Topping’s who knew what when?

2675

In his Q&A session with the Daily Record yesterday, outgoing SPFL chairman, Ralph Topping touched on the subject of who knew what when, regarding Rangers slide into liquidation saying:

“There wasn’t one single person ever who envisaged this case happening. You tell me who pointed out that this was going to happen – did you?

“The biggest assumption about the set-up in the SPL would be that you would have Rangers and Celtic playing in it in perpetuity – nobody thought that those two bastions of football would ever be involved in anything like this and nobody flagged it up.”

Well, in October 2011 I knew.  This CQN article from 27 October 2011 notes in very specific detail Rangers were going to liquidate, a phoenix would be created which wanted direct access to the SPL (the top flight at that time).  I got the timing wrong, predicting the phoenix would take place during the season, but to be fair, it later became clear this was Craig Whyte’s plan at the time.

Ralph Topping’s SPL knew too.  Rangers alerted them to the situation that very month.  The SPL spend November, December and January preparing the ground for Rangers administration and liquidation, a period during which a new TV deal was signed.

    QUONNO on 29TH JULY 2017

If we don’t get through I still think we will strengthen but I don’t think Paddy will come and Armstrong will go. I think Brendan thought he had enough to get through the qualifiers but the injuries have really biten. I honestly think he’s hanging it out to see if Paddy is an option. When we fail to qualify it casts a shadow over the whole season. It kills momentum and leaves a horrible atmosphere in the stadium.

It was, in more ways than one, a damp, miserable day,Memory can distort things. However, Sunderland with two tall, fast wingers, seemed to score every time they went up the park.

Again, if memory serves correctly, THEIR fans went on the rampage in Berwick the same day.

I know that I can be slow o the uptake. So who is this guy Robinson and why should there be trouble in Sheffield tomorrow?

  10. Just returned home from Newcastle/Sunderland. A great day out. Must have been about 10k Celtic supporters in the stadium and the atmosphere created was superb. The performance on the pitch was even better. 21 player got a run out but despite all of the changes we dominated from start to finish and played in the same style throughout. McGregor rightly gets the credit for his performance and hat trick but for me MOTM was Eboue. Broke up play, kept possession, played simple, effective passes and ran non stop until he was substituted with 10mins to go. Of the youngsters Ralston looks the most impresssive and the most likely to break through this season.

Yes I thought Kouassi was brilliant. The blog was raving about him during the game. Very promising.

  15. Today’s results tell me two things.

    1) There is merit in the oft-used excuse about differential due to where teams are in their seasons preparation. Rosenberg well into their season, Celtic just underway, Sunderland still on holiday. Sub points: Sunderland are Colin Nish. Any team can defend in numbers and survive one game, unlikely to survive two games.

    2) Anyone who signs Lafferty gets all they deserve.
