Turning gold into mud tricky for English clubs

705

Owen Coyle has probably no idea the trouble caused in his name at Celtic.  Notions that his granny’s uncle’s cousin passed on verifiable information that either Owen rejected the Celtic job, or that he did so because he didn’t agree with the direction the club were going, were clearly nonsense at the time and are more evidently the case now.

Having just earned promotion to the English Premier League the man chose not to be interviewed for the Celtic position, a perfectly defendable decision.  He was never offered a job.  Coyle performed well at St Johnstone (without winning promotion) and did well at Burnley before managing an inevitable decline at Bolton.  He remains a good manager who I hope gets back into the game soon.

The Bolton lesson to football is stark.  On some levels the club was well run.  Good manager, good scouts, a small but faithful following, a chairman who could see the iceberg ahead, all signed up to the ambition to remain in top flight football, but their budget was forever under pressure.   Debts topped £100m, although the directors ensured public services didn’t suffer as a result of their ‘ambition’.

Three years ago Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman, knew the model in the English game was unsustainable and tried to change things.  He failed, unfortunately, and was unable to produce a reverse alchemy – turning tens of millions of pounds from Sky TV each year into a 17th place finish in the Premier League.  I hope the change works for them.

I used to really like Nevin. He was supposed to have more of a brain than the average footballer. Now I realise that having a brain matters not if you have no soul.

  8. Just read the Forbes article on Rankers , I can’t help but think that it would be naive , and perhaps arrogant on our part to simply dismiss the content and have a good laugh at Rankers / Newco etc.

The clue for me, is in the title of the article ‘what can we learn’, and I would hope that as a support, we are not so dismissive as to challenge Celtic’s business model against some of the suggestions put forward.

It goes without saying, that we are not in the position that Rankers are in,but many of the economic / market challenges e.g. Declining attendances/ declining sponsorship / EPL growth are equally relevant.

Admittedly, we have managed those challenges a lot better than most, but that shouldn’t prevent us thinking about driving revenue from new sources, managing costs and, to paraphrase the writer, one of the best marketing strategies to remain as No1 brand, is to act / fights / challenge yourself as though you are a No2.

    Thoughts ?

“The cowardice of the sevco klan has no equal. If they hear or read anything that criticises ‘them’, they become apopleptic and bombard ‘their’ blogs spewing their bile and hatred. This is quickly followed by threats of violence – or death.

The Scottish msm, however, continue to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to all this – it is left to people like yourself, Alex Thomson, RTC and others to set the record straight.

I often despair at what I hear coming from the hacks of the laptop loyal – but that is what we have come to expect of them. Cowards one and all. But their day will come – of that I am convinced”

    With you on that one!

Two damaging earthquakes here in Italy this year had their epicentre just over 100 km from where I am – 27 killed, hundreds injured and c20,000 homeless.

We felt them here too – walls literally swaying from side to side, furniture shaking…not nice. Thankfully no damage or casualties.

If this is what this site has become – I also despair! Making ill-advised and, frankly, juvenile comments about varying degrees of magnitude leaves me cold!

I never seen anyone making a joke of victims or even encouraging mirth about them.

Its a natural disaster a natural occurance, the fact there are victims is not the point.

Should people identify eathquakes without human tragedy, do you believe posters on here are laughing at earthquake victims, how very dare you.
