Use Wolfsburg to find desperately needed sharpness

1058

If you’ve been here for a while you’ll have noticed I don’t pay much attention to preseason friendlies but tomorrow’s game against Wolfsburg takes on a more serious tone after Tuesday’s reversal – Celtic desperately need to find sharpness.

Despite the well-placed confidence that we’ll cope comfortably at Celtic Park on Wednesday against Lincoln Red Imps, the serious challenges will come thick and fast thereafter.

Players need to find their edge and the manager needs to learn who goes where and works with whom. It’s just about possible for us to get things together, but whoever we pull out of the hat in today’s provisional third qualifying round draw will be delighted to catch a team in apparent flux.

All this brings us back to Wolfsburg’ a much needed test.

“In the last two attemps at CL qualification under Ronny, we were down to the final ninety-minutes in each case. In both ties we were in an eminently winnable position – we blew it on the park, not in the boardroom, against opposition with resources far inferior than ours.

That’s the hard and irrefutable evidence, now if some chose to hold another view, one that backs up their agenda…..well that’s their choice.”

Allow me, if not a refutation, at least a clarification on that narrative.

We were not down to the last 90 minutes 2 years ago- we had already been knocked out on the football field only to gain reprieve from a small and innocent admin error by Legia. We were knocked out twice on the pitch that year.

And, moving closer to refutation, you have done nothing to rebut the hypothesis that Boardroom decisions on spend impacts upon quality on the pitch.

    Timbhoy29…,

So your saying you have no more reliable information than anyone else and we should just accept your word, and you can provide no evidence to support your claims and make silly arguments justify not providing evidence.

Some how I don’t see you as any more knowledgable than anyone else and everything you say is the result of wishful thinking and made up none sense. Too many players have been signed while the club has no manager in position yet you insist that PL has not signed anyone, are you serious ?

    Sober up.

    ____________________

You see, this is what I don’t get about you. There is absolutely no need to be confrontational about this.

“So your saying you have no more reliable information than anyone else”

I cannot comment fully on the reliability of other peoples information. Once again, I don’t deny that other people have information that could be perfectly reliable.

I believe that the information I get is reliable. Though there is certainly going to be some bias attached to that information.

“we should just accept your word”

Actually, if you read my post fully, I suggested that you should make up your own mind about what to believe. I quite like getting information from inside the club as I care about it. I wouldn’t betray the confidence of those who tell me what’s going on to satisfy people on a blog.

I don’t expect you to believe me and I won’t be making any attempts to do so. The PLC are the ones who should be passing information to fans and shareholders.

“and you can provide no evidence to support your claims”

“Now as to what proof I will accept, let’s start with a contract that has the managers signature as being the club representative signatory. Minutes of negotiations between managers and agents will do as well.”

I greatly appreciate the work you do regarding resolution 12. I am surprised that somebody who has been involved in a campaign that has been so careful about providing information in the private domain would expect me to produce a copy of a signed contract on the blog

“make silly arguments justify not providing evidence”

I don’t need to justify anything.

I’m a fan discussing football on a blog. I don’t expect or demand anybody to agree with me or believe me. I don’t see anybody else producing legal documentation when it comes to the accusations that Peter Lawwell signs players without the managers permission

How do you define blew it?

    How could we blow it?

Celtic were presented with evidence that Res 12 should be carried after they said it wasn’t necessary.

That is why they adjourned because the evidence was persuasive. That of itself was a victory for small shareholders. A first in AGM history.

Then we got the SFA to reply and make a public statement whereby the door to UEFA was opened. That was a victory in the accountability stakes (the underlying motive of Res12)

Then we got UEFA to respond opening the door that Res12 was trying to get open. That was a victory.

The new club stuff was an unsought bonus but as I’ve posted to you a number of times is not the aim of Res12.

The facts are that after some investigation after the AGM it was pretty conclusive that the correct process had not been followed and in August 2014 Celtic should have passed Res12. They didn’t and left it to shareholders.

If anyone blew Res12 sunshine it was Celtic and if I were you I’d stop airing your ill informed opinion as it does those you think you are supporting no favours.

    Timaloy29,

Which Celtic manager signed Craig Gordon?

    ______________

Neil Lennon agreed to bring him in to have a look at him. He trained and was considering signing him.

He left on the 22nd of May and Ronny Deila agreed to be the manager on the 6th of June.

Craig Gordon signed a full contract with Celtic on the 3rd of July and made his debut on the 19th of July.

So to recap: Neil Lennon agreed to have a look at Gordon over pre-season and they signed a nominal short-term deal.

Neil decided to leave and Ronny Deila became manager.

Ronny Deila was impressed with Gordon and agreed to sign him on a full contract.

  14. CULTSBHOY@2:46

In turn, I agree with most of what you have said – are we getting enough “bang for our buck”?

Certainly on the park, we are not. With a wage bill between £30/£40 million, there is no doubt we are falling short.

Are we getting value for money in the transfer market – again there must be question marks.

Any CEO who can provide a Scottish club with a wage bill of £30/£40 million, negotiate the best commercial deals in the country, finance a first-class training facilty, improve and update the stadium…and do all this with TV revenue of £2.8 million and without plunging the club into unmanageable and crippling debt, is due to be well rewarded.

There is, in my opinion, absolutely no correlation between Peter Lawwells salary and the challenges we face going forward in the crazy financial world that now dominates football.

    MWD,

It confuses me that all the bad things that happen can be turned into God’s fault for letting them happen, I think people who use that argument are only interested in turning people away from their faith. When faced with similar arguments I like to remind people that if you believe in God you must also believe in the devil and that is where you should look and blame for the bad things that happen, God has given us the freedom of choice, if people choose to carry out the work of the devil how can God be blamed for that.

I sometimes get the answer that God created the devil, a simple reply is, what choice would there be if he did not ?

Since Rangers died in 2012 we have won the league by:-

    2012/13- 16 points

    2013/14- 29 points

    2014/15- 17 points

This data cannot be tortured to make it out that we fluked any league.

‘It seems’ probably the wrong phraseology.. ‘It feels’ may more accurately captures what I’m driving at.

Yes we have won comfortably – hence my assertion it is a one horse race.

However as you slide to knicker wetting I sense you share some of my frustrations.. We are making hard work out of it.

The defeat to Newco, the ridiculous defeat to imps… Some frankly tragic performances. A team of poor players.. These too are facts and not the imaginations of entitlement..

My PERSONAL view is that new ideas are required to inject new hope. I do not believe we are reaching for our potential. My firmly held belief is that the CEO position has much to do with our dimishing position and distance between fans and Board ambitions.

As for my player recommendations from Aberdeen – I stand by my Assessment of Rooney, McGinn and Hayes… Better by a distance than Several who played for Celtic last season. Despite the history, I’d throw Logan in to that mix.
