Turning gold into mud tricky for English clubs

705

Owen Coyle has probably no idea the trouble caused in his name at Celtic.  Notions that his granny’s uncle’s cousin passed on verifiable information that either Owen rejected the Celtic job, or that he did so because he didn’t agree with the direction the club were going, were clearly nonsense at the time and are more evidently the case now.

Having just earned promotion to the English Premier League the man chose not to be interviewed for the Celtic position, a perfectly defendable decision.  He was never offered a job.  Coyle performed well at St Johnstone (without winning promotion) and did well at Burnley before managing an inevitable decline at Bolton.  He remains a good manager who I hope gets back into the game soon.

The Bolton lesson to football is stark.  On some levels the club was well run.  Good manager, good scouts, a small but faithful following, a chairman who could see the iceberg ahead, all signed up to the ambition to remain in top flight football, but their budget was forever under pressure.   Debts topped £100m, although the directors ensured public services didn’t suffer as a result of their ‘ambition’.

Three years ago Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman, knew the model in the English game was unsustainable and tried to change things.  He failed, unfortunately, and was unable to produce a reverse alchemy – turning tens of millions of pounds from Sky TV each year into a 17th place finish in the Premier League.  I hope the change works for them.

Last week we were told that power cuts were more likely in 3 years than the 14 years first thot. What do you Bhoys think abt how Sky & Virgin will address this if customers have missed out on 3 or 4 games due to these predicted power cuts? Also will power cuts happen during a game and leave thousands of fans in darkness??

    Who’s Ronaldhino? :))

Interesting succint point you make. Oor Lenny was very important in neutralising Barca when we played them. I’ve said it here before, but I was reliably informed that (in my ignorance, as much as I liked his work, I never full appreciated it), Lenny’s role was surveying the layout in front of him – bearking up attacks, then distributing the ball to where he knew it’d be more effective. I’m glad to see he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves for his footballing brain. I expect he’ll be having long chats with Broonie, Victor and Kayal (if he plays) on the importance of their roles in these games. He’ll be looking to take points for sure.

The future has to be shifting the onus of support away from SB holders at CP to Celtic supporters wherever they are using technology.

The HUGE problem is the disparity in cost of watching a game as a traditional SB holder and an on line watcher.

Taking the high definition option for overesas Celtic TV subscribers they get to watch ALL SPL games plus some cup games (say 40 matches) at a cost of around £4.50 a game compared to the £25/27 to watch 20 odd games not to mention the cost of attending.

Assuming that bandwith developments remove complaints of buffering and games can be viewed on PC/IPad/mobiles almost anywhere and that a no show zone can be established within an agreed perimeter sround CP then it should be possible to increase revenue overall whilst reducing the cost of actual attendance.

My hope is that the Overseas Season Book can be the shape of things to come, but for that to be so prices for on line viewing have to rise per game to reverse the existing disparity in cost share.

If you cannot take Celtic physically out of Scotland you can do so virtually and I would be arguing with FIFA and UEFA for an exemption from the existing broadcasting restraints especially because of the huge disadvantage we face being on the EPL’s doorstep.

However for Celtic to even consider putting any investment into this strategy they would need some indication that the support will actually support it.

Response to the OSB initiative over the next two seasons will be crucial in enabling the investment argument to be made.

  13. Think about it.

When were ever “hammered” in Europe?

We were robbed on so many occasions I’m feeling paranoid.

Olympic style diving from Man Utd and Arsenal.

    Robbed against Juventus.

    Robbed against Liverpool in Anfield.

Crazy goals given away against Benfica.

Dont forget beating Utd, the home draw against the Mighty Bayern Munich,.

Hammering Blackburn in their own patch.

The two Milan games? the ungiven penalty /

    Putting Barca out of Europe.

I think we underestimate our performances in the Europa cup last year.

This year we have matched or surpassed everybody we have come up against in Europe.

    Bring on Barca !!

By the way any CQNers heading to Lisbon ?
