Transfer strategy, where we are

1239

If anyone tells you we are about to bid €7m on a guy who scored fewer league goals than Billy McKay last season, and who was signed for €500k last summer, don’t listen to them.  Nonsense like this is 180 degrees away from strategy.  Where would such a player’s sell-on value increase to?  It’s just not going to happen, nor should it, it would be a vanity purchase, the likes of which old Zsa Zsa himself would consider.

The last season we have figures for (season 2011-12), when we had Europa League football, Celtic lost £7m.  Since then three significant things have changed:

We’ve sold Wanyama and Hooper for over £17m (before deductions).
We got back into the Champions League and earned an additional £20m.
Season book sales dropped and this season cost £100 less than before.

Cutting £100 off the ticket price will bring in £4m less than last season.  All other things being equal (which they will not be), this would give us an £11m deficit before Champions League income and any trading surplus.  In short, to retain equilibrium, we need to reach the Champions League group stage more often than not.  Money from Uefa is not so much a bonus, it is necessary to push us into the black.

I know we covered this last week, but £17m for Victor and Gary will not, on its own, equate to £17m for new players.  Gary and Victor were both on their first Celtic contracts when they left, neither of which was near the top earning position (although both were offered top earning contracts).

We’re not going to spend £17m on transfers and be able to pay the new players from the money saved by not paying Victor and Gary.  Instead, the boost to the football budget from these sales will almost certainly disproportionately increase wages, leaving a lesser amount for transfers (if we sign four players for £2.5m each, we’ll probably have to pay each more than the average of Victor and Gary’s wage).

Knowing where they came from, I reckon Victor and Gary cost approximately a combined total of £1m p.a. in wages, the bulk of which would have gone to Gary.  If we bring in four players, each costing multiple millions, they could easily cost us an extra £2m per annum in wages, or £8m over their four year contracts.

In short, there is enough money available to buy several good players, for decent money, on high wages (for Celtic).  This is a good, sustainable, place to be, but it is not transfer window nirvana.  We have moved from a position of carrying a perpetual loss to being able to afford an increase in football budget without splurging into debt to fund it.

This isn’t a detailed budget analysis, there are lots of other variables (McCourt, Rogne etc off the wages, not Murphy, whose wages were off the books already), non-football budget cost inflation, considerable drop in one-off ticket sales (20k seats for £42 each at Rangers games twice a season) and commercial income from 2011-12, variations in season book sales (I hear they are marginally up on same time last year but still down on 2011-12).

The big challenge for the club is to ensure the playing squad is good enough to qualify for the Champions League group stage, and to compete when there, more often than not, without indulging in casino football every year.

We stick to plan, scout and recruit players within budget and with high potential sell-on values.  €7m on a striker from Heerenveen?  Better stick it on black.

The Kano Foundation have around 40 bucketeers for their annual drive at Celtic Park on Sunday.  They could do with a few more.  If you can do your bit, get in touch: contactus@thekanofoundation.com.

    A few scattered thoughts

Hence the line that Sevco will not survive in the short term being peddled by Peter Lawwells chosen outlets. It buys time and time is a great healer.

It also gives the Sevco TV deal a modicom of respectability for those who are not huns and to whom they want to sell it too.

Having witnessed the huns diddle 200m and no punishment meted out. I find that particular line which has been swallowed by the Old Firm needy a difficult one to understand based on any sense of reality or history.

    =========================================================

The board have already projected well beyond this current frenzy.

3 years time – the Zombies return to the SPL, we should be sitting on 5 in a row.

Eyes will be cast towards 10 IAR. The Zombie ‘return’ gives the run-in to that top-billing. TV rights go up.

What happens in these interim years will be forgotten. There will be no outrage, no rejection – the Zombies will take their place at the top table and it will become a straight fight on the park once more.

I wouldn’t say our support is mor eexcited by money than football – last season’s CL campaign puts paid to that notion, BUT, let’s face it – money has been the order of the day since February 2012 when the huns came crashing down.

Far more attention is paid to our finances these days as a result.

In many ways it is no bad thing that the support choose to furnish themselves with rudimentary knowledge of the club’s inner workings and comprehensive understanding of its financial situation – if anything it will ensure we never become blinded by the shiny-shiny like the vacuous Huns and never agian let the club be driven to the edge as it was by the families.

This financial ‘obsession’ is a supplement to the football these days only because of the above. As long as we’re solvent the football will become all-encompassing again as we strive to bury the Zombies.

But I’m getting beyond thinking they will disappear of fthe face of the earth – they will exist in some form due the the sheer number of Orcs out there to be fleeced.

Right now the state they are in – gormless Sally digigng another debt hole with journeymen on high wages – is probably the preferred option for us.

The old model of spend, spend, spend is the only strategy he knows, or anyone else involved in the new satanic regime.

If they were churning out promising quality youngsters on a conveyor belt from Minty Perk then I would view with interest and nascent concern; but no, same old, same old, which means on return to SPL means more spending, mor edebt, more uncertainty around their solvency.

We as a support have a decent balance of financial concern and footballing passion. Debates get heated, abuse thrown around but on the whole it’s a healty thing – nothing goes by us, every viewpoint or scenario gets covered, so Celtic remain in good hands, metaphysically speaking.

  4. By the way, that’s yet ANOTHER Dutchman ready to set Parkhead afire.

In light of this shouldn’t we honour our Dutch contingent over the years by dedicating an away strip to them next season – I was thinking a nice little ‘tangerine’ number…

Paul, Phil and Neil have clearly all been reigned in.

    .

Have they been told something we have not.

Again the head over rules and says they have something to lose by not doing as they are told.

