Toure, Duffy, Diego and Leo

696

I’ve not seen enough of Kolo Toure or Shane Duffy to have a view on their appropriateness for Celtic but I’m very pleased that despite the headcount of central defenders, Brendan Rodgers appears to be aware that he’s only got one he can rely on. We cannot afford to have another season of set-piece trauma in Europe.

Aston Villa’s Scott Sinclair has the makings of a more profound signing for Brendan, especially if he arrives for anything close to Villa’s asking price. Ronny Deila foundered in a sea of wide midfielders who were unable to command a starting place for any duration. We are the club where wide players come to damage their career prospects. Most of those who have ‘walked through Parkhead gates’ in this time had done so on a sale-or-return basis; at circa £6m Scott Sinclair would need to be right.

A friend once asked why the Argentinians adore Diego Maradona but appear reluctant to appreciate Lionel Messi. Diego single-handedly delivered the World Cup in 1986 and retired from international football having given everything to his country as a 33-year-old. Leo bowed out with a couple of runners-up medals two days after his 29th birthday. He could easily compete in another two World Cups, if he had the appetite.

That’s not to judge Leo; maybe he identifies with the people he chose, not with a nation. Many of us do.

  1. Not sure if this is a CQN first but this post is from a Tipp Court where I am awaiting a case being called. I’m not the defendant I hasten to add.

Had hoped to be in Belfast because as I post the Funeral Mass for our comrade Macanbheatha is being held and following Mass he will be buried in Milltown Cemetery.

I trust that CQN’ers all over the world will whisper a wee prayer for this brave Irish Soldier.

Just like to publicly thank Gearóid for organising Mass Cards from CQN’ers.

Those were not lies — they were factual positions that were highly tactical.

We have had a peasants revolt against the Tory Westminster elite run by the wannabe Tory Westminster elite.

Interesting to see that in the year ahead we have another Peasants revolt against the new Tory Westminster elite?

I think we will have one but this time the papers — Scum / Forgers Gazette / Torygraph / DEx — will not support it. Useful idiots served their purpose then denounced by the Global capitalist press running the press.

Final point — Democracy is difficult in a one party press state.

Are you suggesting than anyone who voted leave and would vote leave again is an out and out racist?

I’ve spent most of my adult life in various parts of England. Most of my friends through this period have obviously been English.

They are, tbh, the same as any other ordinary person I’ve met, with the same lives, loves, problems and ideals. They are also-generally-as tolerant of others.

But it doesn’t take much for that jingoistic nationalism to come out. Stand on their toes, they react like they’ve been booted in the balls.

The Exit camp knew this, and played on it. To disastrous-and shameful-effect.

They lied and deceived and played the Little Englander card.

“This happy breed of men, this little world / This precious stone set in the silver sea … Against the envy of less happy lands, / This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.”

Now,as far as I know,it is not illegal for a politician-or anyone else-to lie. Though I wouldn’t recommend doing so in a Court of Law.

But I’m pretty damn sure it is illegal to incite racial hatred. And that is what they did.

They can rot in hell for their machinations. The pity is they are taking us with them.

The UK did not vote to leave Europe – The UK voted to leave London

If you are active in the square mile you are liberal elite doing what you want from fixing interest rates to exchange rates

You have off shore accounts in Panama and you don’t care if big corporations pay tax – as long as you don’t and middle England does

The banking industry raped the UK in 2008 and Middle England tax payers paid for it – and are still paying for it

Middle England did not reject Europe or the people of Europe or for that matter immigrants

There are a few far right idiots all over Europe but the leave campaign were able to mix up immigrants, refugees and terrorist and bundle them into one big problem

The UK voted to leave elite arrogant bankers and terrorist’s not the good people of Europe

He was voted in on a wave of emotion that was fact free.

It was a stuff the lot of them vote that the middle class hard left mentalists have now calcified.

IMO,Corbyn was voted in-by a landslide-as a means of telling the Blairites to gtf.

They are having one last throw of the dice.

I said when Corbyn got the nod that I doubted he was the man to take us forward. But,importantly,he would lead us back to our roots.

That is anathema to Blairites. But it’s important to party activists. I want an alternative to Tory which isn’t Tory wi a different-coloured rosette.

    You are badly mistaken.

The Rock has been moved and what has crawled out is certainly not pretty.

One issue here is that the anti immigrant stance has energised a section of society that generally does not vote or very rarely votes.

Consequently very difficult for mainstream parties to connect with them.

They now have a flag to march behind and someone will pick it up and wave it.

They are the people we need to watch out for.

BJ and MG will not wave it.

However some of the Tories will and UKIP wil give them a hand.

  13. BMcW @ 10.45

The problem we have is what are our roots?

My view is that we have had three strings to our bow in the past:

    Middle class ideologues.

Working class / blue collar / organised labour — pragmatic.

The poor the sick and the unemployed — apathetic at times.

As the white collar workforce has increase we have developed a middle income strata.

Working class background which they think is important but middle class incomes.

The activists are only a small minority — important but not for me critical.

And then you have to ask the activists — what do they want?

Clean hands sitting on the sidelines complaining or dirty hands trying to get things done?

My view is that we cannot write of the next election.

Policies are more important than personalities but JC is damaged goods.

I do not like this slow motion coup we are currently going through.

MH is now a joke and much more culpable than JC for all this.

I do not like the “Grid” nature of the events — staged with military timing.

If JC had any sense he would be bigging up a real successor.

I don’t see one although JMcD has been the star so far.

  14. God help us ,if the likes of Corbyns, party,of left wingers ,govern this country,The days of Socialism, is gone, finished,so I for one hope gets the bullet, there are plenty of good labour people out there who would make a decent opposition leader,be man or woman,so please corbyn do the right thing Resign,if not then the Labour Party are finished,

Generalising –they were worried before the game . Spain have much better players etc . Not perceived to be a great Italian team _ ” worst in 50 years ” etc . Struggle to score ..Better than expected v Belgium . Disjointed v a poor Sweden . Didn’t turn up v Ireland ( the Insigne shot that hit the post apart ) . Beating Spain is being attributed to a great team performance and Conte getting the tactics right .. Saw him on the tele talking about ” Widening the play to give us time and space to play in and denying Spain the luxury of a free build up from the back “. Italians are big on tactics , in my wee part of the world , coffin dodgers sit in bars nursing a caffe machiato and shooting the breeze re the merits of 3 5 2..

By waiting for a while, letting the reality sink in, and then suggesting that there appears to have been a change in the public consciousness and before proceeding down an irreversible path they are holding a further referendum to ratify the result.

  28. TALLYBHOY and SOUTH OF TUNIS,

I watched the games last night in Caserta, where I have been working for the past seven months, and the locals are certainly starting to believe.

As mentioned there was very little confidence before the tournament but two years ago in Cologne I would have said the same thing about the Germans, remember how that turned out.

Saturday will be a tougher test than last night, Germany probably not as up for it as they could be but they are not Weltmeistern for nothing

The winner of this game could be the team to beat.
