central defence

2168

This afternoon’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur gives Ronny Deila a dilemma.  Last weekend he played a second string against St Pauli, but with things going so wrong in Warsaw on Wednesday, the pressure is on to pull a game plan together which will work at Murrayfield.

Our other concern is that the squad, without Ambrose, Brown and Forrest, is already looking threadbare.  We simply can’t afford an injury to afflict Commons, Griffiths, Stokes, Johansen, van Dijk, Matthews, Lustig or Izaguirre.

The suggestion was put to me this week that we should play Lustig with van Dijk in central defence on Wednesday.  Lustig can play there, but would Ronny trust them on such an important occasion without a warm-up game?

If I was taking a risk with first-team players this afternoon it would be to pair these two.  If we’re going to get the required result on Wednesday the most important area of the team to get right is the defence.

  1. It’s goodnight from me too. It’s been an interesting first day. I suppose one might say……….

    It’s been emotional!

Any of my mates jumpin about the toon around 77-79 will tell you The Clash were well overrated. Undertones, Damned and Buzzcocks were true punks musically. Stranglers were the kings but not strictly punk, too good for that.

  3. LB has to be IZZY as there is no one else in the squad that can do an adequate job there, RB is Lustig even though he had a total mare in Poland but Mathews would be on the bench if he was.

    Hail Hail.

It puzzles me that players of 22 or 23 are described as promising youngsters. I feel that if a player is not a first teamer by the time he is 23, he has missed the boat in the majority of cases.

Jinky was starring in a European final at 22, aitken, maestro, Nicholas, McClair all regulars in their late teens or early twenties. Tommy burns and George McCluskey are other examples. If you are good enough, you are old enough.

I first heard The Clash as an adolescent 13 year old. They have been a soundtrack to my life. You mentioned a conversation I was having with my childhood friend Dallas Dallas last night. You came on tonight and spouted bullshect. Why?

I perceive that as a dig at me. Why?

I look forward to your detailed analysis of how Celtic can grow it’s income over a three year period.

Factors that helped LG beat us not related to finance.

    At home.

    Played v 10 men.

Match fitter. (related to sub par performances)

Same manager in charge as ended their season.

Not sure of their injuries but not having Scott Brown playing did not help.

My point re ST sales is simple. For every 1000 increase you bring in say £500k.

That is £10k a week in wages.

If the quality of player required to boost crowds is a £30k a week man then you need 3000 more SBs.

    Will one purchase be enough?

If 2 players then you need 6000 more ST’S to sell and so on for the spend to become break even never mind an investment in growth.

Thus the wages on offer and what return we get to make the spend worth it is a much more difficult decision than it would be if a large cheque was guaranteed to fall through your door from TV every season.

But hey let’s ignore the cost of quality per quality player over three years of a contract as a factor in improving the squad to an extent that the crowds come flocking back and just go for it.

If it’s that simple why are Celtic not doing it?

    Just to annoy you?

  7. Griff a defo for Wednesday please,

Even tempted to start with Derk B and pull him if not up for it as we need a different approach to our calculated, predictable at times, build up.

Bombard from the off Wimbledon style and see.

    Go 3 up front.

  8. no way would the polish side have pressed as much with sammi playing on the shoulder of their defenders…

  9. RCB is Big Van then man and LCB is Big Chico Mulgrew slow as a week in jail in the last game with pish first touch and terrible decision making but when he is good he is a hunskelper supreme, find your game mate.

crossing the ball is not an art or a skill,

get past defender, hit the ball to the box, dont do it if there is second defender going to jump in front of it.

strikers, wee , big, fast, slow, disnae matter,

just put the ball in the air .

every now and again you can pick out a run,

then again, the hit and hope is . well hopeless.