    So do we …Old Firm

I cant accept that compromise for ten in a row.

  8. “Moving on.”, why can’t we move on?”

I heard Doncaster giving it the”lets put it all behind us and move on line”.

We have all heard the supplications that Scottish football moves on and I think we all would want that, but significant barriers have been created by the SFA in the way they handled first the demise of Rangers and then their attempts at resurrection that have turned some of the underlying principles in football on their heads and added significantly to an already culture of truculence (nobody likes us we don’t care) amongst part of the Rangers support.

That got ne thinking what is required to allow Scottish football to move on and I came up with this.

Before the game can move on the regulation loophole arising from Bryson’s law needs to be closed. It will be difficult to do so for the very good reason that it will be difficult if not impossible to find a form of words that FIFA would be happy with that conform with FIFA guidance on player registration and impact on eligibility.

In effect Bryson’s law says “these are the registration requirements, but if you decide to ignore them the worst penalty will be a fine if anyone even finds out that you have ignored them.”

Thus whilst FIFA lay down the law, the Bryson interpretation subverts the purpose of that law by making the consequences and risks of not following it so inconsequential in fair play and financial terms that clubs would be prepared to take the risk.

On top of that Rangers only got away with not revealing side letters because the governing body trusted what they were being told (at best) and ignored what they really knew was going on at worst. There has been no admission of either of these two conditions created by the lack of proper governance by the SFA nor any resolve to stop a repeat and until there is the game cannot move on. So here are two moving on statements for examination by “Rangers” and the SFA.

    The Rangers Sttaement.

We recognise that those responsible for running Rangers currently undergoing liquidation did so in an unfair fashion be that DOS, EBT or unsustainable debt. We therefore give up all claim to trophies won under that regime since 2000 when the DOS scheme was started and in return look for clemency on the question of compensation for the financial losses other clubs suffered as a result.

    The SFA Statement.

We recognise that we failed Scottish football by not only failing to apply due rigor when accepting what we were told during annual club licensing, but in our mistaken attempts to keep a failed club, working to a failed business model, alive contributing to significant loss to the UK tax payer.

The parties in position of authority in situe at the SFA and still employed there (names) take responsibility for the impact our misgovernanace has had on Scottish football and have therefore resigned and the SFA have called in (business consultants) to examine the processes that failed and asked them to come up with recommendations that will not only prevent a repeat, but will help restore trust in the way in which Scottish Football will be run in the future.

There that should do the trick.

Most of that is fair enough, and we are pretty kuch in agreement but I cant accept our neutered stance to continual cheating. It can only be explained by aanging to remain One of the big two in a small pond. I would rather we spoke out and break the bond of Old Firmness. Its too hunnish for me not to want that and to compromise on that which we clearly are.

Rosenberg didn’t have a Rangers as rivals yet qualified for CL group stages for a record 8 times in a row. We can do the same and thrive. We need to see ourselves as a European team. I believe that’s how most Celtic supporters see us. We don’t need no stinkin’ Rangers.

    _____________________________

I know my way around a business case and using that experience and the information supplied in 2010 the last set of AGM ratified accounts, the IPO statements and the last Interims published I came up with this business case for The Rangers.

https://drive.google.com/?tab=wo&authuser=0#my-drive to try and inform myself of their real financial standing.

I erred on the generous side including money for a stadium name change and have not reduced the sum calculated left at the end of last season (£12M) to the £7m to £8M that was being suggested a month back. Allowing for that generosity in assumptions they face a black hole of £1.13M by the end of this season possibly £5.9M if in fact the starting position this season is £8M.

The caveat is that they might be being funded by means other than shown to keep the show on the road or the other possibility is that they are being stuffed turkey like by those share holders who can sell up around Christmas (hence the turkey analogy)and who need to promote the illusion of a healthy and growing club to get as good a deal on their share sale as they can but the new owners will find it a dry rot ridden shell.

These are just possibilities using what is known, no one as far as I know is saying it is certain and a reason not to demand reforms. I want reforms in case the figures are way out and they do make a comeback, as I do not trust the culture that created the current problem one bit and believe that Celtic need to protect themselves and us against. However PL has probably got a better idea of their business case than represented in the attached and is possibly more relaxed on reform because neither they or the governing culture that enabled them will survive in any form Celtic need worry about.

However not knowing what PL knows I want assurances that the SFA will be restructured to serve our game as a whole and not just one club.

We should get a better idea of their financial position by the start of the season as the SFA have undertaken to publish certain financial details taken from club licensing submissions. I am watching this with interest as it will help calibrtae the business case or, if nothing is published, suggests the turkey is heading for the oven.

I see us as a global Phenomenom due to what we are. Succeeding against oppression and the odds. A faithful support that believes in ideals. Not just paying lip service to it for the sake of money and profits never mind financial stability. I would like all vestages of the Old Firm removed including from within our club.

If I can make an analogy , if the Celtic support is Dorothy in the wizard of Oz when the curtain was pulled back …where we expected to see the Wizard we saw the wicked witch of the East and we are not getting back to Kansas ..no heart, brain or courage.

For a club that was founded on charitable principles and generations of supporters that fought for justice and fairness and never got it. To compromise now for money is insulting to their memory.

We need to get to Kansas. I dont believe we as a club need the huns but we do need to obliterate the SFA and the newly backed and funded by us ????? SPFL

Otherwise we lose what makes us a Phenomenom for the sake of profit.

Its the most debated theme on CQN and I cant believe we have not had an influence or cant change matters. We could if they were punished and that is why they never will be. Its what the PLC wants …they just dont want us to know that.
