Turning gold into mud tricky for English clubs

705

Owen Coyle has probably no idea the trouble caused in his name at Celtic.  Notions that his granny’s uncle’s cousin passed on verifiable information that either Owen rejected the Celtic job, or that he did so because he didn’t agree with the direction the club were going, were clearly nonsense at the time and are more evidently the case now.

Having just earned promotion to the English Premier League the man chose not to be interviewed for the Celtic position, a perfectly defendable decision.  He was never offered a job.  Coyle performed well at St Johnstone (without winning promotion) and did well at Burnley before managing an inevitable decline at Bolton.  He remains a good manager who I hope gets back into the game soon.

The Bolton lesson to football is stark.  On some levels the club was well run.  Good manager, good scouts, a small but faithful following, a chairman who could see the iceberg ahead, all signed up to the ambition to remain in top flight football, but their budget was forever under pressure.   Debts topped £100m, although the directors ensured public services didn’t suffer as a result of their ‘ambition’.

Three years ago Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman, knew the model in the English game was unsustainable and tried to change things.  He failed, unfortunately, and was unable to produce a reverse alchemy – turning tens of millions of pounds from Sky TV each year into a 17th place finish in the Premier League.  I hope the change works for them.

Not a bad place to start. No intention to make you feel inferior BTW! Interesting idea though at odds with the Scholastics view.

Went to St Augstine’s Primary in Milton, but was in St Monica’s parish. However, never found out the connection until university – or, as is most likely, I was off sick with a hangover when this was discussed in P5 :))

Saint Stivs, if Venus is the large “star” lowish in the east about 10pm, then I reckon I’ve been seeing it the last few nights. I didn’t see the northern lights though.

As a traveling supporter I sometimes cannot get to games if I could transfer my SB on these occassions and be able to watch via internet by a code or whatever method it would cost the club nothing, Logistically it may be a problem but it could be a way to go. I dont want a full osb because I do make most of the matches but partial osb could be another format to pursue. Or should I get ma coat again

I know that – am just being satirical about my own inferiorities. And they don’t really bother me that much :)) Enjoyed the reference though, was interesting to read about it. Makes me think about the depth of intelligence of that man’s era, compared to today. A theology v science discussion today would be like (literally) listening to 12 yr olds compared to how deeply these things were thought about pre 17-8th Century.

Even Lucretius, albeit an epicurean, had a good handle on the science of today – why is there a need to simplify theology and science these days……or is the answer obvious…easy to dismiss things…..Hmm…..

See what you’ve done, you’ve sent me off on one!! ……. :))

  10. One of the great things about Celtic fans is their ability to make friends and leave an Impression on just about anyone we come into contact with.

I feel enormously proud of my club when I read quotes from other fans, players, managers, like those posted by Madrua. Although I’ve read them many times I feel it’s important that we appreciate our place in football.

I love the fact that the impression we leave on others is virtually always positive.

Well said. Our popularity in Europe did not come from nowhere.

Mibbes we are the ones keeping true Celtic hospitality real…not bad for a bunch of hirsute barbarians ( as the Romans saw us) :))

St Monica’s church has gone but the 2 primary schools have amalgamated and the school is named St Monica’s in memory of the former parish.

Im off to Tenerife on Friday for a week. When I come back Im going to speak to Father Sweeney in St Patricks Coatbridge abt having a retiring collection for the Knox family. The target has been achieved for Oscars treatment now the family need financial support. I hope to cover all parishes in Coatbridge over the next 5 weeks if allowed.

So come on Bhoys approach your parish priest / rabbi / minister/Mullah abt it and CRC will provide the buckets

  15. HT,

Thanks for that. Last time I was in the area, sad to see it being totally demolished. Growing up their in 70s-80s, folk were good people, let down only by the odd mental family at the end of every street.

It was a school that shaped who I am today (well the good bits!!).

I always think back affectionately to the people who shaped my development there, teachers and priests. All good people. I was lucky enough to be confirmed at St Monica’s by Cardinal Winning (when he was Bishop Winning). A name I always associated with the Tic :)) And won’t forget seeing Fr Hurly on tv queuing up to get into Celtic Park. He always broke up the seriousness of our confessions by talking to us about the football. :)))

Interesting points. I think science and empiricism (previously sub-components of philosophy!) have moved centre stage and are now regarded as the de facto source of “fact” or “truth” in the Western tradition of thought. Science has a good track record of explanation of course, based on empirical information and therefore always an inference based on previous experience. There is no fact or truth for this type of knowledge. It also does not help us with either morals (ethics) or aesthetics.

Interesting programme in tonight presented by Ian Hislop about the English and their emotions. No overt reference at all to Rationalism weirdly…

  17. Bhoys- Help! Does anyone know of trips/packages to the Benfica game with flights from Ireland???

  18. Maybe the next debate should be “apart from Celtic fans, who are the friendliest fans you have met.

Personally I’ve always had good banter with the Germans. Belgians and Dutch are boisterous in a good way. Part of the fun is trying to break down the language barrier, usually on a crowded train!

How good is it playing in Europe

  19. Someone mentioned twitter followings, size of, earlier.

Celtic have the same nr as Everton or West Ham. Half that of Ajax.
