Turning gold into mud tricky for English clubs

705

Owen Coyle has probably no idea the trouble caused in his name at Celtic.  Notions that his granny’s uncle’s cousin passed on verifiable information that either Owen rejected the Celtic job, or that he did so because he didn’t agree with the direction the club were going, were clearly nonsense at the time and are more evidently the case now.

Having just earned promotion to the English Premier League the man chose not to be interviewed for the Celtic position, a perfectly defendable decision.  He was never offered a job.  Coyle performed well at St Johnstone (without winning promotion) and did well at Burnley before managing an inevitable decline at Bolton.  He remains a good manager who I hope gets back into the game soon.

The Bolton lesson to football is stark.  On some levels the club was well run.  Good manager, good scouts, a small but faithful following, a chairman who could see the iceberg ahead, all signed up to the ambition to remain in top flight football, but their budget was forever under pressure.   Debts topped £100m, although the directors ensured public services didn’t suffer as a result of their ‘ambition’.

Three years ago Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman, knew the model in the English game was unsustainable and tried to change things.  He failed, unfortunately, and was unable to produce a reverse alchemy – turning tens of millions of pounds from Sky TV each year into a 17th place finish in the Premier League.  I hope the change works for them.

  1. Just read the Forbes article, very interesting, but obviously written by someone with no knowledge of the sectarian nature of the fan base.

I thought it my duty to inform the readers of Forbes as to the true nature of the beast, just in case some may have been thinking of investing.

you hav a (small) donation. Will try to buy some merchandise too. Good luck and hopefully we can all make the greatest European night since the Champions League was introduced. Would be good if the club could also do something a little bit special. Not to give Barca more respect than they deserve (which is still considerable) but to remember the 125 years and to allow one of Europe’s greats warmly welcome another. Even the coloured paper to show both team colours and a message would be great.

  5. Why fear Barca ?

We have a fairly decent record against them.

Our team is growing in stature weekly.

    No fear, eleven against eleven.

    Tallybhoy,

There are lots of people who dont want particular topics discussed, the strength of this site is that there are no topics censored.

I’ve been on the site a wee while now and cant remember the victims of any natural disaster being the butt of jokes.

I have seen many puns and jokes about tsunami, volcano, earthquakes, tornado, hurricane, lightening strikes, melting polar ice fields and the shrinking ozone but still to see a victim the butt of a joke.

Well maybe the lightening strike might have had a joke.

So if we’re censoring discussion about earthquakes we need to take the rest off the list.

Or are you one who wants this site to be discussiong Celtic solely.

There are many who have come from other sites and demanded only matters Ceitic be discussed then want to talk about the hun. This site has always been an ecletic and free format as long as you dont swear. There are many many sites for discussion only Celtic why do you want to turn this into one of them

  11. Clashcitybhoy,

Spot on. I had similiar thoughts reading that interesting article. While our Board has managed our club well in recent years, our fate isn’t wholly in our hands. Structural change is needed in European football and I’m not convinced Platini’s well intentioned plans will fully curtail the debt nutters.

I do so hope the Scottish team beat Wales on Friday.

For it will reduce the odds on a Belgian victory the following Tuesday ever do slightly.

And Belgium to best Scotland will be buying money, whatever the price.

  16. Pat was walking out of Celtic Park just ahead of me after the Celtic – St Johnstone game at the start of April when it was tight until midway through the second half until Samaras scored with a beauty of a header. We won 2-0 in the end.

Anyway, Pat just said casually to the two or three of us who were within earshot: “The manager won that game. Everybody just comes here these days to match up, but Celtic changed it and Samaras went through the middle and a few minutes later it’s 1-0 and well done Lenny.”

Someone posted a question a couple of weeks back re trying to find out how the GB funded their fantastic banner displays, and saying he’d like to contribute but didnt know how to. I got this email from the GB site today:

“On November 7, almost 125 years to the day from Celtic’s founding meeting in St Mary’s Chapel in the Calton, we take on the might of Barcelona in the Champions League on what promises to be another special night in the incredible history of our great club.

We are keen to mark this special night with a ‘tifo’ befitting this fantastic occasion. As you will know, before most European matches we prepare a display around the curve at 111. These have become very popular, add to the electric atmosphere on European nights and, we’d like to think, help spur the team on to victory. We fund our tifos through membership fees, group fundraisers and merchandise sales and these have so far covered the costs of displays around the curve.

For the Barcelona game, however, we want to push the boat and do something special, but we can only do it with your support. If we can raise enough money we plan on doing our biggest and best display yet. We know times are tough but if you are able to contribute anything – big or small – we would greatly appreciate donations through paypal, to greenbrigade@hotmail.co.uk.

If you are able to donate, please send as a ‘gift’ option and mark it ‘donation’ in the notes section.

    Green Brigade”

Hail Hail the Glorious Green Brigade.

    ————————————————

    Nice one , a c g r

This game will be watched by millions around the world ( and the orcs ) . So it would be fantastic to show the world what a truly magnificent support we are. If the good people of CQN can help the GB to do this by donating to the cause then i’am sure we won’t be disappointed. ” BRING BACK THE THUNDER “

  21. Tickets for the quarter final against St Johnstone go on sale tomorrow, £15 for adults. As Celtic only expect the lower tier to be open season ticket holders can purchase any seat that’s available (for the last round I was front row right above the tunnel – magic!) So before I chosse my seats tomorrow evening, has any agreement been reached on where the CQN gathering will be situated? ;-)

Where and when did I say that only Celtic topics should be discussed on this forum?!

You are obviously confusing me with someone else!

I have discussed many topics on here not just Celtic related ones – and that is the way it should be.

I am not the only poster on here tonight who objected to the earthquake topic – but I seem to be the only one being criticised for airing an objection!

agree celtic need to push on with new business ventures to grow, thats where all available resources should be directed i.e. museum, hotel, restaurant, social clubs, internet internal t.v etc…

think we have to be realistic about crowds dropping, its against a backdrop of mass unemployment, poor job security and increased cost of living.

EPL income has continued to grown, in t.v income only, but the debt level of clubs suggests trouble is just around the corner for most, cloths will have to be cut sooner rather than later, the bubble will burst, they will continue to get good money, but not what they are getting right now and i also happen to think our (SPL) business people get just about the worst deal they can get which does not help anyone.

maybe celtic sould be looking to take a lead on all these fronts now and we will be in a great position in 5 years time.
