Use Wolfsburg to find desperately needed sharpness

1058

If you’ve been here for a while you’ll have noticed I don’t pay much attention to preseason friendlies but tomorrow’s game against Wolfsburg takes on a more serious tone after Tuesday’s reversal – Celtic desperately need to find sharpness.

Despite the well-placed confidence that we’ll cope comfortably at Celtic Park on Wednesday against Lincoln Red Imps, the serious challenges will come thick and fast thereafter.

Players need to find their edge and the manager needs to learn who goes where and works with whom. It’s just about possible for us to get things together, but whoever we pull out of the hat in today’s provisional third qualifying round draw will be delighted to catch a team in apparent flux.

All this brings us back to Wolfsburg’ a much needed test.

    Timbhoy29…,

But the manager has a budget (usually bigger than the teams who eliminate us), he has scouts at his disposal and has the complete authority on how the budget is spent

Can you provide any evidence to back up that claim, and I’m afraid I can’t accept the word of anyone who had secrecy clauses imposed in their contracts.

Now as to what proof I will accept, let’s start with a contract that has the managers signature as being the club representative signatory. Minutes of negotiations between managers and agents will do as well.

Conversations I have had with people within the club are to remain confidential as I’m always told in confidence.

You have no obligation to believe me and I am not here to convince you.

This is a Celtic blog where I come to discuss the club with like-minded folk. My understanding of the inner workings of the club are based off discussions I have had with various people who work there. Any opinion I have is based off this understanding which may or may not be a fair reflection of what actually goes on.

I do put more trust in this information because it comes from people I know personally as opposed to anonymous rumours online.

Nobody produces “proof” about the accusations to the contrary. I don’t expect them to either.

LUCKY CODY seems to be a pretty well-connected fella. High up in the food chain and not a bottom feeder.

He suggests-and he is not alone in this-that a certain policy carried out by a certain person in our club-who was allowed to operate unsupervised, against all rules of corporate governance-has cost our club in the region of £90m.

What are your thoughts on this, and on where we could perhaps have been, had that particular egomaniac not wrecked any chance of forward planning by his policy of retroaction in advance?

Some how I don’t see you as any more knowledgable than anyone else and everything you say is the result of wishful thinking and made up none sense. Too many players have been signed while the club has no manager in position yet you insist that PL has not signed anyone, are you serious ?

There have been many books written supporting faith and disputing faith.

There has also been many books written supporting science and disputing science.

The thing is these books to a word have all been written by people. Normally people with a belief or bias towards or against what they are writing about.

I include the Bible, the Koran, the Torah, the Origins of the Species etc. etc. etc.

Belief and faith are pretty much the same thing. What happened 2000 years ago or 2,000,000 years ago are both pretty much recorded in the words of man and/or women but in the main man.

Faith and belief is admiral and each and every one of us have the right to choose which path we take.

What do think is going to happen at Celtic? – more of the same please, or lets splash out on a few £5M upwards men and get them on 20K a week? – oh and BTW Dermot will bankrole the lot of it.

Now that we’ve actually badly bought ourselves into trouble there is no possibility of buying our way out of it again, speculate to accumulate strategies don’t work in football, especially when the stadium is already sold out.

Brendan Rodgers is just another young manager trying to make a name for himself, he exonorated his players ( the embarrassment remark ) in Gibraltar and took pelters. He even stuck up for Efe Ambrose ( more fool him )

I think I agree with most of what you say… We are a medium sized club and can not target the better players playing in the UK. I think reluctantly or not we have all downsized expectations to align with this reality.

However, we do ( as you point out) have 52000 season ticket holders, we have an enormous market out with the core who attend games. So if the marketing was right we do have a massive income generating potential. I remember PL being appointed and the thrust of his introduction centred on his ability to exploit foreign markets – particularly North America . Has that happened? I’m aware of Vegas convention , some supporters clubs, Celtic TV and a few friendlies but have we really exploited that market?

However, it’s a wee bit academic as the most sought after players don’t want to play in Scotland. So the real question is are we attracting the best we can? I’d suggest not. We are routinely turned over by clubs with less financial muscle who appear to have attracted better players ( and managers).

So most like me are consigned to expectations around domestic football. What does this mean?

Well winning the SPFL is a must. So far so good we are on course with that. A good showing in the cups.. Well I’d say that’s patchy at best.

So why is there still anxiety among the fans? Why do I ( and others) have little or no faith in our Board and specifically our CEO?

I think it’s because having consigned ourselves to minimal expectations the trajectory indicates that these will in due course need to be further downsized.

Meanwhile the CEO is paid £1m year.

The only people capable of telling Lawwell to sign a player are Desmondo , Park and his son…the manager comes way diwn that pecking order. …

    __________________

Park is simply the head scout.

I don’t doubt Lawwell gets info off of his son. Everybody passes on info between clubs. How many footballers have gotten discovered because somebody recommended them to a mate.

