Two points gained at the weekend changes priorities for Lazio and Aberdeen

102

Reports in Italy suggest Lazio will ring the changes for Celtic Park on Thursday.  They made a remarkable recovery to snatch a point after being 0-3 down to Atalanta on Saturday, with striker, Ciro Immobile, scoring two penalties.

That recovery was welcomed but the draw means Lazio sit one point and one place behind neighbours Roma, who currently occupy the last European qualification spot in Serie A.  They have Fiorentina away on Sunday with only goal difference separating the teams.  There are seven teams within a win of catching Lazio, you could understand if domestic games were prioritised over Europe.

Had Hearts not taken a point from Newco on Sunday, you and I might be saying the same thing.  Already two points behind, the visit to Pittodrie on Sunday would feel like our most important game of the season.

Now, I’m not so sure.  If we slip on Sunday, will anyone, apart from the permanently neurotic, have serious worries about our Premiership challenge?  I see the argument for resting players in Europe ahead of the League Cup semi-final, but not in the league.

  1. Re Morelos to an EPL side.

I am sure he wouldn’t get a permit.

He would need to have been capped numerous times for his home country.

How often has he played for Columbia?

Maybe a couple of more times than he has scored against us.

Is it coincidence that these fairy tales have emerged after the Sevco faithful have seen their optimism quashed?

Or maybe there is a bit of bad news due when the accounts are published.

I hear the GASL will soon appear with them on the Great British Bake Off

  2. I’m sure that Neil will out out a team against Lazio that will give 100% and press the Italians into errors.

Steady Eddie will continue his goal scoring form suitably supported by a determined, invigorated Ryan Christie.

The euphoria will carry on to Aberdeen.

Meanwhile the Huns will stumble in Porto, who, as we all know, are well versed in the dark acts of tumbling and diving. The Govan Huns will not have recovered enough when they meet their Lanarkshire counterparts.

All in all a perfect end to a glorious 9 days.

    In Neil we trust.

You paint a positive picture of the future…let’s hope so. I didn’t go as far as the dandies…0-4…so 2 wins from me and am not greedy lol

    H.H.

  4. I would love to see Frimpong in a more forward role…mibbe ahead of El Hamed…gives Jamesie a rest and wake up call…

  5. Good morning from a dry at the moment and very dark Garngad

A good read back there over on whether to prioritise the Lazio or Sheep game, my preference is Sunday, but how does Lenny prioritise 1 game over another??

What I mean by wanting to win on Sunday is that I hope he does not play strongest team on Thursday and rest or change team for Sunday, he has to play strongest team in both occasions.

Do I want him to play a weakened team against Lazio???? I don’t think so..

  6. But then again… Nah.

I just know that our priority/ my preference should be the League when we are this close.

  7. I’ve a 4am start tomorrow to make my way over to the match. Really looking forward to it and what I suspect will be a great night. However, Aberdeen is more important and that should be our priority. We won’t win the Europa and coefficient points did us little good against Cluj and Athens.

We’ve 12 league games between now and the winter break. Win them all Celtic and bury this title race.

Don’t know were all this about Greg Taylor’s coming from, the bhoy’s training and can’t wait to get his chance in the team………….not posted for a while, but the crap getting spoke about some of the new bhoys is out of order…

    Bma.

  9. Play teams to get maximum points on Thursday and Sunday. Play RC against Lazzio as he’s suspended for Aberdeen game. Put pressure on the currant buns see how they handle it. Keep team ticking over and make sure to win League Cup starviñg Ibrox of any hope of silverware for 5 months. Put them under pressure with no Europe (I hope) or extra revenue after Christmas.

Nearly forgot about the 20 mil they’ll get for more or less that should fend of Mr Ashley for a wee while

  10. Cosy Corner Bhoy on

The abuse being given to Taylor is unbelievable considering he has not even kicked a ball for us yet! God knows what he will get when he actually plays.

BTW I don’t believe the rumour for a minute, and I was called an Orange Ba###rd by a bloke who was in my class at school when I played against him for Shell Amateurs against the Star of the Sea in the late 50s!!

  11. Good morning, friends, from a grey, breezy but not yet wet East Kilbride.

Genuine question – if anyone can remind me of the last time that Celtic played a home European group stage tie by fielding a ‘weakened’ team I’d be dlighted. And very surprised.

Anyway, wha actually is ‘weakened’? For example, if it’s Bauer rather than Elhamed, or Bitton instead of Ajer, is that actually a significantly different strenght team?

One game at a time bhoys and ghirls. Neil will pick the team that he feels will beat Lazio. After that he will pick the team that he feels will beat Aberdeen. I remain confident that Neil will get both selections right and we will remain top of both leagues!

The only definite is that RYan will play tomorrow but not on Sunday.

    One more sleep….

  12. Jobo

With you on the sentiments expressed in that post.

    Cosy Corner Bhoy + BMA ( :-))) )

Also with you on your comments.

    ( Well maybe not with CCB `cos he`s a DOB !!)

I feel that many/most Celtic supporters are still affected by the ABC feeling which is promoted in Scotland. For that reason, uncertainty re our team is , even in these massively successful times, is still the norm. I believe that is the root cause of the `play a weakened team in EL` view. Desperation to outdo `them` still exists even though Them don`t .

  13. No resting players, who will be chomping at the bit to play Lazio. We are also a level or two above Aberdeen so not quite getting the new belief they’ve turned a corner.

    Thursday:

Forster, Big Tam, Ajer, Julien, Boli, Briown, Callum, Christie, Jamesey, Eloi, Eddie (our current best 11)

    Sunday :

Same as Thursday but replace Big Tam with Frimpong, Christie replaced by Tom Rogic…

Sub performances over the 2 from Ntcham, Schved, Bayo and Hayes……

    Easy this lark

  14. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I could see the huns selling Morelos in January and bringing in the likes of Shankland or Cosgrove. Morelos not worth the £20 million bandied around in the MSM but worth more than some Celtic supporters would care to admit. I would be quite happy to see the back of him.

On prioritising games – I think its a moot point. The playing squad would be demotivated if Lenny didn’t play his strongest side against Lazio – regardless of supporters demands for 9/10 in a row.

  15. For what it’s worth.-

Lazio have issued a statement requesting that the 1500 Lazio fans going to the game on Thursday night behave appropriately.

The Italian Ambassador to the UK has done the same.

Some Italian media outlets have claimed that Italian plod believes that @ 200 -300 real thing Ultras are expected to arrive in Glasgow on Thursday afternoon

  16. Someone mentioned playing Frimpong further forward.Seems like an excellent idea to me.Great way of letting him learn both sides.Attacking, and dropping back to help out in defence. Also give him game time, even if it’s only coming on for Jamesy.A fantastic player in the making.

Last time big Nir played at Pittodrie,he was outstanding at the back.Joining Broony in midfield alongside Calmac would do me for Aberdeen game.Ryan a big miss.Watching the Man City game last night, although beaten 5-1,Atalanta looked a very decent team, only Sterling destroyed them.I expect Lazio to be very similar.Hard game.

  17. With the passing of the Head of refereeing in this country I think we need to watch this situation with this vacancy carefully, a return for Hugh Dallas or Dougie MacDonald is not beyond the realms of possibility for this governing body that we have, and it would be passed off without comment from the media in this country or worse as a good appointment.
