Transfer strategy, where we are

1239

If anyone tells you we are about to bid €7m on a guy who scored fewer league goals than Billy McKay last season, and who was signed for €500k last summer, don’t listen to them.  Nonsense like this is 180 degrees away from strategy.  Where would such a player’s sell-on value increase to?  It’s just not going to happen, nor should it, it would be a vanity purchase, the likes of which old Zsa Zsa himself would consider.

The last season we have figures for (season 2011-12), when we had Europa League football, Celtic lost £7m.  Since then three significant things have changed:

We’ve sold Wanyama and Hooper for over £17m (before deductions).
We got back into the Champions League and earned an additional £20m.
Season book sales dropped and this season cost £100 less than before.

Cutting £100 off the ticket price will bring in £4m less than last season.  All other things being equal (which they will not be), this would give us an £11m deficit before Champions League income and any trading surplus.  In short, to retain equilibrium, we need to reach the Champions League group stage more often than not.  Money from Uefa is not so much a bonus, it is necessary to push us into the black.

I know we covered this last week, but £17m for Victor and Gary will not, on its own, equate to £17m for new players.  Gary and Victor were both on their first Celtic contracts when they left, neither of which was near the top earning position (although both were offered top earning contracts).

We’re not going to spend £17m on transfers and be able to pay the new players from the money saved by not paying Victor and Gary.  Instead, the boost to the football budget from these sales will almost certainly disproportionately increase wages, leaving a lesser amount for transfers (if we sign four players for £2.5m each, we’ll probably have to pay each more than the average of Victor and Gary’s wage).

Knowing where they came from, I reckon Victor and Gary cost approximately a combined total of £1m p.a. in wages, the bulk of which would have gone to Gary.  If we bring in four players, each costing multiple millions, they could easily cost us an extra £2m per annum in wages, or £8m over their four year contracts.

In short, there is enough money available to buy several good players, for decent money, on high wages (for Celtic).  This is a good, sustainable, place to be, but it is not transfer window nirvana.  We have moved from a position of carrying a perpetual loss to being able to afford an increase in football budget without splurging into debt to fund it.

This isn’t a detailed budget analysis, there are lots of other variables (McCourt, Rogne etc off the wages, not Murphy, whose wages were off the books already), non-football budget cost inflation, considerable drop in one-off ticket sales (20k seats for £42 each at Rangers games twice a season) and commercial income from 2011-12, variations in season book sales (I hear they are marginally up on same time last year but still down on 2011-12).

The big challenge for the club is to ensure the playing squad is good enough to qualify for the Champions League group stage, and to compete when there, more often than not, without indulging in casino football every year.

We stick to plan, scout and recruit players within budget and with high potential sell-on values.  €7m on a striker from Heerenveen?  Better stick it on black.

    If we have sold 50000 season tickets as some posters on here have indicated then it might be hard for SB sales to dwarf that when they arrive back as we can only sell a maximum of 53 k season books.

    However, I do know what you mean. There is a large element of our support who miss games v Them. I don’t and I would be happy if we never had today against them again.

    auldheid, the biggest crime is we allowed this to happen and did nothing about it.

    ===========================

    That is a possibility but the problem was and is, what to do without collapsing the pack of cards? It is now looking as if that pack will collapse if Hearts do not get a CVA or are allowed to continue but go belly up in say October.

    Celtic have one vote like the other clubs and that limits their power to an extent and this has to be taken into account. We might own 90% of the football but are not in a position to pick it up and take it home, not if we want5 to keep playing football.

    Auldheid:

    That just isn’t going to happen. Can you imagine the civil law suit frenzy. A prerequisite to reconciliation, to my mind, would be for the SFA to hold up their hands, admit Bryson was coached to mislead, have every office holder declare his membership of any and all secret societies, dispense with the favouritism, strip Rangers of all tainted trophies, insist the new huns square up all the old Rangers creditors, rescind the new huns licence and send them to the juniors, define and publish unequivocally the status of the history of the new huns, and for Rangers to accept all that with good grace.

    And you and I both know that ain’t gonna happen either.

    The quality of mercy is not strain’d,

    It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven

    Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;

    It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:

    ‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes

    The throned monarch better than his crown;

    His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,

    The attribute to awe and majesty,

    Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;

    But mercy is above this sceptred sway;

    It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,

    It is an attribute to God himself;

    And earthly power doth then show likest God’s

    When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,

    Though justice be thy plea, consider this,

    That, in the course of justice, none of us

    Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;

    And that same prayer doth teach us all to render

    The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much

    To mitigate the justice of thy plea;

    Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice

    Must needs give sentence ‘gainst the merchant there.

    The Zombies cannot return to the SPL as they have never been in it. ;) It is a disgrace that a tribute act were allowed to form and were given a head-start over teams like Spartans. The cheating looks less hidden now. It’s out in the open. Nobody does anything more than to vent some anger through their keyboard. Some even miss ‘them’. We keep paying in. We are expected to accept that Celtic could not do anything about the past or future of the game. That our silence is dignified. I do agree that what happens in the interim years will be forgotten and it will be back to business as usual, which includes cheating us to benefit them. Then the new old firm can share the feast at the top table and we can keep paying for that. I would rather ‘a Rangers’ survived despite the efforts of my club to get justice and equality and not because they remained silent and did nothing. They would have stood on our wind-pipe given the chance. I don’t understand our generosity. Nor do I believe it is because they will remain a basket case club while me move on to pastures new, such as the EPL.

    An opportunity was missed at recent reconstruction. If we were conceding prize money so that other clubs could be subsidised then we should have been driving a much harder bargain with regards to the SFA and office holders at the SPFL. We should have demanded an end to the committee structure, the sacking of RC Ogilvie, Doncaster, Regan and Longmuir.

    Now that the SPFL has been instituted it will be hard to effect any change. I agree with those who say that we should be looking for a new league/ be in the vanguard of organising a new league incorporating Scandinavian, Dutch, Belgian and Portuguese clubs.

    The one vote refers to SPFL meetings or SFAS meetings and in order to get changes through Celtic need the support of other clubs.

    On for example strenghtening club licensing to make cheating more difficult, it looks a no brainer but what if a number of clubs fall short of essential requirements and have been granted one on the nod? They are unlikely to vote in favour of change because of its negative impact on them.

    The Scottish business model relies heavily on the money of the only super power in Scottish muscle. I’d like to see us flex our muscles. Just now, I see us as the bullied wee boy, too afraid to speak out or worse still complicit.