Desmondo only get’s involved when he feels like it.

    From what I know:

    – Lawwell has input on the playing budget but the decision is ultimately down to the board. Desmond has the biggest say.

    – Lawwell negotiates the transfers on behalf of Celtic

    – The coach gives instructions to Park about what to look for

    – The coach decides which players are signed as long as it fits the budget set by the board

Personally, I think the board and Lawwell’s biggest failures have been the appointments of managers.

I know that Lawwell interviewed both Mowbray and Roberto Martinez for the Celtic job. He usually makes a recommendation based off that to the board who have the final say (DD is effectively a kingmaker)

I don’t know if Lawwell recommended Mowbray (though it seems likely) but if he did, it’s a major failure as he really set the club back a few years when Rangers were on the ropes.

I know that Ronny was originally hired to be NL’s assistant. NL decided to leave unexpectedly and the board elevated Ronny to the managers position. It certainly wasn’t the original plan and the squad has stagnated in between.

I’m not convinced about Rodgers either. I’d have preferred if the board appointed NL. I don’t begrudge Neil leaving when he did. We give out 1 year rolling deals so shouldn’t cry foul if a coach looks for a better contract elsewhere.

Some people on here hold entrenched views on Peter Lawwell, views which I believe common sense demolishes – however all the logic in the world could not change their minds.

In the last two attemps at CL qualification under Ronny, we were down to the final ninety-minutes in each case. In both ties we were in an eminently winnable position – we blew it on the park, not in the boardroom, against opposition with resources far inferior than ours.

That’s the hard and irrefutable evidence, now if some chose to hold another view, one that backs up their agenda…..well that’s their choice.

Thanks for your reply it is obvious our views differ as a believer which has become stronger over the years I have no doubt that there is a GOD and we choose what we wish to do in our eternal life.I would of course like others to find out for themselves that they have choices and that there is a God however the very fact that we have a choice as individuals means some will and some wont.H,H.

Shame on you! Evidence cannot be biased. The human witness naturally is, the human interpretation of it likewise, but evidence has its own mass (pun alert), its own significance, whether convincing or weak, questionable or empirical.

  25. If we get through, and I believe we will, then Astana, the likely winners will be a tough draw and a much better team than Shakhter that we scraped through against.

Last year Astana were in 3rd place after the regular season. They overtook the two teams above them when they split off into a top 6 with 10 more games to play. Incidentally Shakhter finished just above the relegation spots in the bottom 6 so there is a big gap between them.

This year, Astana are 10 points clear in the regular season, Shakhter remain in 3rd bottom spot of 12 again. Goal difference of 32:11 suggests they have a strong defence and they have won 16 of 20 games played, losing only twice both by 1:0 away from home.

If we draw Astana, we have no evidence to install ourselves as favourites for the tie.

    BMCUWP,

Actually, I don’t think it’s unfair at all, can you imagine someone’s response if they were told the managers have no choice in who is signed ?

Do you think if that’s the case anyone is going to admit it, I’d be less inclined to believe anyone who gets their information from “the horses mouth” than the made up list on the streets, people who want to share any such information have an agenda and it’s no usually bound by honesty.

I have spoken and speak regularly with senior management in various industries and cagey is the best I could describe the information they are willing to share, for them to freely share information there is usually an alternative agenda to what they are openly pronouncing. I spoke with Bankier and his words were wrapped up in double meanings so for someone to come on claiming he has the inside track and refuses to address facts like who signed Craig Gordon than as far as I’m concerned he is being used or talking shite, it’s that simple.

The news from Nice has been awful and puts absolutely everything in perspective. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected and everyone living in France who will continue living in fear and under a “state of emergency” for another while. But the French and strong people and will persevere.

On the Celtic front, zero hours contracts extremely disappointing but I’m really not that surprised.

Lack of signings? Are we repeating the now annual folly of waiting to see which Euro completion we end up in before opening an envelope marked ‘CL Signing Targets’ or ‘EL Signing Targets’? Looks like a yes. The 5 Year Plan must run for 10 years you know!

  32. JFH

I tend to believe there is a God. The qualification of the word God is what I most often question though.

Is he the God of the Old Testemant who had rapturous fury and sent plague and flood to punish his sinners or the God of the New Testement who was and is a wee bitty nicer but gave up his own son, to pain and death to save the souls of us his sinners. Is he the same God of Islam who depending on interpretation is a God of love to all all or a God of spite and vengeance. Is God Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Mormon etc. etc. etc. Is it God who created the big bang? Did he put on this earth many species before us like T-rex etc. the bones of which are displayed in museums around the world. Did he create the evil man that we saw last night in his image or that of the uber Christian Tony Blair who sent devastation to 100’s of thousand across the world? Does he create politicians in his image who bring us poverety and food banks?

As i said, I do and try to believe, probably just cutting my loses just in case but to accept him God just because it is written down and faithful is not of my want or will.
